Someone probably commented on this... When finishing the FG Knot, after trimming the mono leader, use the braid tag end to half hitch - braid on braid, for 3 or 4 half hitches. This will help the mono tag end go thru the guides on the cast. It adds a little bulk for the transition to the mono tag end.
FG knot was my go to for a long time but I've somehow turned from a knot fanatic to someone who rarely ties knots. Using hollow core has become my way of life when it comes to braid to mono or flouro. Being able to make wind on leaders before my trips gives me great variability with loop to loop connections. I have full spools of hollow on my big game reels but on my smaller reels and spinning I will just splice a section of hollow core onto my mainline. It's really a simple way of feeling confident in your connections.
A really nice and clear explanation and demonstration of the knot. Almost feel I can tie the knot after only one viewing. Thanks for all the videos. Really interesting to see how different the fishing is from out here in California.
Late to the FG party and have been practicing the method in your video and the finger pinch one. Your video perfectly demonstrates how to pull the mono away from the braid to make nice tight coils. Excellent job and thank you for your work. Pretty sure it’s time to get some merch.
Dang man your the only person who's ever replied to me when I've made a comment about a video! It means a lot I appreciate that. I grew up in Ft Lauderdale and I live in TN's now so I watch your videos almost everyday. The fishing here sucks! Thanks for your reply and keep up the good fishing videos
Thanks for commenting and I try to reply to all the comments, sometimes I'll miss a few but if my audience takes the time to comment I can take the time to reply!
Fishing With Ryan wait, the fishing in fort Lauderdale sucks? I've never been there but I'm going soon. If you will, reply on what to do there, fishing wise. Thank you
We started our channel a little while back when we moved from the west coast of Florida. I feel your pain though bro because, there were many years I was landlocked when I was stationed overseas with the military and could not fish. Now we try to get out as often as possible and put the vids on our channel. Check us out if you have a minute. FLORIDA FISHING COUPLE
Victor I enjoy all your videos!! Especially the filleting & cooking techniques. I have been fishing since I was 10 yrs old & had a tackle shop called Hillsboro Rod &Reel in Pompano Beach from 1988 to 1994. Kept logs of all my adventures and memories in photo albums. Caught a 98 lb. Tarpon during a September mullet run I believe it was 1985 from Boca Raton surf fishing near Palmetto Pk. Road. I'm 68 now back in NY and miss the fishing and recently had both hips replaced - I guess my jetty fishing career here on Long Island is just a memory now!! Back to the tarpon caught I had a blood knot mono to mono that went way out with that fish took 40 minutes to bring in!! I have tied Albright's wire to mono here in Florida and mono to braid fluke for fishing on Long Island, New York. Never heard of an FG knot until I saw your video tonight. Very interesting and very practical for a snag proof knot. Thanks for this chance to say hello and for your excellent you tube adventures with you& Brook!! Hope I spelled her name right.
Landshark Fishing This is the best video I have found on how to tie the FG knot! I just found your channel (and subscribed) and have watched almost all your tackle Tuesday videos. You are the man keep up the good work and great content!
Great video. You have the 'instructor' manner down. I've used mono and spinning rigs all my adult life, but we bought a house where the seller left an assortment of baitcasters so I need to get reacquainted with braid. This knot will be invaluable. Thanks and good luck.
I have watched all of your videos at least 3 times each... been subbed for a long time now... watched all of your tackle Tuesday’s except for this one because I feel I didn’t need to learn to tie the FG knot then I can’t not tie it thanks to you I have learned so fast to tie it the first time I had tried. On that note thank you victor, for this video and thank you, brook for recording victor and making this vid possible. You guys rock! Tight lines! 🎣🐟👊🏾
Once you learn to tie this FG knot, you will use it very often. Anytime I know the knot will be in and out of my guides I tie an FG knot. Its not the knot for every single mono to braid connection situation in my opinion, but if I know that knot will be going through my guides I tie an FG knot. Closing an FG is preference I think, everybody has their own method of half hitches and such. Key is, as you said, pull as hard as possible on both mono and braid before cutting the tags. The only time an FG knot can fail is if it's not cinched tightly enough and the wraps slip. Since you usually cut the tags flush on this knot any slipping can cause failure. If your a shade nervous, leave a couple millimeters of mono tag. Great video!
good idea using heavier mono and that larger dark line as braid end. I see so many "How To" tie a knot that use the actual line and you just don't get a good look at how to tie it. Great work. Thanks
Yep and I hate when they teach you to tie a knot and don't explain what the knot is useful for in the first place lol. Thats why this channel is striving to deliver the best content possible. Thanks for watching as always!
I sure appreciate how you took your time and explained everything. very nicely done I am trying to learn this not. it appears to be very easy to do. you just explain every facet thank you
What up man I love you're videos bro and have been following Land Shark for a little while now. Is there any possible way you could explain a little more about a top shot; how, when and why to use?
Great video very informative. New angler here. Thanks for going into all the details in all your video's. Though I would really appreciate knowing what lures you are using and how to hook up live bait. Keep up the great work.
Man that was a pain to tie for the first time.......wife had to help me and I'm still not sure if it was done right or knot...haha see what I did there, thanks for the video as I'll eventually get it!
one time my Barrett rod tip snapped but the knot was fine but i use a dot of super glue on the half hitch and that's worked for me for like 6-7 years of grouper fishing
No, it's just used as a knot for any braid to mono/fluoro connection. Albright's work, but I have had many Albrights fail and break before. I have yet to have an FG connection slip or break on me. If I break off it is either somewhere up the main line, leader or at the hook, but never at the FG. I highly recommend switching over to FG and see how you like it.
Landshark fishing, I have a few questions of my own. I have always used spinners in the 6000-8000 range for big snook at inlets and some bridges. I'm thinking of getting a baitcaster. Is a baitcaster practical? Can I use larger live baits with a baitcaster? What size should I go with? I was looking at the Daiwa Lexa 300 or 400. How long does it take to get the hang of a baitcaster? Thanks!
A baitcaster will work for live bait and artificial and is the go to for artificial. I can't think of any drawbacks to a bait caster as far as big live baits, other than drag capacity. Bait casters are not know for heavy drag, but the LEXA is a good option as it boasts 25lbs of drag, which is more than enough. The only other downside to bait casters is line capacity is not the greatest, but in your case bridge fishing for snook, this is not an issue. Lexa is a great reel, from what I hear and have several friends who fish them. The only other thing I might add, is a reel like a BAJA or 4/0 senator will most likely last longer in saltwater and through physical abuse. I see no problem with fishing a LEXA, in fact it would be pretty cool as you could fish artificial on it as well as live bait all in one reel vs a standard conventional.
Thanks for your reply. I subscribed to your channel. IMO better than Blacktiph and you actually take the time to answer questions from viewers. I'm not familiar with standard conventionals. Are you saying you could only fish live bait on one? I'm probably going to pair whatever I get withan 8'6" Extra Heavy Dobyns Champion XP rod. That's a $300 rod, so I'll have to stay under $200 on the reel. Any recommendations at that price point? They do have a LEXA that has a retrieve of about 28" inches per crank. Would that work? Also, I heard Ben Begovic say in one of your videos that low gear ratios offer more power than higher gear ratios. How is that? Isn't a reel that retrieves more line per crank going to beat a fish quicker? Again, thanks for your help.
With a conventional reel such as a penn 4/0 or Avet MXL it is unpractical to fish lures for several reasons. One being that they do not contain levelwinds and another they are not low profile reels and would be difficult to cast, and are heavy. With a bait caster you are able to eliminate all of those problems, but you generally suffer in the are of smaller spools, leading to decrease line capacity, so such applications as chasing big tarpon off the beach make a bait caster less advantageous as opposed to a conventional or spinner. Bait casters also tend to boast less drag, but not in the case of the REVO or LEXA. As far as gear ratios are concerned, Gear ratios aren't everything either when it comes to how fast you can reel in as you also have to take into account the IPT or inches per turn based on that specific spool and reel. Lower gear ratios provided more torque and require less force to do the same amount of work, than a high gear ratio reel would, but they suffer in terms of output velocity or how fast something can be reeled in. Your making me go back to physics lol Read this to understand a little more. www.bassfishingandcatching.com/fishing-reel-gear-ratio.html
GBOI ok I'm not trying to sound like an idiot but this is gonna make look like one mono and fluro at least what I've seen catch the same amount of fish and looks the exact same the only good reason for that is to tie heavier line on
I know it will work, but what lb braid to what lb mono are you thinking? Also a big thing is making sure you have wide spaced rings on your guides and preferably a roller tip, to avoid any possible chance of your FG connection getting caught. As far as strength I wouldn't worry about it slipping one bit.
that will work perfect. Have a buddy help you keep as much tension in the braid as possible, when you are doing the wraps, to be on the safe side do 30 wraps, and 7 half hitches.
Great video by the way. I have just started using the FG knot and have a couple questions. 1) how often do you retie the knot when using it? Am worried about it getting weak after repeatedly going through the guides. 2) I seem to have it down when using braid that is at least 30# and flouro that is 40# plus. My problem is tying it with my flats rigs using 10# braid to 20# flouro. I have had it fail multipul times. Do I have to do something different? Like more wraps or more half hitches? Thanks
20-25 wraps and 5-7 half hitches for me. Heres the most important thing!!! Before you cut your tag end of your braid and your flouro, do this!!!. Take your hook and hook it to something whether it be a cleat or rod holder. now i like to put as much tension in the line as possible, which makes your FG connection synch down and now you can cut your tag ends.
Ron Whetstone when you use smaller diameter you have to use more wraps. For 10lbs to 30lb+ I use about 25 to 30 wraps. When I first tried the FG, it failed too. There are a few things you have to make sure you do when you tie the FG. 1. Make sure the leader is straight under the wraps. 2. After you make the half hitches pull the two main lines tight. This pulls out the small slip that does occurs. 3. You need more than 2 half hitches if you don't tie a cinch knot at the end. Half hitches come undone eventually. I have fished a whole summer with one FG knot. Recently I have swapped over to the Alberto knot because it's easier and faster to tie when I'm out on the water but if I'm prepping before I get out FG knot all the way.
I do a Aussie braid knot, I actually make a modified version which I call a gator braid knot, to make a double line then a double line FG to mono.....never loose anything.......
Flounder.. No I live in Tennessee now and the fishing sucks here Ft lauderdale the fishihg is Awesome! You can fish in any body of water down there and expect to catch something.
Someone probably commented on this... When finishing the FG Knot, after trimming the mono leader, use the braid tag end to half hitch - braid on braid, for 3 or 4 half hitches. This will help the mono tag end go thru the guides on the cast. It adds a little bulk for the transition to the mono tag end.
it also protects braid from being cut by the mono's sharp edge left after cutting/clipping it.
FG knot was my go to for a long time but I've somehow turned from a knot fanatic to someone who rarely ties knots. First time tying the fg knot got it done thanks to your video. Best video on how to do it.
Looking forward to these videos. I've used this knot for a while now and it hasn't failed me. Best braid to leader knot out there. Keep it up man!
Not only is it the strongest, but it allows you to do so much more than a bulky connection.

Is my favorite knot and has several ways to do it 100% recommended
This is a good idea, same idea as an Albright but I’ve had problems with Albright’s slipping. So it’s definitely a better mechanism!

Awesome knot, glad you have a series now!
Thanks for watching !! Looks like the feedback is pretty positive for the series!
Nice vid. I just used it to tie my first leader on with an FG! Now I’m all set to fish!
You helped me alot I've been catching more snook lately thanks man

dude keep doing what your doing your a true fisherman.!
Thank you, really appreciate comments like this!
A little time consuming to use on the water for a quick connection, but for prepping i will definitely try it. Nice work on the tutorial
Just tied my first FG knot using your video!! Love the videos and I can't wait to try out your shark rigs and ideas next time I go to the beach!

No problemo
bring these back.....
I use an Albright knot for my braid to mono connections
This is exactly what I was looking for thank you
great channel and great video! your channel has taught me a lot and i really appreciate that. keep up the great work!
Hey I appreciate you watching, so thank you!
Superb superb superb explaination. Thank you so much....👍👍👍👌
Best knot ever...thanks for the tips😎👍🏻
I'm switching from unie to unie knot to this knot thanks nice video

Love this knot
You both are great! New angler here
Thank you and welcome aboard
Hey, I actually learned something from a YT fishing video for a change. Good info!
Yes I would like to see more knots
Thank you for using large mono and cord for the demo.
Nice video, I have never heard of the FG knot before and am getting into shark fishing and will be using it for sure!!!
Best braid to mono connection out there!
Man that was a pain to tie for the first time.......wife had to help me and I'm still not sure if it was done right or knot...haha see what I did there, thanks for the video as I'll eventually get it!
It took me a lot of practice to get it down lol. Once you do master it it becomes second nature, as with any knot.
This is what I needed, Thanks!!
Tried the FG with braid to flouro and flouro leader slipped out even after half hitches. Am I doing something wrong?
Really great idea.
Yo that keyboard with the volume knob, a classic.
Amazing video excited for more of them
Thank you Daniel
or type in" fg knot ifish" ,with paul, he has his own fishing show on tv ,its a bit easier to do and locks it off better at the end :)
Made an intimidating knot easy to tie. I was shocked how little there is to it.
Just spooled up a new reel, F up a few times but finally got. 👊
thanks. will Deffinatly have to practice that one.
Can you please do a tackle Tuesday on the waxwings jig
Thanks well done.
Can the fg knot go through roller guides? Was planning to connect 180lb braid to 100lb mono on my shark set up
Maybe a silly question, but can this knot be used to tie fluorocarbon to mono? Or does it just work with braid?
one time my Barrett rod tip snapped but the knot was fine but i use a dot of super glue on the half hitch and that's worked for me for like 6-7 years of grouper fishing
Snapped bc of the FG?
Landshark Fishing no a huge goliath grouper took my fish then it snapped my crimp came undone and my. top shot tied with a FG stayed together
thanks this helped so much
Nice vid and would like to see comparison to the GT knot
Never tried that one
Gt knot should be ur next vid
Does the mono or fluro line have to be larger than the braid? I have not been able to get this knot to hold.
this knot is the truth!
Excellent vid!! Is that a Saragossa?? I was thinking about buying one. Your thoughts.
Have you ever tried to burn the mono end
very nice tutorial
Thank you for watching
Nice Video. I’ll be practicing the FG knot. By the way what kind of spinning rods are paired with your Daiwa BGs?
is the FG knot more for off shore fishing than inshore fishing? I use the Albright knot for my top water and plastic....
What rod are you using in the demonstration? Thanks.
can I use the FG knot connecting mono leader to mono main line in salt water fishing?
I need a mono leader to mono main line knot, any suggestions?
Great vid much appreciated
Could I use this on my baitcaster
use the rizzuto finish fg knot...it's much more stronger than the hitches end

Landshark fishing,
I have a few questions of my own. I have always used spinners in the 6000-8000 range for big snook at inlets and some bridges. I'm thinking of getting a baitcaster. Is a baitcaster practical? Oh another thing I forgot to add, is the LEXA only comes in higher gear ratios, which is not ideal for torque and pulling power.
Hi I like to burn off the braided tag end. It reduces the chances of your knot being undone
Can you use mono to mono on fg knot
Will this work mono to fluro?
No, this knot is meant for braid to mono or braid to flouro
GBOI ok I'm not trying to sound like an idiot but this is gonna make look like one mono and fluro at least what I've seen catch the same amount of fish and looks the exact same the only good reason for that is to tie heavier line on
Yo I'm having a hard time trying this FG not do you have any other tips that I can use on tying the knot
Nice vid. What do you think about this knot as a quick replacement for a whined on leader?
I know it will work, but what lb braid to what lb mono are you thinking? Also a big thing is making sure you have wide spaced rings on your guides and preferably a roller tip, to avoid any possible chance of your FG connection getting caught. As far as strength I wouldn't worry about it slipping one bit.
we run 100 # braid and 150 # mono

Wil this knot work on fluorocarbon line?
Yes, Fluoro or mono. The deciding factor is having braid as your main line.
I use to use the Albright or a uni to uni, now I only use the FG. BTW, what does the FG stand for? Thanks guys!
