That herb is Limnophila aromatica. The common name is "rice paddy herb". It has several different names in Thai: "ga-orm" (กะออม), pak ga-yang (ผักกะแยง), "pak ka-yang" (ผักแขยง), to name a few. My favorite is "pak leum phua" (ผักลืมผัว), which means "forget husband plant". 🤣 There's a folktale behind the name. A husband went to work in the fields. The wife came across this plant and found it to be tasty. It went so well together with the food she prepared that she ended up eating everything. When the husband returned from the fields he found there was no food left for him.

I have lived in the US for 43 years already and I never took off my shoes when I am in my house or go to people's houses. In Laos you have to because they don't have many cleaned and painted roads, so you will always have your shoes dirty when you start walking.
