This is just devastating. I cant help but feel, we as human beings, are failing these precious animals time and time again. We all know what an animal has to do to survive, he was hungry, in less than optimim condition and doing what he had to do. He didnt know any better, we did.... and still things escalated. I am so very sorry that this situation could not have been managed in a different way. . RIP beautiful Tavangumi. ❤💯
It's sad. I know they don't interfere with the animals unless it was human involved, but I still feel they could have done a capture and release for medical purposes. This makes the third one that I'm aware of.
Human Poachers caused his injury and ultimately caused his death. Tragedy all round. Tavangumi, so very sorry my boy, you deserved so much better. X🐾💙 Marianne NZ
It is such sad news but shared so compassionately and honestly. Poor Tavangumi being snared like that, which ultimately cost his life. Very sad about the dog, too. I hope the ranger is OK physically and mentally after such a trauma and everyone else who is affected. My best wishes to everyone at Sabie Sands ❤ RIP Tavangumi and the dog who died from its injuries.
I can't help but keep thinking that... To Tavangumi, suddenly humans became a threat starting with the snare (and pain) to the human hunting (to dart him) then waking up in what must have been like an alien abduction and left disfigured, that humans had now become the targeted enemy. So sad indeed.
I think the reserves are to blame too. It was their duty to care for him. They should have fed him enough until he's healed. Then his abnormal behaviour would not have happened. They failed him.😢😠
Humans caused his condition , humans should have cared for ( fed) him until fully recuperated . You accustom yourselves with these leopards from a very early age and take pride when they do not avoid humans (except for the wise Molwati ) and then this trait of not totally fearing humans ends up costing them their lives like Hosana and Tavangumi. Are you sure that you're doing this the right way ? I fear for Maribye now too
Oh my gosh Steve this is really tragic news! Sorry for the loss of the dog. 💔 Good to see you back again. I wasn't able to watch WE due to the removal from our screens, so he's one I've not seen! Bless Buffelshoek for taking him to be buried there! RIP magnificent Tavangumi & hope you've sired many little cubbies that will continue to flourish! 💔💔💔
R.I.P. Tavangumi. So sad. I guess he was hungry and being wounded couldn't hunt so went for an easy target. Sad about the dog as well. Just sad all the way around. 😢😢
Deeply saddened. I feel that perhaps he should have been put down at the trap. Severely injured he should not have been released. Feeding him was wonderful but to my mind that was the problem he was hungry and needed further help which he did nit receive. Am not blaming anyone, it's just my thoughts . RIP Tavanguni we lived you. Appreciate all concerned in trying to help. We live all at Wild Earth.
Tavangumi (aka Thaba Ngumi) will be sorely missed by many who had the honour of 'knowing' him! The cause is such a sad one. (sorry, extensive post ahead) While I understand the 'should have, could have, why didn't they' comments as they come from a place of love, I would like to add my 2 cents. It is not meant as criticism or anything like it, but it's what I gained from experts and practical experience as 'wildlife conservation and rehabilitation volunteer' over the years: These are wild animals and they do not benefit from the same approaches as domesticated animals or pets. Experts have learned from years/decades of successes and failures. These experiences have formed what are considered the best guidelines. They are generally proven to be most successful (but do not always work for each individual), such as... - keeping a wild animal 'in care' to recover too often has the opposite effect as the animal feels caged and threathed, which is detrimental to the healing process. He/she may stop eating, be excessively stressed and even fight to escape potentially injuring itself even more. The guideline is to release as soon as possible even when it is uncertain they will make it - recurring feeding an injured animal intending to support it, teaches the animal to associate humans with food (entirely different from being habituated to humans in vehicles) . It can also attract (other) predators. Both increases the risk of further conflicts. The guideline is that supplying food should be kept to the absolute minimum. - darting (and relocating?) to remove the animal from the threatening situation is not a likely solution in a situation like what happened with Tavangumi and the employee/dog/guests. Leopards are territorial so relocating an injured animal into another's (unknown) territory is problematic at best. But even more importantly, this behaviour was so extremely unlike Tavangumi that it is likely that he was in far worse condition than he seemed to be, even if he had woken up from sedation, he would have likely resorted to the same desperate threatening behaviour, maybe even worse. I personally believe all involved tried what they could and made the best decisions they could under the extremely sad circumstances, even if the outcome is heartbreaking... Rest in Peace, Thaba Ngumi... You stole the heart of many!
After the death of his father Nyeleti and brother Shangwa under the similar mysterious circumstances with so many "why", this one is no surprise to me at all...
Is the fact thet whomever snared Tavangumi is still out there amd is there an on going investigation?? I hipw so. Because they need to be stopped. Shame that Tavangumi's beauty is his death sentence.
We make easy prey for a badly injured predators. It’s sad when it happens but euthanizing the animal is necessary and often the animal is suffering so much it’s better for him or her.
I think he associated the smell of the snare with staff, hence the attack. They say tigers are vengeful, never leopards sofar. This is so so unfortunate. I think Sabie had no choice. RIP Tava

Heartbroken. What a beautiful and unique leopard he was and we destroyed him. Humans SUCK.
Well, poachers suck, at any rate.
Another tragic and sad loss of one of our favorite leopards. RIP Tavangumi 😥

This is so sad but once this happens, the leopard will not stop. The leopard was hurt and the poachers need to be caught.

I’m pretty sure the guides and rangers who have been working there for several years know what they’re doing.
Really heartbreaking very very sadly how 😢💔
