Love the comparison with Montgomery Clift. It is highly significant that Cazale used the same 'looking down, looking away" approach, that Clift was known for. It is his portrayal of guilt that makes his otherwise detestable characters, a lot more real, complex and engaged with the viewer. Meryl Streep said once that she learnt everything from Cazale, about acting and life.
