I remember reading that when he first came out, all the DJs at the radio stations thought he was black. So they are the ones who started comparing him according to his color. He does sound very bluesy when he wants to, he has an awesome voice, a very long standing career and I don't think he needs to prove anything to anyone. How many people have lasted as long as he has?? People still love him know that he's in his 70s. To say he can't sing soul and he was "embarrassing himself" is to say that you are just not liking Tom Jones and you didn't even listen to the song. So why even watch one of his videos if you have something against the man???
When Tom covers another artist's song, I see it as him giving respect and admiration to that artist. BTW,I love this performance of Al Green's classic song!
Any song I like I love when Tom sings it❤I'm only now discovering that he was singing the soul sounds of the '70s that I was listening to. If I'd known I would have gone to Tom's 10 out of 10 times!
...soul and rhythm in your bones...you've got that raw "oomph" and "grit" to just take any song you sing to another level...never another tom jones ❤❤❤
Imho, Tom has always been one of the greatest voices, range, power, projecting like opera singer, always sang in tune and has a soulful voice and pretty much gave influence to others like Elvis + youngers.. And hmm was it Wilson who said "soul singers try to sing like you" with ruth brown he was actually pretty amazed his soulful sound, who said to Ruth that he is one of us, he is lyin. Otis gave compliments too. Anyway its not wrong to change genre, he re invented himself. It means up to date!
Nice version of Al Green’s classic song. Tom has a great voice for soulful songs. I remember reading that many DJ’s thought he was black when they first heard him.
TJ is highly respected by his fellow musicians for his blues and soul versions. He doesn't have anything to prove to idle posters on the backwaters of the 'net. LOL
Most folks cover Al Green songs and can't pull it off. Tom Jones is one of the few who CAN do right by Rev. Al. Sure, the original will always be the best, but Jones' version is strong enough to hold its own.
Love Tom Jones' rendition ..made it his own! Great powerful voice, an aural melodic treat as usual. Enjoy very soulful Al Greene's original also. On his show, TJ has dueted and gone toe to toe with the best, the very edgy! It is even joked that he must have the black dna. Check out his See Saw - live version. Check out also Jones' easy version of Phyllis Nelson's "Move Closer", an example of better than the original. He is one very versatile singer who covers many genres VERY successfully, putting his special stamp on his versions: combination of his powerful vocals, passion and unique charisma... often better than the original versions with his One of a kind massive talent! ...In his 7O's he still cajoles and sings along with the wonderful Jennifer Hudson on U.K. "The Voice", having a great time as he did with the likes of Wilson Pickett and Tina Turner decades ago ......
If Tom Jones version of "I'm so tired of being alone" isn't with high skill quality (not this video, original tape),I think that will be got negative critics then, in 1971 .. - second, I think that Tom and Al have some duets ??
hey hey now. I LOVE tom, but I LOVE al green. Two different styles. But Al's version is the best. And I'm sure Al can't sing She's A lady with those hip thrusts tom does sooo well ;)
@TheRollerFly oh MY!!!! I TOTALLY agree!! wtf is this shhhhhhhhhhit!?? I am CTFU at his performance, the number of thumbs up and the comments that say he sounds good and soulful LMAO!!!!! be blessed
well, this may be likeable, but Al Green was the original creator, and his version is far more than likeable, its insanely awesome. Or perhaps its just Al's voice that makes the difference, this is too Elvisy for me or Operatic.
Exactly. 'brightsmil8989' must be on some kind of medication to make such a dopey comment - and has certainly never seen Al Green performing "Live" in his heyday.
Watch the contemporaneous Al Green version of this song, a 6:00 clip posted by slimfab; it puts TJ to shame. I guess there's a reason people refer to "soul" music and "white soul" music.
True. "Having no discernible music(al) talent" is about the ONLY thing I have in common with Mr. Jones! haha! I DO however, have quite good musical TASTE I think, and consequently have no difficulty spotting the difference between this second-rate crap and Al Green's brilliant original.
I LOVE Tom Jones, but in re-doing a soul classic by a master and an originator, he is totally out of his depth. I can see, however, how certain listeners may think otherwise.
@fonzi883c Yes, that's the response I'd expect from the terminally brain dead. Not able to refute anything I say, they have to rely on personal attacks of the lowest variety. Well he can aspire all he likes, but Tom Jones is NOT and never will be a "Soul singer" - and it's nothing to do with his colour. This performance is downright embarrassing.

kellyrego , i agree with you even though i like the Al Green version better but i do love Tom Jones great voice !
When Tom covers another artist's song, I see it as him giving respect and admiration to that artist. BTW,I love this performance of Al Green's classic song!

Sir Tom Jones! Your Voice Is Electrofrying!
I Love This Song!
I Love You Sir Tom! ❤
TJ is highly respected by his fellow musicians for his blues and soul versions. He doesn't have anything to prove to idle posters on the backwaters of the 'net. LOL

Tremendo!!!!!!!!😀
@drwhatson
why are you here watching Tom Jones if you dislike him so much?
Whatever, all thse artists have their own special voices that we love.
Most folks cover Al Green songs and can't pull it off. Tom Jones is one of the few who CAN do right by Rev. Al. Sure, the original will always be the best, but Jones' version is strong enough to hold its own.
No siempre la versión original es la mejor. Y para muestra un boton.
I agree.Love both Al Green and Tom Jone’s voices.

I just happened to watch Al Green's rendition elsewhere. Both are likable.
Талантище.
Love Tom Jones' rendition ..made it his own! Great powerful voice, an aural melodic treat as usual.

- second, I think that Tom and Al have some duets ??
Otis Redding called Tom “the best damn soul singer on the planet.” High praise indeed. Elvis called him “The Voice.”
only Al Greens version has this special kind of feeling, full of magic ...
AMEN! Al Green is great - but the depth of TJ's voice suits this song. I prefer TJ's version.
Mil veces!, esa voz no la tiene nadie.
HANNEKE HIJ IS ZO ONGELOFELIJK GOED HE.👍👍👍
1972
for first time, Tom perform on this concert with battery in his left pants, but therefore he perform and dance perfectly
Wow❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂
He was SEXY!!!!
hey hey now. I LOVE tom, but I LOVE al green. Two different styles. But Al's version is the best. And I'm sure Al can't sing She's A lady with those hip thrusts tom does sooo well ;)

AL Green is wonderful no doubt, but a song like this deserves a much better voice like T J's
Should have left this one alone, Tom.
well, this may be likeable, but Al Green was the original creator, and his version is far more than likeable, its insanely awesome. Or perhaps its just Al's voice that makes the difference, this is too Elvisy for me or Operatic.

@dionco92 It made Al Green laugh too.

Sorry he has an amazing voice but this is not a song for him this is Al Greens song
total war
True. "Having no discernible music(al) talent" is about the ONLY thing I have in common with Mr. Jones! haha!
I DO however, have quite good musical TASTE I think, and consequently have no difficulty spotting the difference between this second-rate crap and Al Green's brilliant original.
Well do not watch It
Get over it...
I LOVE Tom Jones, but in re-doing a soul classic by a master and an originator, he is totally out of his depth. I can see, however, how certain listeners may think otherwise.
Totally disagree
Totally out of his depth??? And you're totally wrong...tom jones has soul in his DNA
@fonzi883c ditto. Go back to your lousy pop records and leave the real thing to the experts...
eugh..disagree completely..The song needs alot more soul than "Tj" can offer.
@fonzi883c Yes, that's the response I'd expect from the terminally brain dead. Not able to refute anything I say, they have to rely on personal attacks of the lowest variety.
