I want to remind you to remove the battery connection so there NO chance of moving the position of the engine rotating components and under no circumstance should you allow the removed injection pump to rotate. You will be in for some major work if that happens. There is little to no information that I can find on the 332 T Perkins and injection timing is extremely critical !!

Yes Reg, it was tough. I've pulled injectors with barely more than a good grip before and others were tougher, but with much less of a problem... its just that these were allowed to fill the indention in the head with water for 20 years before I got it, LOL All's well that ends well though.

Furniture and antiques of course but since I’m about 20 miles from New Holland, I recon shops like this are already established. I’ve seen quite a few NH utility tractors here and there, about as many as I see Kubota, bright blue and all. Sure looks like the shop that rebuilt your parts did a fine job! I have always sought out those small shops that know what they’re doing, conceived in back seats and born on an engine block type dudes. Their play pens had hoods over them. Yes, this is a small shop, a guy and his wife mainly with a couple mechanics that keep working. I can't complain. He quoted me 55 each to rebuild them, but rolled them all into the quoted price for rebuilding the pump to specs. $592.00 and that's it. The last one I had rebuilt in the big city and it was $625.00 ten years ago !! But it was a much bigger shop with higher overhead. I enjoyed my morning black and it went down hot and smooth ol buddy !! Take care and give my best to Miss Alice.

She taught school a number of years and was a journalist for one of Lancaster papers. She passed back in 09 at 92 years. My brother lived in New Holland 8-10 years before he passed back in 2017. There’s a great hardware store there that’s been there generations, Zimmermans if I recall. It’s like an old timey general store that caters to tourists now. There’s lot of commercialism around the Amish in that northern part of Lancaster County. Here in the southern we have no tourism, traffic, shops that sell Chinese Amish stuff and so on, including tons of summer traffic up there. 60 miles west of Phila, 70-80 miles north of Baltimore and 3 hours south of NYC. Growing up in Strasbourg, 12 miles north of where I am now here inna holler and having the oldest shoreline steam RR in the country and the National RR Museum, there was plenty tourists through our small town. The Amish make plenty off tourists for sure but those that don’t have to put up with cars and tour buses going by their farms. The Amish don’t believe in having their photos taken, it creates a graven image they feel. That doesn’t stop many tourists though. I’ve seen big black Caddies and Lincoln’s from the city parked by their yard fences taking pictures with parent shielding their kids from them. If you ever saw the movie Witness with Harrison Ford, it was filmed on a farm about 6-7 miles north of us. In fact I had customers I’d restored many fine antiques for who leased their very private home to The movie dudes where Harrison and his family stayed several months during filming. At that time it was filmed a few miles south of my old farm house. As you can imagine, Hollywood stretched a few Amish facts for the movie but didn’t do too bad. Also The Boys From Brazil with Gregory Peck was filmed on a farm very close as well. That farm was remodeled and purchased by Amish many years ago. In fact that movie my mentors stone house was seen as Gregory was pulling out on the main road in a Falcon, if I remember. Sure makes locals buzz for a long time when such things happen, some funny fake gossip too. The Amish were not amused at all with this movie. So here I went down the story book lane again! I in my 20s and my best friend was in his 80s, my mentor. Always seemed I’ve had old folks in my life since I was a kid. Like old Mr. Schultz who lived next door. I hung out with him a lot. He raised chickens and a few sheep, gave me an old BB gun and Indian bow and told me he saw a mermaid at a traveling circus show. He died when I was 12. When I look back on my life I’ve had some wonderful times that I appreciate so much and I know you have as well. Making Them marks was just brilliant.....we had some pump timing issues but with a J D pump and I think the timing is still off a bit just by the engine runs but than that tractor is just used in Spring planting season.....good experience to have and to keep in mind.....CHEERS
After lining up the cam and crank marks, I took a 1'' thin disc and made matching marks on the pump drive gear and the cam drive gear, then made a "T" mark on the injection pump shaft, the leg of the T being down. Just a horizontal mark could still be 180 out on install if it got moved. There's no woodruff key in the pump drive gear, its just a press-fit taper. So now all is marked for good !! If your Deere is running that good, it can only be off one tooth at the max I'd think.
Your common sense know-how saved you a lot of potential grief, Wendell! That skid steer should run like new once you have it back together. Thanks for sharing!
Martin, I have taken apart many engines of many types over the years and never have I see one with all the components that require 'timing' NOT have timing marks. Not fully understanding the correct way to 'pin' the pump, is why we made the marks ourselves on the components during removal. We sure HOPE it'll run like new !! LOL
That’s a great engine and if I remember correctly a decent fuel system as well. That engine was run in the Ford 4630 tractors for years that is basically bulletproof! A good low rpm engine with a lot of torque.
It's a real horse...the turbo turns it into the beast it is !! The contaminated fuel was all my own fault and I am paying the price for it now Bruce. LOL

We are hoping it all goes back together good too Tom !! It was no easy feat getting to the bolt that holds the drive gear to the pump shaft. It's under the timing cover and that's the entire front of the engine with no clearance. It all had to come off to get the cover off to get the drive gear off !!
Thank you I have had a Pump on my 545D and cannot find any literature on it. I did the same on the engine but didn't know what to do on the pump. I had the pump kit and it has been sitting for some time . Will be getting it done now this weekend. Thanks

Wendell, It seems like a good sheet metal cover for the back of the skid steer, raising it up to allow proper air flow, would be a good idea. Really enjoyed the vid. I'm tearing into a broken governor bracket on my farmall 340, and its a problem every step of the way. I'm to the point of just making my own. Your advice on the timing is perfect! I always set to TDC anything that I working on, just to make it easier to start after fixing. To me, that would be a great vid, also. Thanks and great job with the info. I am in the process of making a video of the re installation, Michael. I am going to tie it in with the dis assembly video already in the que. I thought it'd be nice to highlight just the injection pump and injectors by themselves as they were going to the repair shop. I've thought of making a removable sheet metal cover and may do that eventually. But since I've owned it I have either kept it under roof or securely tarped for this reason. Two of those injectors were STUCK !! And stuck bad too.
Well my dad said that I wasn't a SLOW mechanic, and I wasn't a FAST mechanic....he'd say I was a HALF-fast mechanic !! (But ya gotta say it really quick). LOL. This one had me thinking before I got done with it. The big take away is to pin the pump in position, remove the battery before you remove the pump. Then DO NOT rotate the crankshaft even one degree !! The injection timing is that important. Off just one or two degrees will result it a LOT of power loss. This Perkins 332T I think is one of the worst to get back into time. Thanks Doug for watching. I ended up using a degree wheel and dial indicator to get this one back where it needed. It's not fun. Well Richard, out of all the engines I've been into, this is the first one that had no timing marks on the most important part needing to be timed !! By golly, it's got marks NOW for sure !! Dismantling engines and paying attention to the details of the assembly is important if you don't do it daily for a living. I'd suggest that now with the proliferation of smart phones, a fellow should document with many many pictures to aid in remembering. Especially if its going to be months before it goes back together.
Good explaination ,dont forget to take out the old copper washers from the head even check that somebody didnt leave an old one there so 2 washers on injector anything can happen .I think it is good you hadn't a fitting for the slide hammer to top of injector it is not strong enough there for slidehammer forces you needed with that rust ,some types of injector get pulled with slidehammer but not that type I believe
Good point, I made sure all three injectors had the copper washers on them, but I did not check the holes. I will do that before reassembly though. Thanks for putting the bug in my ear to double check !! You are probably right about the slide hammer on those fittings, they really WERE kinda small. I priced new injectors at Messicks and iirc, they were $292 each.

Wow.. what are the chances this video pops up as I’m working on my ls180. Just stumbled across this. Iv got a bad white fuel smelling exhaust by and a little bit of a rough run. Just did filters and had injectors cleaned/ tested. Thinking I might have to pull the pump off unfortunately
Its not a pleasant experience on the LX865. I've not got the chance to reinstall it yet, but I am doing a video on the removal/reinstallation too. Take a look and see if you can see the pin and figure 8 washer there on the outside of your pump. I'd kinda like to know for sure too. It may be a standard item on all Lucas pumps, I don't know.
I'm afraid you may have to refer to the manual on that particular engine for the exact procedure. Some of them can be extremely tricky for sure. Good luck.
If they manufactures put a ((key way)) like they used to do, You Would NOT have the Headaches of having to lock the pump in timing. It dose not take much to be out on timing to cause big problems... It's okay if they have a decent engine lock also, but not always the case. The engineers that designed this are just the greatest😡 they come up with so many great ideas these days. I could go on and on..,,.
Oh I agree 100% about the engineers that design this stuff. Even if they installed slots in the pump like others, you can dial it in by rotating the pump housing...but not on this one !! Dang, If I'd a known that beforehand..... I've been into a few diesels, but mostly gasoline engines from lawnmowers to old farm tractors, to cars, trucks (6's and 8's) and bikes up to 6 cylinder. Now a days they are all expensive !! I didn't know HOW to pin this Lucas and was surprised at how easy it is. Of course that kinda does make a bit of sense once I talked to the rebuilder.

Another gent thinks the same about the 4000 series Jan. But it is different than the 201 cu in 3 cylinder in my 1975 4500 Ford backhoe.

Wow.. what are the chances this video pops up as I’m working on my ls180. Just stumbled across this. Iv got a bad white fuel smelling exhaust by and a little bit of a rough run. Just did filters and had injectors cleaned/ tested. Thinking I might have to pull the pump off unfortunately
Its not a pleasant experience on the LX865. I've not got the chance to reinstall it yet, but I am doing a video on the removal/reinstallation too. Take a look and see if you can see the pin and figure 8 washer there on the outside of your pump. I'd kinda like to know for sure too. It may be a standard item on all Lucas pumps, I don't know.

I'm afraid you may have to refer to the manual on that particular engine for the exact procedure. Some of them can be extremely tricky for sure. Good luck.

I really don't know. I had these serviced along with the injector pump...so I didn't have to buy new ones.
If they manufactures put a ((key way)) like they used to do, You Would NOT have the Headaches of having to lock the pump in timing. It dose not take much to be out on timing to cause big problems... It's okay if they have a decent engine lock also, but not always the case. The engineers that designed this are just the greatest😡 they come up with so many great ideas these days. I could go on and on..,,.
Oh I agree 100% about the engineers that design this stuff. Even if they installed slots in the pump like others, you can dial it in by rotating the pump housing...but not on this one !! I’ve had my Fair share of working on diesel engines
Dang, If I'd a known that beforehand..... I've been into a few diesels, but mostly gasoline engines from lawnmowers to old farm tractors, to cars, trucks (6's and 8's) and bikes up to 6 cylinder. Now a days they are all expensive !! I didn't know HOW to pin this Lucas and was surprised at how easy it is. Of course that kinda does make a bit of sense once I talked to the rebuilder.
