i was inspired by this video all the way back in lockdown, so much so that I upped my own terrain building and even have my own growing channel now. I have come back to watch this again after maybe three years and it still stands as hands down one of the best terrain videos there is out there, this philosophy of what to do with your terrain is outstanding and it is a genuine pleasure to see you play through your ideas. Too often I end up leaving my physical build to literally minutes before the session... It works well but taking time to explore these themes earlier, like you do takes it to a level above... it practically writes the game for you which I guess ultimately is a good chunk of the point!
2:02 "One word to describe the theme of the dungeon you want to do." 2:09 "Brevity is the king of creativity." I think what you're trying to say is concept which is what my illustration professor used to say. Concept is king!
I’m so glad that people like you and prof dungeon are here to preach the game of D&D as it was in the 70s-80s... That’s EXACTLY how I do dungeons but I use two words (I title my dungeons rough draft with two words...like “Stone Kobolds” or “Ice Lizards”...do you know how cool it is to see someone doing what I do but never thought of how to teach it? Soooooo cool! Runehammer definitely gets d&d (not wotc d&d ... TSR D&D pre 3).
I feel like you just gifted me the seeds to grow themed dungeons. The package says "Runehammer variety mix: Stone, Savage, Ice, Necro, Madness, Thyme, Illusion, Ensnare, Tremor, Flood, Burnt, Broken, Mechanical, Meniacal, Gothic and countless more" Just plant on any imaginary, 2d or 3d surface and watch the creativity blossom. Caution: may cause prolonged periods of immersive gameplay. If gameplay longer than four hours is experienced...
When you were explaining the part about you dont have to transcribe every detail from a map onto your wet erase or your 3d terrain i was thinking thats the exact problem i always have, worrying that my terrain doesnt match whats in the module. Then you looked into the camera and said "Let go Luke" (my name) it really struck a cord. Thank you for encouraging me to care less about the details and just getting on with a great game. My man
When we were dm’ing back in the day, the trick was to find different ways to make the game better (by finding cool things in non-d&d supplements like war games, dragon mag, dungeon mag (meh), and other board games like monopoly, boggle, wizards, etc...). D&D is all about making a game into an EVENING to remember...if you can play for four hours and still be screaming and laughing, you succeeded..
Dooooood! The warlock in my party is a deep gnome mason that is ALL about stones! I'm gonna design a dungeon where he (through his patron) speaks to the stones and opens paths that would otherwise be impossible! Thanks for another awesome idea, Hankerin!!!
This is such an important part of my d&d sessions. I run mostly home brew and I tent to lay out my terrain first and then draw out my map so I can add detail to specific areas. I know, I know, I'm doing it backwards. I've recently decided to run a preexisting module, with the idea that it would help my story telling and DMing skills in general (Sunless Citadel). So I read the story and really enjoyed it. When it came time to recreate the module with 3D terrain i came up to a road block. The map was way to big for me to do. I turned to our RPG community for help. Fistfullofdice, suggested I focus only a couple aspects of the story so I don't get to overwhelmed. He was a great help. I zoned in on the decent into the citadel, it's draconic theme, the feud between the kobolds and goblins, and the underground forest. I junked the original map and made it my own way. It really turned out great and I can't wait to run it. Now I just have to get the party to head back to Oakhurst (I planted a side quest, which my group bought hook line and sinker, in order to give me time to prepare). The point to all this is... it's really important to be able to "translate" your module or home brew into your 3D terrain without getting to caught up on intricate details. This is where your channel has helped me so much. One million thanks. Keep up the great work.
By the way, the first part of the video, the ONE WORD point, is a masterclass on the importance of a clear concept in design. I might end up using it for my clases (if that is ok with you)
On the cover of my DM notebook is a single phrase that I live by. "Keep it simple, stupid!" I've done an A+ job of pretending to know what im doing ever since.
thanks for that awesome piece of advice for me as new gm....really helpfull. just had mi 2nd session few days ago. keep up the awesomeness so we all can learn how to play dnd mo better
Great ideas Hank! Thanks tons! Writing this down in my private "Tips to help me run better games and be a better DM" journal, which, by the way, only contains ideas from your channel so far. LOL! DSBA......Don't Stop Being Awesome!!! 8-D
Super cool video! Consider me bardically inspired to take my dungeons to the next level and make them mo’ bad ass! Like button smashed with mah +3 warhammer
I think this is fine if you have a week between modules and you have time to spitball ideas, write down a bunch of mind dump, collate it all, formulate and timeline it all, flesh it out, make continuity, insert relevant 'cold' monsters etc. Ultimately its a good idea for complex fleshed out ideas. I dont have anywhere near enough time to do all this.
I would encourage you to give this approach another chance and some consideration. I only say that cuz the thing I took away from this is that it helps, and gave me ideas for how to make dungeon building a more focused and therefore quicker process. I have struggled with dungeon making myself. Love to DM games, but creativity as far as story, dungeons, scenarios etc is definitely NOT my strong point. Hank's ideas have allowed me to have much more success in not only coming up with things quickly, but planning and setting them up quickly. Anyways, just thought I'd drop that in because I think that's what Hank's doing with these ideas, helping us with ideas to make things easier and quicker. 8-) Either way, never give up the fight to play D&D like a badass! Cheers.
I wish I could draw so well. I guess it’s all down to just doing it and practice. Truly appreciate your one word approach, because I’m definitely guilty of: describe this in a paragraph... Um... Hm. >_>
If you want to improve the look of the chasm with little effort, look online for images of canyons and such from above and print one off, just lay it out underneath them and it looks a lot better.
When he says living in that tiny little black box i went what im not... then i realized. I sleep in a loft and my computer is under a loft and i live at my computer (The Loft Structure Is Black)
And you did it all wearing a Skeletor T shirt how friggin cool was that? Found you from DMs Craft Scotty list. Like your style need some of that crazy as a bag of cats. "Disclaimer no cats were harmed in the making of this video" ok thanks PETA. Like your terrain pieces very good. From where you hail good sir?
i love the lessons on game design here and have learned a lot from it and from your channel as a whole, but i feel it's important to note that s*vage is an anti-indegnous racial slur, especially in the way you described the word at 5:37. Love the work you do, and i know i'm 4 years late ahaha but I just felt this needed to be said
@@Runehammer1 thank you for replying!! I’m not sure i completely agree with that, but you do specifically relate it to being ‘low-tech’ and ‘tribal in a bad way’ in the timestamp I linked, which i feel is you drawing from on the racist history of the word
I'd kind of like to get into model building from my role-playing game but it's Mutants & Masterminds so I would need to build modern building and streets. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get to start with that. Some things that come to mind, off the top of my head, would be to find some modern gaming maps as inspiration and maybe finding toy cars and such for the street stuff. Other than that I'm not sure.
advice...get your basics, roads, building blocks, cars...then black bomb them and sponge 'em... they look less liek toys and more like a consistent game space
Thanks for that. Honestly since my original post my situation has changed and all my role-playing gaming is done online now (through roll20). I did invest in a large package of map tiles for that now I'm practicing on how to get good maps out of them. In the meantime I've found several sources of good, modern, already made maps I have been able to use. I will keep you advice in mind should my situaiton change again and I hope it does because I miss playing table top. Thanks again.
let 'em...then hav enothing on teh enemies..they turn to ash, dissolve into acidic mush, or have plagues of fleas or biting flies in their useless gear. The better question is why th eplayers even think looting corpses is a thing...video games?
Runehammer Alright. That's kinda what I've been doing. I've been telling them that they find nothing that would be fit for hero's. Dull swords, scraps for armor maybe some gold or a health potion. Thanks for the reply dude. You and the other DM you tubers have been a huge help.
Would it be possible to have a video discussing the reasoning behind it all? My guess is that you'd like to appear a bit more "professional" now that you are publishing material and all that. And great video as always, makes me wanna play some D&D like a big ol badass!
Wow wait, since when has the name of the channel changed ? I liked the old name... Does it means you won't be drinking mead and other manly beverage anymore ? PS: i still think the new name is great though. A one word name has more punch to it and is easier to remember, so great move on that one.

I really miss these old videos. Your terrain was great and how you walked through the boards was exciting.

I just started 3D terrain, liking it, but still only use it when we need it.

This Forest board is so damn good, I keep coming back to it and love it

Wow I've missed about 2 months of videos....notification bell now clicked. Thanks, UA-cam robot overlords.
Hankerin is solid gold, and no amount of name changes will slow this lumpy-headed sage down a bit!

Woah dude. That intro with the whispers and the bass was so brutally awesome! Thanks for opening the floodgates.
These are my favorite kinds of videos that you produce. They give me DM thoughts to mull over as I create for my own campaigns.

Love the Skeletor shirt
This is gold. Solid gold.
Bill Allan no you’re dead wrong it’s stone!
Oh damn! It's my other favourite D&D UA-camr commenting on my other favourite D&D UA-camr!
Sometimes I find it easier to determine the final result of the scenario & then 'back' into each preceding situation.
Yep!
Excellent video, great stuff, but you would have deserved a "like" on the grounds of your T-shirt alone! Go mate!
That intro gave me goosebumps! Good job Hankerin'!
sick intro my guy
Super important to nail down the "Hgnaaaagh" of a dungeon.
Gracias maestro! great video man. You are somebody to look up to

'I've never even made a dungeon. I don't even know where to begin.' ... 'Stoned.... Savage.' That's why we're all here man!
"This is a tiny warhammer... aaaarrrrggghhhh!!" 😂😂😂 brilliant!!!
@2:09 - nailed it!
Great vid, Hank's patreon is amazing too FYI, stuffed with content, totally worth checking out
Great vid. Thumbs up just for the t-shirt.
Super cool video! Consider me bardically inspired to take my dungeons to the next level and make them mo’ bad ass! Like button smashed with mah +3 warhammer
Awesome shirt, awesome new name, awesome content as always Hankerin!
Sweet intro and outro HF. Getting pretty damn pro. Dont forget about us when you get your first movie deal on the book series!
Keep on producing good staffs !
Take care

Kamryn M I think it was like a derelict Kmart
Hey there hankering hangnail! Any suggestions for creating social encounters?
Good idea...
I am a new DM and I was wondering what type of 3d modular building set you got and if you recommend it
i make my own stuff mostly

Cool, thanks. For some reason this is the first time I'm seeing this even though it's a month old. So disorginazed am I. :)
There's several modelers who do modern stuff. Also look into other hobbies like model trains they have tons of stuff and ideas for you.

Runehammer ty for the fast reply, I started watching you vids a few days ago, and im loving it!

well sure, but you just go with what happens!
