PvE was never Overwatch’s main thing the way it was with Left 4 Dead or Payday. But Blizzard promised a lot. They built enormous PvE anticipation as the primary excuse for a new title- and then betrayed it.
PVE was never coming. The funniest part about the whole thing is that people are genuinely shocked. This is been Blizzards MO for a long time now and yet people are still getting duped I guess it's true what they say: "There's a sucker born every minute"
One thing that sticks in my head is when Jared Nuss says "clearly we couldn't continue to deliver at the level YOU expect" so... it's our fault as gamers I guess for being just too darn demanding in our relationship with a multi billion dollar game developer probably a bad take but that line stick in my brain
Not a bad take at all. A lot of people probably put money into this game because of the promise of PvE coming eventually. A lot of people probably players who otherwise wouldn't because of it. They lied about a major component of the game and aren't delivering. They could hire more people or better manage teams, I have a very hard time believing there aren't enough employees to do both.
Hoo boy, I’m just saying, Tears of the kingdom brought way more then they promised. (Without in game purchases mind you.) I’m just saying, if your going to promise something, don’t snort your coke and turn around blaming your fans for being disappointed that you couldn’t deliver what they’ve been expecting for four years. Maybe don’t make promises like that?
Other Devs: "We wanted to only make a DLC, but it got so big that it turned into its own game." Blizzard: "We announced a sequel, and then turned it into something that would stretch the definition of even a DLC too generously."

The worst part is how limitless the potential of Overwatch truly is. Every single character could be the main character of a triple A game. They canceled the comics for this. They killed overwatch 1 for this.
Overwatch 1 can be patched, the engine could be moved by doing what us in IT industry calls "parallel processing" (running old and the new system at the same time then slowly out phase the old system) or they could just work on that new system and patch... Then turn off servers for a week to do a one step implementation of the new system. (Which many games had already done in the past btw) Then we got this half baked game, whose priority is selling you in-game items for the price of half a AAA title. While the mechanics that made it fun and exciting, where stripped out of the game and made them barebones.
@@yay842 Name one character that wouldn't be a baller main character if they designed a game around them? They're all very compelling designs. Blizzard is shit, but give credit where it's due.
The part where u mention the team "patting themselves on the back" over the little amount that they DID do, has been so true for years as a path2pro player for a long time. For 2 years straight since they stopped updating ow1 to focus on ow2, they would go on interviews every few months for "exciting game announcements" where they would practically just talk about nothing for 30 minutes straight, show that bastion would have a hat, then talk about how great the development team is working on the game. This should not be surprising at all for anyone whose kept up with OW consistently
The _entire_ reason OW2 exists is because they claimed they needed a new engine to be able to pull off what they wanted to do in the PvE (lighting, weather effects, etc), but switching to that new engine broke so many things. Lots of old features are still missing because they couldn't port them over, and they even had to disable characters (Mei, Torb, Bastion) because of game-breaking bugs that suddenly popped up. And don't forget, in a Game Informer interview from Sept 2022, Aaron Keller stated that it took them _OVER A YEAR_ just to make one mythic skin. These people aren't just con artists, they're completely and utterly incompetent.
And it's a blatant lie that they needed to change the engine, because the engine for overwatch 1 managed all of that just fine, great even! And it handled PVE way better than Overwatch 2 is. The anniversary pve modes (uprising, retribution and storm rising), as well as the Halloween junkenstein's revenge, all were great and showcased how to make a hero shooter with a PVE facto
@@sev1120 Plus many live service games have had complete engine revamps and changes and not been released as a sequel. War Thunder has had like 4 or 5 different engines granted it is more of a game where you grind out the things you play.

You are absolutely right. The PvE was the only reason the game was still on my console. I miss OW1 and there was a reason it was the only pvp FPS game I played. I haven’t put any money down on this one but I had been ready and willing to pay for that story mode. The announcement was the biggest disappointment up to date which is an “achievement” on its own.😡
After playing since day 1 I feel this. Finally had to uninstall and stop continuing my disappointment streak every time I expect good news from overwatch.
My hypothesis on Corporate Mentality: 1. Declare PVE is canceled (6 yrs content over) 2. Wait for upset fans to blow over 3. Re-purpose scrapped PVE content into small elements of the " New events/skins/maps and content" 4. Monetize the shit out of step 3 to recuperate losses for 6 years of PVE development.
I have a similar hypothesis: "we need to monetize the hell out of this game somehow" "ok let do absolutely nothing to update the game and make it so you cant get skins through playing anymore, but we promise that theres a really cool update coming. Then when the storm passes we cancel the promise and boom, fully monetized soulless game and all we had to do was the bare minimum"
No, it actually took a really long time for Blizzard to ruin their reputation. I'd say it's taken at least since Overwatch 1, but maybe longer. Basically, it took a decade for them to bring through all their goodwill
Imma cut them some slack because they didn't expect this game to blow up buuuuut they had years to fix it but decided to make a league just to make gamers addicted to Adderall...
You glanced over the worst part, they actually scrapped the PvE last year and are only now revealing the decision. So, the excuse for this year's content being lackluster due to the heavy development of PvE is about as real as the 2 on Overwatch2
It's probably because they had massive departures. Blizzard has been bleeding people for a while now. Mostly because they enforced people to go back into offices. Since people declined and quit, they now have to train a lot more people, slowing down the output of content.
Blizzard has way to high standards for themselves. They always cancel shit and pull projects. They need to chill and just deliver some OK content, does not haft to be gut tier...Look at warcraft 3, why did coustome maps get so popular.
Bro that opening segment hits hard. I just feel the community gachunking their desks simultaneously. Every time blizzard talks there is a disturbance in the force man
This actually put the nail in the coffin for me in OW. I used to love the game, played it every day, loved all the events and whatnot. I was also really looking forward to the story mode eventually. Then OW 2 came out and I thought "ahh theyll add PVE later, itll be fine :) " and was even more excited. Now i feel like theres no point. The story and characters was the most interesting part. Very few multiplayer FPS games actually have a good story thats interesting to me, and OW was one of them. but it looks like the devs dont give a shit so theres no point in playin for me anymore.
Exactly the same for me, some of my fondest gaming memories are from overwatch, used to love it so so much. This just feels like a spit in the face for anyone who has ever had faith or love for the game.
It’s where my girlfriend and I met years ago and have continued to play and support the game. Now we’ve both quit after all the fun events and memories. It sucks that this is where the game has gone 😢
I just don't believe the PVE was ever even BEING developed. Just smells like another bait-and-switch, another Blizzard rugpull. They suckered their idiotic fans in again, saying everything they wanted to hear. I'd say people have to learn eventually, but they won't. At this point I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop with Diablo 4. I remember Blizzard standing on a soapbox promising it wouldn't be like Diablo Immortal. No in-game marketplace, no currencies, no purchased power, no battlepasses etc etc. Blizzard don't though, and they know their audience don't remember and will buy it anyway.
Then that person doesn't know Blizzard very well. Blizzard has canceled games before, hell Starcraft Ghost was done, it was about to ship when Blizzard decided it wasn't gonna meet the standards and expectations the fans would have, so they canceled it. A game that was in it's gold status, meaning it was done. These day's Blizzard doesn't stand for quality anymore so they produce one turd after another, but there was a time Blizzard had standards and if they weren't met, they would cancel it or delay it till it was proper, like Warcraft 3 being a meme before we even knew the term meme, it got delayed so many times that each time a new release date was set the bets were on "Is it gonna release this time yes or no?".
Ghost Ship Games really delivers with Deep Rock Galactic. It's a hell of a pve co-op fps experience. Also, the community is amazing. If overwatch 2 is enough of a disappointment that you need to find something to quench that thirst for such a game, check it out. Rock and Stone!
Yep, stopped playing Blizzard the moment he did so, in fact that wasn’t the only red flag Blizzard had popping out of their dying deceased horse. All I gotta say is that I was not surprised what so ever that the campaign was dropped, I saw that shit many miles away. I would’ve been confused as to why it didn’t drop sooner until I realized that it was literally the driving point as to why people played overwatch “2” in the first place.
Thank you Charlie for sympathizing with my pain. Being an Overwatch fan is like having your father promise to get you a gift before he gets drunk a few hours later and decides to beat you over the head with an empty bottle instead.
Im just amazed game developers haven't been sued for false advertisements at this point. They'd known for quite some time it wasn't going to be added, and they sat on it.
As a game dev myself, I feel terrible for all the 3d artists and programmers working on the PvE all this time. Imagine working on something for 4 years only to have all your hard work thrown away in an instant.
I don't think they were ever really working on it. I think the entire point of slapping a 2 to the name was just so they can have a reason to revamp the reward system into a store. They want to prey on peoples FOMO and charge 20 dollars a pop per skin. The promise of PvE was likely just a cover to get fans to follow them without complaining.
At this point I truly believe the only reason they updated the game to Overwatch 2 was to slap a battle pass on the game and shift from free earnable cosmetics to aggressive monetization. Definitely one of the video game sequels of all time.
can't believe it took some people this long to noticd. Should have been clear as day the moment they announced it would be F2P, especially when they revealed the ever-present battle pass
@@Derivedwhale45 i hated battle passes in games from the beginning. Lootbox era was bad but battle bass is just somehow even worse. I just don't get why every single game has to follow the current monetization trend.

Yea if you told me years ago that today all these franchises would be a complete dumpster fire and that CSGO would be in arguably the best state it’s ever been in with a sequel around the corner, I’d call you crazy.
So basically let me get this straight: They stripped our OW1 rewards, took our level profile borders, didn't give us old player's access to the old skins with our old currency till SEASON 3, neglected the community for two years because of PvE, recycled events, THEN they make a FTP model with promises of PvE, not even giving proper Beta access to early/loyal players that have been around since pre-ordered/beta for OW1, even if you max a pass over 200 levels (you can by doing bare minimum aka daily logins/weeklies or less if you're a streamer/T500) but you still get nothing after to progress your border, and now no more PvE skill trees that must hit hard for a lot of us that played for a long time. They branded OW2 as a PvE and FPT PvP experience only to completely scrap the whole thing except their monetization methods. IG they made their bag and dipped lolll
I'm sad to say that i'll be uninstalling overwatch 2 and battle net as of today, I have so many fond memories of overwatch, i remember being a highschool freshmen and staying up till 3 am in my uncles room while he was away playing this game with friends, screaming at the top of my lungs and just all out having a blast, i remember the first time i hit masters and i felt like i was on top of the world, I remember when i first started to play sombra and was enthralled in her gameplay and lore, becoming determined to be the best at her on console ladder, I remember being in school and being tired from a long night of gaming the day before, but also excited to come home and play even more. This game was essentially my little childhood i got, most of my childhood was plagued with tragedy from a broken home and family, but this game was the only place where i felt happy, where i felt like I had friends who liked me, where i felt at peace, I loved it because even though life treated me poorly and that I felt completely worthless and alone, it was overwatch that was my hero and gave me friends that i cherish today and memories that i will hold on too forever. It feels strange to leave it behind, almost like the end of an era for me, but also symbolic as it also feels like im moving on from my childhood. I'm 20 now and im almost at tears as i type this, but I will always love you overwatch, im sorry things ended up this way and i wish that they didnt, and i will always love you sombra, i will miss playing as you and hearing your snarky quips and im sorry i have to leave you behind, my only gem from that game. Goodbye overwatch.
The biggest change between 1 and 2 was the monetization model; adding a paid battlepass and charging $20 for skins that used to be free and easily accessible by just playing the game. Their only real justification for replacing the first game was wringing as much money as they can from the wallets of their fans. The new maps, balancing, and characters are cool, but those are all things we were already recieving regularly in the first game
I mean balancing? What balancing.. they made the game worse with 5v5, and then scuffed the balancing for a long ass time, to a point where you'd be forced to play 5v5 to have an even remotely good time I remember a week ago I actually put a post up on forums and people were high on copium, only for this announcement to drop really satisfied but also just saddened me
I started playing and got addicted 3 months ago. But I never realised how bad it was until they pointed it out. I keep getting stuck in bronze 5 even though I won 20 matches and 2 loss in open que. Also, I keep losing in role que because teammates are leaving or griefing. Why do we all receive a loss when its only one at fault?
Leaving your GOTY without content during the pandemic were everyone was playing games to then cancel what was supposedly developed during this time period gotta be one of the dumbest decisions in gaming history.
@@adamb5147 and other games had content being made in the pandemic? there will be a slowdown but no excuses for a triple A company to not have content for 2 years.
If the PVE content they plan on releasing and making for the game is like the other PVE content and things they made during events and such already and in the past (which I imagine it is, maybe bigger and longer than previous ones) then thats even more of a let down than just scrapping the PVE all together, its like rubbing salt in a open wound and squeezing lemon juice into eyes supremepatty style.
The craziest thing that ive been saying for awhile now about overwatch/blizzard is how they r just fuking sleeping on a gold mine of an Arcane type animated series. Their cinematics r amazing, like how have they NOT done something like this yet for almost 7 yrs now is insane to me
As a programmer subtraction can be extremely difficult to do properly. It took me YEARS to master this art and I still get it wrong. Grades 1-3 were rough
3.3 - 1.1 != 2.2. Subtraction in computers IS hard if it's relating to IEEE754 (floating point numbers). Though OW2 could trivially remove an extra team member, most likely a constant somewhere, possibly requires changing their GC or whatever they use.
What you need to remember is that in order to get overwatch into overwatch 2, they pretty much factory reset everyones profiles. Everything locked again.
I was a fan of both :/ Decided to uninstall battlenet for good, and their next big game diablo 4 can rot in hell along with it. The only ties I'll keep is ModernWarfare 2... but I have it on Steam, it's managed by the Activation side, and I didn't actually purchase it because it was gifted to me by a friend :) So I'm fine with that lol
There aren't two games. There's only one. Ow"2" was never a sequel, it was a monetization rework. They stripped many things from the original game, are reselling some of them at exorbitant prices, are fumbling just about every balance change, and of course now are cancelling the one thing people could possibly hold out hope for. I'm inclined to believe that anyone who spends money on this game any further, is a complete moron and deserves whatever dogshit blizzard dumps in their mouth
The most annoying thing is they kept excusing lack of content updates by saying they were putting resources into PVE but then they told us they scrapped PVE and showed a roadmap that was still lackluster.
@@uhk839 yep, this wasn’t a couple weeks decision. They never announced it cuz of a multitude of reasons, mainly for excusing their sub-par content in pvp.
They never worked on PVE they just build a prototype to market the game more and more then made it Free2Play and then Battle Pass every month or 2 , it hasn't been a full year and it got 6 Battle Passes 6 seasons , and night maps now day maps.

What’s wild is the community managed to almost make what they promised for ow2 in ow1 with custom games using a limited tool set and creating for free. There were some absolutely wild custom community made games but a multi billion dollar company couldn’t manage that with almost no limitations while making a fortune doing it
not really the same thing to drag blocks in a template and select configs to make a custom game compared to actually coding a game while having security, user simplicity and such in mind. Not hating on you and I’m aswell devastated that they scraped PVE but you can’t compare the 2 on an equal scale
@@lawrence9806 Blizzard didn’t design design the workshop to be a game engine like unity. You can’t design a whole new map and new characters with new abilities in there if you get it
I get what you're saying, and more or less agree, but however many thousands of developers ABK employs, you gotta consider how many different products they're working on... and then multiply that number by at least five or six, since there's probably a lot of in-development projects that haven't been made public. Again, I more or less agree with you, just want to spread awareness of the actual reality of personnel distribution in these sorts of companies.
So I gotta ask now, as someone who pre ordered the game back when it was stated that it would be a PvE experience and such, is this now considered false advertising? Is this something that they can actually do? Because if so I want to ask, am I entitled to a refund of the game since they're doing this? The product I purchased is now not the product that was advertised and I'm curious if there's anything I can do to get that money back
Overwatch 2, by itself, is free to play, so no. You did not actually buy anything PVE related, so there's nothing to refund. However, when Overwatch 2 was being advertized...well, it seems like its price was very confusing, as several pages on several platforms would direct you to the Watchtower pack for 40$ instead of the free to play multiplayer. If you actually paid for anything for Overwatch 2, then you paid for some kind of battle pass, cosmetics or currency. The best thing you can do now is simply stop playing. A live service game losing its playerbase is usually the death of said game. That WOULD be disappointing for Overwatch itself, but it would definitely send a message to blizzard that you cannot keep abusing and lying to a playerbase forever. At some point the good will runs out.
When buying products online, dependent on the Terms of Service with the game, you are basically buying a "license" for them and getting entertainment value in return. In shorter terms, you are putting money down the drain for non-existent things.

I’m assuming they couldn’t get the AI working. I can’t imagine adding skill tree progression is *that* hard with what they already have in place, and I hope it wasn’t a lack of story they could come up with, but the actual E part of PvE, for a multiplayer game with no basic AI enemies (like Titanfall, I know they can have the hero’s controlled by AI) is probably hard to get working.

(Which many games had already done in the past btw)
Then we got this half baked game, whose priority is selling you in-game items for the price of half a AAA title. While the mechanics that made it fun and exciting, where stripped out of the game and made them barebones.
Overwatch one maps were superior to Overwatch 2 maps and it's not even a competition. OW2 is just a poorly made game to begin with.

The crazy part here they already cancel the game WAY EARLIER than the announcement itself

@@3takoyakis They had to keep up appearences, had they announced that the PVE/Story was cancelled no one would have bought that 40 dollar package.

2 on overwatch 2 means the 2 people who like it and dont feel scammed

The biggest change between 1 and 2 was the monetization model; adding a paid battlepass and charging $20 for skins that used to be free and easily accessible by just playing the game. Their only real justification for replacing the first game was wringing as much money as they can from the wallets of their fans. The new maps, balancing, and characters are cool, but those are all things we were already recieving regularly in the first game

I remember getting OW1 because I thought there would be a story mode. To wait all these years to get to ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME I WAS ADVERTIZED to get nothing because of crappy executives chasing the money instead of the fun-- I'm never touching another Blizzard title again.

Don't forget: If you bought the original Overwatch 1 you not only lost access to it but also got effectively nothing as compensation for it, on top of the fact that basic access to new heroes is tied to a battle pass that takes excessive grinding which (by pure random chance) upon BUYING will grant immediate access to the character without grinding at all.
That's so true - as someone who pre-ordered or got the legacy version or whatever it was, I've always felt like with OW2 they ended up stealing from me, no matter how many hours I got in it originally. There's a lot of game studios that are given 4-7 years to make a game by the publisher and they end up spending all that time procrastinating until the last 2 years. Then when work finally starts, they just keep missing deadline after deadline. I wouldn't be surprised if this was something like that, but to the point of the whole thing getting scrapped probably means they didn't even start.
Being an Overwatch fan right now feels like your realizing the person you've been married to and have kids with is the type of person that never keeps their promises and just wants you for your money.
You're only realizing that now???? Blizzard has always been a bad company, which was confirmed when the scandals were publicly announced. Why anyone would still believe and be fans of such a company is beyond my understanding. What happened here is sorta deserved I think for the people that stuck with Blizzard.

AAA gaming in a nutshell
this has proved that the entire point of the sequel was to convert loot boxes and tokens into micro transactions
So sad. The game was already successful but Blizzard decided that giving lootboxes for free every now and then wasn't profitable enough for them. RIP OW1.
I wouldn’t even call them „micro”. A single shitty skin is like 10$
@@janek485 Quite a few of them are rare skins that you used to be able to get in lootboxes from events in OW1 as well, wtf have Blizzard been doing for years on this game?
@@Free.zen. lol it’s not a micro transaction if you can earn them like every single match.

Good to know that even years later, they still hold true to their development process of scrapping promises mid development.
At this point, it's not about the PvE

@@cursedfl4mes645 the definition of an analogy is comparing 2 things that aren’t usually compared. They are just using an analogy in this situation. Relax buddy
Let's be real here, OW 2 was just blizzard being greedy and making up an excuse so the could get that good, good item shop and battlepass money. They couldn't switch over to a paid battlepass in OW 1 because it was pay to play. So they used the 2 remaining braincells to come up with the OW 2 plan, and most importantly... The new forms of monetization. And then they had the audacity to make OW 1 players have to pay for post season 1 content, and not making it possible to go back to earning levels and getting ingame content that way.

@@TypicalTyphon tbh the developers are just doing what they are being Told so it’s not really their fault
@@thegreenpotatYeah mb, I just learnt that it’s not entirely the employee’s fault. It’s REALLY the game directors/executives to ultimately blame for for their horrible jobs at game directing then. It’s so infuriating and frustrating how they said they were working on PVE for the past years, only to then pop a “hard to swallow pill” announcement out of the blue, deciding to not implement the PVE gamemode (which is the only reason why OW2 exists).
It’s really heartbreaking when we’ve all been overhyped with teasers, trailers, demo gameplays, etc. only to be lied to and backstabbed.

Basically.
I think the devs are starting to realize the talent tree and progression can't be as well monetized as, idk say for example taking those talents and skills and putting them into *another* new hero hidden behind the battlepass, and since it's a new hero, they can monetize players for acquiring it *and* those overpriced cosmetics.

what most likely happend was that the pve mode was taking longer than expected and the higher ups started noticing the player dip due to the content drought and cut their losses rather than try to wait it out.

I got Overwatch in 2017 and played with my friends daily, I loved the game, the atmosphere it created, this new feeling it brought. I payed money to get it, I payed money for lootboxes because they made me so excited. The event game modes with little story modes, ect. That game was my absolute favourite game, I still know so much about the characters and their lore. Now it feels so empty, everything that made it what it was is gone. Couldn't they have made an actual second game? I would still be playing the first one. They ruined it and I'm just so upset about it.
