Very cool machines! These old shovel excavators are not very common anymore in real life - except in large mines and quarries, and at old heavy equipment shows.
Fun Fact: There's actually a 4th one - a Mighty Tonka Crawler Shovel. It has the same shovel cab as the Mighty Shovel shown here, but is mounted on tracks. It was sold exclusively at Sears, and it is VERY rare and hard to find. I actually saw one on eBay not too long ago, believe it or not! I don't think it is still there, though.
Looking forward to the backhoe video!!!

Yes that’s about it. Mining operations are the only ones using front shovels. Most using regular excavators

Another Fun Fact: Nowadays, when most people think of the word "backhoe", they usually think of a backhoe loader - which is a tractor-like machine with a loader attachment in front and an excavator attachment in back. However, the term "backhoe" originally meant an excavator that scoops with a backward motion, while a shovel was an excavator that scoops with a forward motion. Hence, why the old Tonka Mighty and Regular Backhoes were so-called.

@@davydigger708 I own a construction company and I honestly never knew the origin of the term backhoe. I just assumed it was because it was a hoe mounted on the rear. Learn something new everyday I guess!

It's fun to research things - I had a Tonka Mighty Backhoe (a newer one), and I used to think "wait, isn't that an excavator?" it always confused me as to why they called it a backhoe. Now I understand! It's amazing what you can find out when you do research!
Believe it or not - I actually ran an excavator when I was 4 - not all by myself, though!

They actually moved production from Mound, Minnesota to El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico in 1983 - the Tiny Tonkas were made in Mexico, and the Regular and Mighty were made in El Paso. Not quite sure which one the Mini Tonkas were made at - I will have to do a little more research. In 1997, the production of the Regular and Mighty series moved to Tijuana, Mexico, but problems arose at the factory, thus production was moved to China in 1998, where it remains to this day.
Note: Hasbro purchased Tonka in 1991, but they allowed USA production for a few years longer. Also, this is only the steel trucks - the all plastic trucks and the small diecast ones have always been made in either China, Thailand, or Vietnam. Also, there were some Regular and Mighty trucks from the 60s-80s that were made in Canada for the Canadian and European markets, and some in the 80's that were made in Korea for the European and Asian markets. The Canadian and Korean trucks are very hard to find in the United States as they were not originally sold here.
