  • i bought this 2oo4 toyota tundra a little under 2 years ago with a rusted frame. the recall was over for this truck and the toyota dealer only sprayed it down with some black covering that in my opinion just made it worse. so I purchased the truck cheap and patched the frame where the rusted holes were, then scraped off the flaking black stuff and sprayed it down with oil. fast forward today and the truck comes in to see how it is holding up and do some repairs.
lets fix an exhaust leak, a broken sway bar link and respray it with oil.

I just wanted to thank you. I have an old homelite weed eater. Has to be 20 years old and hadn’t ran for adleast 8years. I order a carb kit from yes china. I had never done anything like this before. Thanks to watching you working on stuff i figured what the hell. It worked and purrs like a kitten. Although its still freezing up here it feels great to have done this. Thank you.

When I was a kid I lived near an old man who had probably 50 old cars lined up in rows in a field. These were like 40's,50's and 60's body styles. He used to go out every year and spray them down with plain old motor oil. He sprayed the bodies, the frames and pretty much the entire exterior and the engine bays. They had rust but I don't remember any holes and all the rust looked... well wet and dark. It didn't seem to ever get any worse. He always did that for... I guess 25 or 30 years, and then he passed away and the family sold them all. When I last saw them, they didn't look much different from when I was 12 or so. So... I can say that your oil thing works, or at least what I saw did. I think the chain oil is a really good idea.

I remember that repair well. It looks like it's holding up pretty well. New, full-sized trucks these days are astronomical...$50K plus, so if you can get by for $3-4K, you're making big bucks. Thanks, Mustie!!

Trucks aren’t that expensive if you get a more base model. They knock 10-15k off the sticker.

Weather went bad fast! Very impressive how you have fixed that truck and kept it road worthy! Fourteen New England winters of "rock-a-salt", sponsored by the American Auto Body Association, is a noteworthy accomplishment.

Salt corrosion isn't seen like that in my part of the world, which is South Australia, unless your vehicle regularly sees beach driving and you fail to properly clean underneath with fresh water. Our ute bodied Toyotas, which are Hiluxs and Landcruisers, never rust away. They usually just die due to old age, big kilometres and fatigue, or a combination of all three. Another great vid 👍👍

I had a brand new mid 80s Isuzu pickup literally dissolve after about 2 years of constant beach usage. Cheap steel, cheap paint and cheap labor, Isuzu wasn't very well made back then. That's why there are very few survivors today.

I had a 91 Toyota pickup. Loved that truck. The bottom of the doors eventually rusted thru, had them repaired and the truck painted. The diff rusted thru, had it cut off and a new cover welded on, Then the oil pan rusted thru. Had to finally give up after 11 years. Powertrain was still solid though.

I bought an 01 Mazda B2300 about a year ago. It only has 49K miles on it and it runs like a dream, but it's never had any preventative measures done to protect it from the Western NY salt. This winter has taken a toll on it. I need to patch some holes in the side of the box and clean the rust off the frame and oil it. I'm going to watch your Toyota frame repair videos... just in case. Your videos are great. Thanks.

Watching this video makes me happy that I live in Texas, and don't have to worry about 'salting' of the roads in the winters.....That's crazy how much rust you can see on the frame & chassis pan of that 15 y/o Tundra. Complete destruction on that frame.

    • @JayCo-1978
      @JayCo-1978 5 років тому +1

I live in Upstate NY and just today I used Texas as a comparison of vehicles. I said that if you go to Texas, you'll see 35 year old trucks that are in better shape than 2 year old trucks in New York. That's why when people are looking for older cars/trucks to purchase, they generally look down south for them, because the bodies don't rot like they do up north. I have a '69 Charger and when I retire in 10 years, I plan on moving to a part of the country where I can drive it year-round and never have to worry about it rusting.

Nice job on the frame. I had the frame on my 83 Hi Lux repaired/welded twice. It finally got to the point there was nothing left to attach to. An amazing truck. Current Tacoma sits in the yard all winter and frame still looks like new (a 97). I'm pretty much convinced that if a cost analysis was done to compare the total consumer cost of frames and bodies rotting away due to salt with the cost of using an alternative (there are a few) that even though the alternatives are costly in the long run the public would be well served by using the more expensive alternatives to salt. And that's not considering the negative environmental impacts of using salt year after year after year.

I got 2 more patch welds on my 1986 Toy 2WD PU frame, tip o'the hat - would never have done it if'n I didn't see you do it first. (If only I had oiled it more) Might be interesting to people out where they don't salt the roads, to show them the Town Garage (what we call it in VT) where they have a huge pile of salt. Then there's the State District piles for the state roads and Interstate. Then there's the piles of sand. Thanks again dude!

Hi Mustie, working out a deal on a 2010 Tacoma. I’m going to use a mixture of UMO,grease and Fluid Film. A touch up at every oil change or whenever I get under the vehicle. I once saw a guy that had an 80’s Tacoma, no rust, he also used bar and chain oil.

Wow wow, we have our problems in the south BUT,,,, THAT damn salt up north is really bad! I wanted to move to Massachusetts until I saw how every vehicle, every vehicle turns into a rust bucket after 5 or 6 years! I think I will stay where I’m at! We can keep a vehicle 15 years down here and with very moderate care hardly have any rust! It is beautiful up there in the winter for sure! I was not sure about your oil process but I have learned after watching over one hundred 💯 of your videos never second guess MUSTIE 1,,,, EVER!!!

You have lots of energy doing all that work. Sale Sale Sale ... My friend had his Toyota Pickup recalled, Toyota had to replaced his frame. That's a good tip for me, keep my old 2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4X4 with no rust at 173,000 miles (the 4.0L OHC purrs, burns no oil). I change the oil and rotate the tires three times a year (Nov,-Mar,-Jul.) . I only drive it 3300 miles since retired, but the engine doesn't run long enough to burn the moisture out of the oil. The oil fill cap will look somewhat chocolate milk, if I don't change the oil. I have no head gasket leaks, the exhaust is clear, no smoke, and inside of the tailpipe looks good and dry. The emission test results are really good for an old truck, I used the spray intakes valve cleaner product twice before. I would love to buy a new Ford Bronco, but at age 72 I probably die before my old truck would. Oh well.

My 1979 Ford rusted to pieces by 82K miles. After I moved to the South I never had a problem with rust- my 1984 truck has no rust at all! There has to be a better way to deal with snow and ice than dumping tons of salt on the roads.

I've always used a 50/50 mix of black waxoyl and engine oil (40 weight) makes for a nice gooey mix that runs slightly when warm but sets like a thin grease when cold and seems to last much longer than just oil or just grease in our climate...the MOT testers around here (UK) hate testing my cars as they get messy but I can live with they're swearing if it means no rust :)... and I drive and old Jag so I'm no stranger to tin worm.

Looks like you guys are having the winter we had over here in Idaho last winter...man I wish we had winters like that every year...this winter has been a dud, most of the winter it was in the 40's some 50's but very few days below freezing...last winter on the other hand, 2 feet of snow, below freezing pretty much all winter, my truck looked like I came down from the arctic LOL, I had my truck in 4WD for a month straight...man talk about terrible fuel economy HAHA. Roads weren't plowed very well if at all, plows would go by and throw all the snow right back into your driveway making it fun to get out. Every time the plow would go by I'd get in the truck and drive through it to keep an open path in and out of the driveway. Still don't have a snow blower, they're useless in the snow like that once the plow throws it back into your driveway its like compacted snow/ice at that point so the blower won't go through it anyhow. Probably won't get another winter like that for another 20 years HAHA!!!

👍 from Montreal, Canada. We get the same problem here from road salts and stones. At least you have a frame to hold that truck together, what about these darn unibody cars and such... galvanized metal or not, it doesn’t take long for rust to destroy a floor pan. Next thing you know, you’re doing a Fred Flintstone through the floor. I usually do an oil/graphite shoot every fall and have good success keeping cars 10+ years. P.S. I know we’re watching you, but we can’t help you if an accident happens while you’re working alone, hope you have a cell phone nearby.

Ah ! It terminally rusted through frame, doors fenders, everywhere in 4 years. Had to take them to court. They wanted to repair the busted and twisted frame. No way. I won and they had to pay half my new car. Never went back. Since then, oil based yearly spray on my 2 cars and 1 truck. No rust at all.

Is that all they did down there for the fix was replaced the frame? Up here in Canada they were giving people Black Book value on the trucks and then sent off to be crushed. A guy I work with at the time went online and bought every Tundra he could find in the area and if they had a rusted frame he bought them up. He ended up turning in eight of them and got anywhere between 14 and $18,000 for each truck and the most he paid for any was $5,000 so he made a killing on that deal

So sad that NH and the other northern states continue to use road salt with the department of transportation refusing to change to other alternatives such as sand, coal cinders, or what ever. They are not held accountable for the billions of damage to rusted out cars, destroyed trees, ruined wells and the like. I left NH back in the mid seventies one of the reasons being that it was B.S. that the damage caused by road salt was being ignored. Moved to the mtns of Colorado and here they use magnesium chloride though while fraught with it's own problems (rotted rubber parts, brake failure, wheel failure, contaminated wells and destroyed trees, at) least we don't have a rust issue. We could use coal cinders but the ski resort areas don't want to see dirty snowbanks as it looks bad to the tourists. Remember, it's all about the money! With all that being said, great videos!

My brother had a 1983 F100 back around 1990. He was religious about changing the oil and sprayed the used motor oil on the frame and underside of the truck. 10 Years go by and the truck had disappeared, more than likely recycled. I blew the engine in my 1999 F-350 and needed something to drive. I didn't have much money so my buddy said he had a an old f100 down in back of the house. I get there to look at the truck and guess what truck it was. Yes sir! it was my brother 1983 f100. The red paint was faded to pink but the frame and underside of the truck looked like new. I drove the truck for several months till I got back on feet. Moral of the story...Oil your frames especially if you live in the northeast US.

Good old Toyota trucks they are hard to kill. The body and frames give out before the motor and trans.

Old trick from the UK, we used Vaseline to cover the chrome on motorcycles in the winter, no rust and no pits, did it on my stainless exhausts too. My bike looked shit all winter and shone so bright it'd blind ya in summer. Vaseline looks much better than oil on chrome work, lol.

The first generation tundras seemed to be built a bit better than the newer ones (2007+). Had far more issues with my 08 tundra than grandpa has had with his 05 tundra.
147k on the 05 tundra with the 4.7L V8, and the 08 tundra had 104k on it when I sold it this past summer, with the 5.7L V8.

Mustie, I'm surprised that you don't use, on 'new' vehicles you may keep a while, rust converter (such as CRC formula) after de-scaling. One or two treatments of that on already-surface-rusted components would protect those surfaces indefinitely via black oxide without a need for bar/chain oil re-treatment. And the thin, milky-white solution would work well in your spray guns. Plus you could also treat the vulnerable exhaust system, driveshaft, etc. without oiling your floor. And as well, no hydraulic wash off. You could recapture over-spray and drip-off with a large, low-profile tote bin, screen filter it and re-use, since it ain't cheap. I plan to do such on my old Explorer when the weather drys this summer, along with door-bottom rework and internal spray down. Oil spray and/or greasing, while effective, seems too messy, temporary and demanding of re-treatment. And once used, pretty much rules out the application of other rust treatments.

I have a 2006 Tundra. They sprayed that black crap on it a few years ago, it seems like it really made things worse for sure. My front gas tank strap broke and all the exhaust mounts are barely hanging on. I also got some bubbling around where the box is bolted on. I wish I could sue them for a new frame. I only have 113,000 miles on it. The power steering is leaking, replacing the rack for 1,200. My end links have been broken for years also. Other than that it runs like a top and rides like a caddy. No rust on the body anywhere. I do live in Wisconsin. Pretty surprised the body doesn't have cancer.

Do they salt your roads? If so, probably best you do something, or else rust will sneak up on you. I've yet to seen the car, truck what have you, that can take the salts on and laugh.

If you live near saltwater or go near it regularly it wouldn't be a bad idea to coat it. That moist salty air gets into places and creates galvanic corrosion. No where near as bad as up here in the rust belt though.
