      Wow I can't believe this actually happened to someone in real life and it lasted 18 years! That's just beyond absurd, but reading the story he also refused to accept help by making impossible demands for his documents to say he is British when he is Iranian. Surprised he was never deported back to his home country but I guess bureaucracy and liberal hand wringing were particularly high during this time of history.

      I’m Bulgarian and it’s pretty good although I can not understand everything. Also in Bulgarian there is no soft “r” which he used a couple of times. Also it’s kinda funny because on some words he just gives up mid-pronounciation and just finishes them with gibberish. But it is still impressive for an westerner.

      Aug24th it WAS back in 2004 when George W. Was still in office. 9/11 was much more current and hey, I mean let’s face facts, it’s a movie. I saw this in theatres when it came out and at that time especially with the political climate, the film seemed to speak volumes allegorically with the Bush administration’s foreign policy and it’s suspicious yet dismissive outlook on foreigners. It was very tongue and cheek and came across as a friendly dipped in fantasy holiday film.

      Eh I've worked in a government position (2017) where I had to deal with a lot of spanish speakers and few translators. Some conversations were a mix of mime and bits of english, even full english, and were wrapped up before a translator was available. The language in this film is meant to be really obscure so I don't doubt they wouldn't give it a shot.

    • @MrDragonorp
      @MrDragonorp 4 роки тому +1

      it's based on a real scenario in France. this actually happened.
      technically an airport is not the actual country, its international waters. in your country airport past the customs until the end of desired country customs, you are in no country, customs allow you to leave a country and enter a country, but not at once.
      you leave a country and that's separate to entering one, that's why he is an anomaly. he has no country to return to, and not a country to enter too. he can't do shit.
      now if the bitches at the airport cared they will get this to the press, and the public will make a high judge just make an exception in some capacity, maybe enter the USA, maybe get refugee, maybe go to another country that allows him to enter. but the bitch there wanted no hassle as he has a promotion coming and he gives zero shits about tom hanks, so he just fallen through the cracks.

      go to your nearest forest, build a shelter on your own, gather your food on your own, manage to make medicine on your own, defend your shelter on your own, oh and dont forget die on your own. if you want to you can live without a government quite easily. you just have to accept that you are now basically a caveman.

      You can renounce your citizenship but it gets very difficult to do anything. Travel? Nope. Work? Forget about it. Drivers license? In your dreams. Get insurance, a mortgage, credit card, benefits/social security? No chance.
      It basically means you don't exist, so governments will ignore you. But without official documents life is incredibly hard as you can prove who you are. Anything that needs ID is essentially off limits.

    As someone who worked for Amazon in dispatching drivers.. I understand that there can be language barriers. I dont understand why he talks fluent English with complicated terms when he is fully aware that Mr Navorski doesnt speak English. We had drivers from dozens of countries that couldnt speak maybe 5-10 words German or none at all, and I managed to tell every single one what to do without knowing their language. Just extremely simplfy it and speak slower, its that easy and you will manage to somewhat get your point across. Mr Dixon was pretty dumb in that sense.

    I can see why this movie isn’t as popular as you’d expect it to be. The premise is outstanding but i think they really did the bare minimum with it, and so many jokes completely flop like the chips and the apple, but some of it great like the “who? Yes!” Part was funny but its something i totally expected to be in a movie with this premise ya know?

    a bit irrelevant to the movie but I realized that when I went to the US for the first time (I am from italy) the passport control/other staff always talked to us in english no matter if you were from a country that spoke a completely different language. And that seems to make sense right? But when I am at the airport in italy or other countries where english is not the language spoken the staff and passport control people still always speak english to american/english foreigners. It's as if every non-native english speaker is expected to know english but people who have english as their first language don't need to learn any other language.
