    I just got these but in the 24 pan, and these are by far the best paints I have ever got. The pigment is amazing, and I actually prefer it to winsor and newton’s cotman set. It was really affordable, blend beautifully, and is sooooo much easier for making flat washes.

      It’s driving me nuts that I can’t remember whether I ended up buying the Masters Touch plastic palette set I debated on a couple years ago. I might have it stored somewhere, and shouldn’t buy more, or I might have passed and can consider getting this particular set now. Urg, how do you find mia art supplies?!

  • @Carol-Bell

    I might be wrong, and I haven’t read all the comments yet, but my impression is that Master’s Touch is Hobby Lobby’s “store brand” like Artist’s Loft is for Michaels (and Hobbycraft here in the UK). But I have no idea who makes either brand. Thank you for reviewing them. Maybe I’ll look at them when I go visit home in California.

    • @Candorsmayhem

      Gerrie Louden Bell fine touch is closer to artist loft. Master touch is closer to koi, but it is a trade brand.

    • @ChristopherSobieniak

      @@Candorsmayhem I assume Master's Touch was more like Artist Loft's 2 or 3 grade stuff (since Michaels seems to like having a grading system as well for their products). Fine Touch certainly sounds like Artist's Loft's lower tier supplies like the $5 paint sets. Interesting you compare this to Koi, though I haven't painted with that set yet.

    Hobby Lobby is my go-to store for my art. I haven't purchased any watercolors there, but I do have several Master's Touch brushes and really like them. I have their app on my phone, and get e-mails from them weekly, and they always have a 40% off coupon, plus regular fantastic sales. They have a "house brand" of yarn that is fantastic, too. I have to drive a ways to get there, but usually it's worth it. Some of the staff there know me by name!! (The
    framing department at my nearest store is wonderful, too.)

      I have to admit that I don't like their art supplies anymore. Way back in the 90s, they had Van Gogh and Winsor & Newton watercolor. I was also able to buy cotton pulp watercolor paper there.
      I also have some fairly decent sable watercolor brushes purchased from Hobby Lobby around the same time.
      But now it's all just that Master's Touch stuff, and wood pulp paper. It's all gone more towards the crafting/ hobbyist/ scrapbook end of things.

    I bought this set last week as I'm getting back into watercolor after almost 17 years (didn't want to spend alot right off) and I have to say I really like it for the price. My intention is to use them up and replace the pans with better pans later. So far so good though!

    Bought myself the 24 half pan set today and swatched the colors, I noticed they do give off a smell and have that matte finish when they dry and some colors do have some opacity to them. All in all, it wasn't too bad for $10 and I like the tin they come in, I could use it for other paints!

    These are a good paint to start with (I started with the 24 half pan set 3-4 years ago. I thought they mixed well and were not chalky. I found that they work better if you pre-wet the paints and let them soak 5-10 minutes and then keep them moist while you are still painting. They have good color fastness, I have a color wheel I painted with them 3 years ago and it has not faded (it hangs on my wall over my desk).

    • @bella5875
      @bella5875 11 місяців тому

      I’ve been trying to find info on these paints’ lightfastness but it seems there isn’t anything out there about them. Could you share how you stored your wheel/how much light it was exposed to entirely or in part? Thanks!

    • @bdc20
      @bdc20 11 місяців тому

      @@bella5875unfortunately, they do not make public the lightfastness and pigment information of their pan paints. My color wheel hangs on my wall over my desk where I do my painting (it’s been there since I painted it). It does not get direct sunlight but there is a wall light right next to it. The colors are still very vibrant after 4 years.

    I purchased the 18 color half pan set....I'm really happy with it. Colors are vibrant, fairly easy to activate, good selection of colors, really nice plastic palette box. The paints will get some cracking from getting wet and drying a couple times but never had them come apart in peices yet but I also haven't got down towards the end of a pan yet so....

    I was looking at this in the tube form. I was turned off because some of the colors unnecessarily so were mixed with white. But, I understand this is a cost saving method. I was also surprised because the magenta was an opaque color. This can be good for a travel palette especially for some(like me) who maybe afraid to lose their supplies while on trip. Even though I lost an expensive homemade watercolor book in Manhattan and some returned it to me over a month later.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  6 років тому +1

      I have not tried (or heard good things about) their tube watercolors so I can't say but often the store brands are sources from different factories entirely, like the pans come from factory A bt the tubes come from Factory B and the pencils come from Factory C and so on. That's why I try and see if I can find the same set elsewhere branded differently.

    Hey! If you are still wondering about who makes these paints, I don't know if this helps you, but they are also available on Amazon Germany from a company called Painter Sisters. I compared pictures, colors, the tin, and so on, and these are 99,9% certain the same ones. Price is similar, too, the set of 48 costs 29,99 Euros which is about 36 USD, so pretty much the same. As far as I know Painter Sisters does not make their own products, it's kind of like MozArt and all those new companies that deal in art supplies that they just stick their label on. So I think these watercolors most likely come out of one of those Chinese factories that produce all the arts and crafts kinda products that you can typically find in places like Amazon, companies that mostly produce things for private labeling.

    When I first started to learn watercolor, I got these--a 24 pan set. They didn't mix well. I found them for one thing too grainy (apparently some people like that, I don't), and, as you said, they tend to be muddy. I thought I'd try them again, this summer, thinking maybe I didn't know what I was doing. But nope. I've put them in a drawer and won't be fishing them out again. Like you said, it's alright when you're leaning, but I've graduated to better brands. Thanks for this. The Mungyo paint is a much better quality then Masters Touch. I’d say Mungyo is close to Mission Gold. I picked up the 36 color set of these Masters Touch today. They have a poster paint smell to them. Mine look like cut sticks and there are 2 whites, 2 blacks, 2 ultramarines & 2 yellows which I did not realize when I picked them up. They were vibrant and you can definitely have some fun with them. Thanks for reviewing them, wish they would of had the 48 set. Yeah, I agree about The Mungyo paint. I also have WN cotman 24 color and Mungyo 12 color to test swatches, color chart and illustration . Well, Im not suppose to give my opinion but Mungyo is better with vivid pigment color, beautiful mixing with other pigment plus really reasonable price than Cotman. I swear we are in the same frequency this week! I just got these 1 week ago with a coupon and finished labeling the pans, labeling/adding info to the swatches to get them ready to do the paint swatch and then got busy and have not done any swatching. I was planing on doing this today and then the first thing I see on YT when open it in my studio as I’m getting ready to to just that (the swatches of these) is this video! Now I have to watch it before swatching. 😂. I bought this set out of curiosity because I purchased some Master’s Touch individual tubes just to try them; I bought 6 primaries (warm and cool) and a green. I added some glycerin because I anticipated them not being great and probably cracking. They didn’t crack,but they still come off the well as a whole piece of paint. They felt soapy, like gelatinous, to me. So I really haven’t touched them again. Now I’ll press play again so I can see what you think because I found this all so coincidental that I paused as soon as you showed the box!! 😅
    PS: As I watch I realized I did the same thing, I ran to get the Portable Pinter to see if they fit because they look like the W&N pans and sure enough they did. I also though they maybe made by Meeden because they look so different from the graininess that Mungyo has (and Prima). And my gosh the names on those paints are so out of whack!! I mean, there’s a “Shamrock” that is actually a blue. One thing I hadn’t notice was how much of a grey purple the inside of the tin is. I put even my Meeden one that I bought for M. Graham and Da Vinci and that’s when I realized how much of a difference there was. I put them beside my Schmincke Akademie and they both (Master’s and Meeden) look darker.

    • @joannecarroll5504

    • @tainadelcaribe
      @tainadelcaribe 6 років тому

      Joanne Carroll The tube paint soapy in a regular watercolor-with-fillers way. I’ve added glycerin to a lot of my cheap watercolor paints and they have never felt soapy as I only add 1-2 drops to a full well or pan. They felt the same way some of the Cotman colors feel, like that kind of soapy; not suds soapy, but a little gelatinous in their consistency when water is added.

    Another thing about this set that might be a turn off for some people, these paints all have VERY fine glitter in them. I was sitting down to finally swatch them all to add to my collection and first thought I forgot to rinse my water. I only really looked when I was swatching them to keep in the tin for reference. It is a nice set and the glitter is very very fine. I thought I would put it out there since I know some people might not want that. Awesome review btw! I always check your channel when I wanna look up new palettes out there!

    I don’t like the chalkiness of most watercolors. Is it a price thing (fillers) or is this soemthing certain pigments will always experience? I know certain colors tend to granulate and all, but I hate chalky finish paints. Glossy acrylics are the best, is there such a thing as glossy watercolors?

    I have been buying Daniel Smith but they are so expensive. I needed a few colors and I broke down and bought several tubes of the masters touch. I haven’t used them yet because I just got them today. I was disappointed with the yellow ochre. It is like water. I tried mashing it around in the tube but that didn’t help. I even tried blow drying it. I think it will remain watery I think I have to return that tube and try another one. I will use the masters touch colors and as I run out I’ll replace with DS

    Interesting. Less regarding the set then your process of swatching, colour play and learning techniques. I didn't see all your videos yet, but do you have one going into more details about that? I'm an artist as well, but I'm self taught and still struggle with colour theory (let alone that books tend to chew the subject threw so boringly i can't be bothered reading it half the time). What you showed here though got me interested and made me want to play around as well :)

    Are these worth buying? Because I’ve heard contradictory reviews on the quality of these paints. And are they similar to prima and Jane Davenport (bc I already have those and don’t want to buy smth too similar). I’ve heard that they are very opaque and chalky? Idk, I might buy them anyways just for the tin.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 роки тому +1

      I'd only buy these at 50% off and they do the sale a lot. They don't flow as much as the Prima/JD, they are more like the Meeden colors. They are good for the 50% off price and if you don't care for them it is worth it for the tin and pans I think.

    Do your paints also smell strongly of sharpie marker? Every time I open the tin it smells very strongly. I tried airing it out but the smell persists. I’ve never had watercolors that had an odor before and it was really surprising. I’ve only had that with their metal tin paints. The ones in the white plastic set don’t have the same smell and the paint feel very different. In particular the paints in the plastic sets seem significantly more opaque and chalky. I wish they had pigment information somewhere.
