Klei really did their worse making a range character, so bad that Wolfgang is a better range character with his dumbbells, than Walter lol
It's really insane how much you can do with dumbells and especially the 100% damage perk. What can worth crabking cheese and splumonkey farming?

Walter is not a ranged character he's a support character/ exploration character. He's meant for assisting a team rather than simply doing ranged attacks. His slingshot helps him out a ton with that. He's not that powerful because yes he's not meant to do melee but he has a slingshot to help out with bosses and enemies. Also Wolfgangs dumbbells are probably not easy to just stock up on so you won't be able to go purely ranged unlike Walter who can stock up on his ammo to do that
@@Trigger_productions_mato mate, Walter sucks, even if we forgive him all his stupid useless perks, design and lore wise, he is the only character who smiles, in a game such as don’t starve, one of the most grim looking… even Wes aka literal clown doesn’t smile…
@@OppyOzzborz-sb8oz it's because he is the fearless. He smiles because even in the most hopeless and saddening times he is not scared or intimidated, he is confident he can pull through. And no he doesn't suck. He's not good at the things that usually make a character good but he's good at other things. Most people would say that Wes sucks, memes aside he's pretty good for exploration which is a strong suit for Walter too. Also he's perks are also not random, they complement each other strangely well for how seemingly random they are on paper. Also the feel of a character is important when judging them. I like how Walter feels to play. Characters like wurt are said to feel good to play but not be that strong on paper. And don't starve is not pure hopelessness, it has comedy elements as well. Also his slingshot is not meant to be the only weapon used but rather a weapon to help you when you aren't right beside the opponent. If you are only using melee or only using the slingshot as Walter you are dumb. I play Walter and he's the only character in good at. I'm a total noob but as Walter I can at least get to a hound wave where everyone else I die on like day 3.

As if right now the 3 or 4 characters I would expect to get a skill tree next beta would be, Willow/Warly/Winona since this characters have some bad cons that are either bad or annoying. Willow not in the same level as other good survives because or skills or more on Players are learning the game and have a hard time early game. Warly (as said before about his skills) has cons that weighs more compare to his pros. Winona is just simply a swap character late game.
My other characters 2 characters I think would have a skill tree is Webber mainly because I keep hearing "ride a spider queen" and I don't have anything to say.
And lastly Wortox because his cons felt annoying rather than challenging, losing sanity from too much souls felt annoying because it can happen so suddenly when fighting lots of monsters and you would instantly loss souls and sanity. Foods being 50% less effective is by far the most annoying thing for me because it makes me think your required to farm resources twice more just to gain hunger, ofc you can just eat for example 1 meatball + 1 soul so that you gain a good amount of hunger while not eating another meatball, but that also results to Wortox being a "character that must farm constantly to maintain souls" since Wortox use souls everyday anyways.
Of all characters I think Winona is the one that could use a skilltree the most, she's a completely blank slate. the fact that her only notable perk functions completely independently of her means that she isn't really a character, she desperately needs more abilities. Considering just how much love Woodie has been getting since his skill tree I think this could be a really good opportunity to revolutionize the way we see certain characters

Walter is good if you aren't new at the game, yes he's hard to play but that's the point of dst isn't it??? I main Walter and Warly both are great for playing dst in a different way (Walter just don't get hit, base in the caves) and (Warly farming/bee farms and base in the oasis, cook all the OP foods and spice them up) just so you know that yes I think that they both will get better with the new skilltrees but that's just because all of them will get one. so after all have one I'm sure you'll still think he's bad.
I think the main problem people have with walter is that they try to play him like any other character.
When he is not. He is a support character.
Plus this whole thing was about his sanity mechanic
Walter is definitely not easy but he certainly has the most untapped potential.

The sanity perk is kinda reductant, maybe contradictory, no? He get access to nightmare fuel, but he is made to "avoid dark swords". I like to use walter to get feathers/gold. its strange, you get a lot of nightmare fuel, but your main weapons are made with gold/marble, things that walter doesn't get from his perks (except maybe trading morsels of birds for gold).
Hope his skill tree makes him better. I had a lot of fun playing him in the past, the first time i killed bearger by myself was using his slingshot. but it's really it, his ranged combat is good in groups but in a solo world (without using beefalo) its really bad, with bosses with +5k health drain a lot of resources and time
The only thing Walter can use that uses nightmare fuel, is the cursed rounds, which does the same amount of damage that marble rounds do, BUT summons shadow tentacles.
@@B_4035mn cursed rounds are better because most fuel weaver and AG strategies make them still, so the shadow tentacles do a lot more damage and speed up the fight
Very obvious that Walter's biggest con for me is losing sanity when receiving damage, and the slingshot dps not matching with melee weapons making slingshots slower weapons in general. If you play melee as Walter your gonna worry about getting damage bcuz you could lose 80% of your sanity in just 3-4 or more depending on gear you have. For range, you deal lower dps compare to Wes with a weapon, making boss fighting slower than normal which already feels annoying if you think about it.
I think if anyone REALLY wants to play Walter, just use him with a beefalo and tame either a Ornery it completely removes his cons like the sanity loss from damage because the beefalo will just tank for you, the best part is when fighting Bosses with strong sanity loss, Walter negates that completely and you won't have to worry about sanity foods. Although the only problem are range enemies which are only 2 (spitter spider and clockwork bishop) that exist and can directly hit Walter while riding a beefalo, but there the only enemies that exist in the game and you won't fight them regularly anyways.

Walter is not made for solo combat or melee in general. He's designed for support and exploration.
3 monster meat to transform Woby. Woby does NOT get small again by damage and has a hidden hunger meter instead and when that reaches zero she gets small again. (Where did you get this bad info?)
Walter and Warly both are charecters that change up gameplay and of course we all know that change is awful. We can't have a character that highly rewards kitting because i just want to tank. We can't have a character that has a hat that benefits him because i want to wear a football helmet or eyebrella there is no other option.
Walter is not a range character. His title isn't "the sharpshooter", "the beast master", "the ranger" or even "the boy scout". His name and title is "Walter, the fearless". He is a sanity character and i think the designers tried to figure out what kind of person wouldn't be scared of anything and thought up of a naive boy that wanted to go on adventures. If he likes to adventure then maybe he is a scout.
The great things about this game is there are different characters that different people will like. Not everyone plays the same way and the game is better for catering to different people who want to do different things
As a Walter main I agree. I am a noob as dst but I still love playing Walter because I don't like tanking anyways. I would rather stay out of danger and Walter also is supposed to be a support character mainly made for exploration. He's relaxing to play as compared to other characters.
Walter is not a bad character. Your argument is "he's bad at tanking and melee and range is weak" . You shouldn't tank as any other character anyways, you should play smart to avoid as much damage as possible. Also woby is not supposed to be your only ride but simply a good ride before a beefalo. Also all characters can be good if you have a strategic way to approach gameplay for that character. Wes is good for exploration early game using a speedy balloon which means he can get relatively good gear. Wilson can craft irradcent gems which makes him not need to do some pretty tedious shit while in the ruins. Walter is really good for cave basing and exploration. I don't think any character is bad
As you said, it's your opinion and it really sounds like it's based more on feel than objectivity. Don't get me wrong, he's not amazing, but definitely not the worst character. The reason people don't play him and don't want you to play him, is either because he is, currently, straight down boring or because he brings nothing of "real value" to the "together" experience. In the hands of a skilled / semi-skilled player, he can kite almost everything... but his play style becomes boring fast.
Woby is Ok for early-game scouting and as an extra personal Chester. Any decent player will simply tame a beefalo instead and overcome all the issues that you've correctly listed for Woby. And then what? Well, then you no longer have to (or rarely have to) worry about getting directly hit, so don't actually have to worry about losing sanity due to being injured (and even if you get hit, it's easy to heal up). And then? You just kite everything from afar using gold rounds 99% of the time, since gold is very, very easy to get (e.g.: fish up a few eels and exchange them). Sure, you can use other stuff to make fights a bit faster and somewhat less boring, but who care if you kill the boss a bit faster? Either way, he just gets boring fast and he doesn't have any realistic team play. He is not a character for beginners (exactly because beginners WILL get hit and they WON'T know how to manage their sanity, tame a beefalo, get gold easily, heal easily, etc. and will just get killed/overwhelmed by shadow creatures), but in the hands of an experienced player, he is a somewhat cheesy character that does average damage and has a somewhat boring and ranged play style. Many of your points are Ok, valid, but only when Walter is played by a beginner/new player. More experienced players have no issue with managing/gaining sanity, kiting mobs, healing, etc. etc. etc.
Can imagine walter mains trying to defend their bad character instead of asking for buffs

A Walter hotfix to make him more enjoyable would've been so easy, litterally make his slingshot shoot faster to be on par with melee weapons and let Woby tank hits for you while you're riding her
Walter still has glaring issues that probably needs more than a simple hotfix but the fact that he really hasn't been changed since launch kinda bugs me

Also I do like the gameplay of Walter, especially in team settings which is where i think he thrives the most. which makes me wish he was more unique and cohesive even more
I still do think he needs an update (and I hope it's to his base kit, not just his skill tree). Mostly just his slingshot imo, I don't really think Woby needs to be changed anymore. Either make it faster or longer range. Idc which, just something so that I actually enjoy using it.
@@juuuunii658 I think that your supposed to eventually get a beefalo instead of sticking with woby, woby is meant for traveling where beefalo are meant for combat (as Walter, they are handy for both as any other character). And I don't want Walter to change. I love how he plays because I don't feel stressed or bored while playing him
@@Trigger_productions_mato Yeah, I was just justifying what I thought 10 months ago, I don't really think woby needs much change atm. I think i meant more so for early game or if you donn't rush beefalo. Obv Woby isn't supposed to be on par with Beefs for tanking, I think that would be unbalanced.
And yeah, Walter is low stress which is why I also like playing him. But I still think he has some issues (mainly that he doesn't feel cohesive and his slingshot sucks)
I think my opinion on Walter right now is that he's alright, I like playing him, still waiting for his skill tree to make him feel more fleshed out, definitely better than I originally thought in the original comment, but his base slingshot without the skill tree should be buffed (either attack speed or range).

No his FOOD is op, he does nothing. You get the crops, you switch to Warly, you cook a ton of stuff, you bundle it, you switch back, done. No point in ever actually PLAYING Warly.

@@Failzz8 tbf warly (and other "swap" characters) will hopefully get a skill tree that'll push him more in the direction of being a better stand alone character. so I guess the celestial portal probably doesn't need to be changed (I still hate it)
Ok, hear me out now, Walter is the best character *FOR KILLING MONSTERS,* since he doesn't have any negative sanity drain unlike Wolfgang and all of the other characters, also, Walter easily kills Klaus just by spamming morsels to get gold rounds, and shooting him just out of his agro range.

Yes, tame a beefalo immedaitely and he trivializes a LOT of the game since the beefalo literally gets rid of all his downsides, while still leaving his upsides intact, and immediately taming a beefalo is arguably the most optimal way to play the game anyways. The problem then however is, just cheesing everything with range gets old pretty quick.

Walter can shoot 50 dmg marble bullets while not taking a single hit by enemies
@@mr.j410 He can shoot one marble shot for 50 damage once every few seconds... that's literally Wes with a dark sword damage (maybe worse) 💔
Also Wolfgang can do more damage with his dumbbels so he's more viable for ranged damage
@MisterBones223 few seconds.... bro that's a lie, I've killed every boss. And made it to 1000 days with walter. If u learn how to kite with my Boi. U get 3 to 4 shots between every enemy attack
