Mercedes showing off how skinny their car is and Red Bull quietly setting the pace. We need to go through our ‘winners and losers’ of pre-season testing.
And yes, it’s only testing, but there are some great takeaways from the test in the desert - let’s get into it.
So for our first ‘loser’ - Williams. Testing their centre-line cooling, sidepods with holes in and their new driver (they race me so hard - clip). Oh, and do we need to introduce him any more? You know who it is…

I believe there will be the 'Big Four' with Merc, RBR, Ferrari, & McLaren all fighting for podiums at every race. Alonso may not have a top car, but i think he'll be mixing it up and will give us some more Hungary laps. This season has more optimism than last season and may very well be one of the best of all time.

    My wishlist for 2022 season:
-Merc driver rivalry a la 2016.
-Max defending his championship v Lewis (and ideally more drivers, the more the better)
-At least 4 teams competing for the top spot.
-Every team close in the running, with no team scoring less than 20 points.
    -A successful Haas team
Haas is my underdog pick, Mick is my underdog driver pick, Max is my driver championship pick, and McLaren is my constructor championship pick (although realistically it's going to be Merc or RBR).

@@speedbird868 The car had good race pace but the development window with that philosophy is nothing to smile about, the design is kinda standard fair too, much like Alfa. Really with this era of cars, they're designed for low drag high speed, however all teams will have already found ways to dial that in effectively, that's basic strength of this new platform. What you want, is to find a design that nails the low and low medium speeds, that's where the time is. Aston's medium speed is decent, nothing too crazy, their high-speed is good but so is everyone's, their low speed is leaving something to be desired. The teams I suspect, will be winning big here are the Mercedes, McLaren and Williams design shapes, it might take a bit for them to reach their true pace but when they do, it's gonna hurt for everyone else, because their design is really, the one you want for low speed, again, where the real time gains is expected to be made.

Don't forget that during an interview with Sky F1, Christian Horner said Williams looked really strong/surprising with their long run pace. I'd much prefer taking what Christian Horner said as opposed to outsiders who have panicked over a brake fire which had a knock-on effect for the last day. There is every reason to believe that Williams were focussed on things other than performance runs on the last day, considering the lost time resulting from the fire. Prior to the fire everyone thought Williams were solidly in the midfield. Now after one little fire/problem everyone is predicting doom and gloom for Williams. I strongly suspect negative bias in this analysis, informed by where Williams have placed in the WCC over the past few seasons.
Perhaps Williams have an upgrade package in the works for the race weekend? (They've said that development is the goal/key this season). I can't see the point in doing performance runs in testing if you know you have a better package coming. It'd be a much better use of time evaluating other areas (such as tires, reliability etc...) and gaining a solid foundation as opposed to doing performance runs on a package that you know won't be running during the race weekend.

I would really love for people to actually say WHY they think Alfa-Romeo will be at the back. Not just "Oh yeah, Alfa is also there". The car looks quick, Bottas did a stunning lap on the C3s. They had some reliability issues, but nothing that couldn't be fixed (and others had more reliability issues, cook me some steaks on those McLaren breaks). They did more laps than McLaren, Red Bull, Aston Martin, Haas, Alpine and Williams, plus they are the only team at the weight-limit.

I think Alfa is a bit limited at developing the car as they can’t really shed any weight over the season like the very overweight cars, especially Red Bull, and gain some cheap tenths without any great innovation. 10 kg of weight transfers to roughly 3 tenths of lap time, and by the summer break all the cars will be somewhat close to the minimum weight of presumably 798kg. Alfa can’t really improve anymore on that aspect. Think they’ll be strong at the start (5-6th fastest car) and then tumble down the order as the season progresses and cars are being further developed

The problem with Mercedes is their "pyramid concept" or "zero size sidepods". Red Bull cleaned up that whole area above the venturi tunnels and uses it as a wing what produces massive stability. Mercedes placed some kind of pyramid on it and uses the crashstructure as an extra wing, although it's way up and not that effective. Ferrari uses the same kind of philosophy with their bathtub but further back, resulting on more force on the rears. (Keep an extra eye on their rear tyres, overheating could come in play.)

But the teams will eventually shed weight, losing 10 kg means about 3 tenths of lap time, so many of the teams that are already matching Alfa Romeo have more potential in their car, as they can gradually over the season decrease weight step by step and gain lap time without much innovation, whereas the Sauber is a bit limited in that area as it’s already maxed out in the weight department. I predict Alfa to be good at the start of the season and then gradually fall back towards the end of the grid as the season progresses
