KB is from the Tampa/St Pete area in FL. I believe he was about 18 when he connected with another young local rapper (Sekpnd Chaynce aka Trevor Godspeed Williams) and founded the crew HGA (His Glory Alone). Together they went all around the greater central Florida area doing any event they could, most of which I was also the DJ for. In 2012 he got his first radio spins on my radio show on am 1110 WTIS in St Pete FL. By the end of the year KB had two of his tracks from his self produced underground album on the Top 10 list and added to regular rotation at La Nueva 88.3 FM in Miami after my guest spot on a Friday night show (a station who had boasted over 100k regular for Friday nights). Soon after HGA performed at Flavor Fest in Tampa FL at Crossover Church and went on right before the headlining act (Lecrae and the 116 Clique aka Reach Records). HGA blew the spot up to epic proportions leading Lecrae and Tedashii to spend the first 5 min of their set talking about how amazing HGAs set was. After the event, Lecrae and Tedashii were hunting for and eventually found the and began talking to them about joining the label. Fast forward a bit and Reach Records chose to only take KB rather than the current 3 members of HGA after some personal life complications. KB the. Put out some albums fast as he had a mission. To this day, I still think his second album, Tomorrow we Live is one of the most complete and perfectly made albums (play it in order without breaking between songs) ever made in music, period. While I was present for much of his fledgling career prior to Reach, his success is solely due to him and God. His study, work ethic, talent, character and drive are the keys to his success and certainly a model to be honored and recognized.
If KB and Lecrae weren't always being cucked by the label of "Christian Rap" that people put on them, (which they don't even identify as anymore), we'd be putting them in the same conversation as The Eminem's, Kendricks, J Cole's etc. Lecrae has some absolute masterpiece albums that are undeniably on the mount rushmore of classic hip hop albums, and KB's production has put him in the running for album of the year nearly every year for the past half decade. Lecrae never gets his flowers despite the fact that he's been pioneering a lot of the most innovative production for almost a decade. A lot of the "innovative" production techniques that some of your favorite rappers are currently praised for, we're being used and pioneered by Lecrae, Andy Mineo, Tedashii etc.. almost a decade ago. A lot of "Christian Rap", for lack of a better term, is way ahead of the game in terms of production and conceptual value. Everyone should give these dudes their flowers. They are legends that have undeniably helped shape the landscape of hip hop.
Sadly, most of the 116 clique goes under the radar. Lecrae tried to be an olive branch to the world hip hop and the only person who really messed with his message and actually gave him props was Tech N9ne. The mainstream hip-hop kinda just tossed him aside due to him being Christian. I always have respected KB the man hasn't compromised anything since he became part of the 116 clique. KB has some absolute fire albums, Lecrae does too. I followed Lecrae before he began his dive into the world to let people know who he was. Even Lecrae's older albums are solid but to most they would be deemed "too preachy". But I agree with you, in the sense that these guys have an amazing message and deserve to be put up there with the greats because they're doing something. Someone I really want Stevie to check out is Canon, man is an absolute lyrical machine. Growing up I used to rock with all the 116 clique, Derek Minor, KB, Social Club, and Bizzle. All of them deserve there flowers, the kind of positivity they bring to the genre is what is needed. Everyone always boasts about NF and his ability to not curse in his music, there are many many many more who do the same thing but don't get recognized.
