My brother saved quite a few people during this storm in McClellanville, SC. Lincoln High School. God Rest his soul he was gone 2 years later.
I was 5 1/2 yrs old when this was.I was sitting on my bed scared&when i looked up my roof was gone.I was just my mom,sister&me there was my dad was away on the navy ship

I was 6 years old and remember this vividly. I remember the night before watching News 4 and Live 5 News while the wind was picking up outside and we were packing to leave. We didn’t have money for plywood, so my parents used duct tape and taped an “X” across each window of the house. We lived on the water in James Island on Sol Legare. We had big hefty bags and stuffed them with all the important clothes, in case we lost everything. We jumped in the car, and my dad parked his car at my aunts house, where there weren’t many trees - we hit the road to Greenville, SC.
After the storm, Omg it was horrible. No power for weeks… all the stores had food drives in front. Houses damaged badly all over. I remember seeing buildings all blown over… visiting Charleston today, those businesses were replaced as though nothing ever happened.
I can still remember the music in the radio that we listened to every night with now power - the humidity was insane, and we all piled in one room, because we were afraid that snakes may have found their way into the house. The music, when I hear them today, still brings back memories of that time. I can still taste the powdered milk, and til this day, I can’t eat Froot Loops because I can still taste them with that hot, nasty powdered milk.
My dad was able to borrow a generator from work - he worked at a mental health facility as a counselor. The generator was enough to the on a small lamp in the kitchen and some fans in the living room, kitchen, front of hallway, and the bedroom we stayed in; the fans did little to help. 4 kids, 2 parents and a dog piled in one small bedroom, all sweating.
I remember at church, they had tents up and was serving spaghetti and had groceries for members of the congregation with the necessities. Being 6 years old, spaghetti that didn’t have “O’s” at the end was gross to me.
National guardsmen where helping to ration out goods.
One thing that brings tears to my eyes til this day: EVERYONE WAS GETTING FOOD STAMPS AS THE LOCAL CURRENCY.
Seeing a line of people of all races, I remember, hugging each other, helping each either, talking as though they were all family (if anyone knows Charleston, they will know that we are family there - before they northerners moved in and turned it into a hipster town 😒).
It’s all so vivid, but even though it was such a bad time, videos like this bring back a weirdly euphoric feeling. The simplicity of life; how things slowed down. Every house dark and the area filled with the echos of generators. Only headlights we saw were from armored vehicles, because there was a curfew in effect before nightfall. The memories are so peaceful to me… but at the same time sad. Watching the video of these old people in the photos, all dead now. Seeing my favorite Governor of all time, Carrol Campbell (God rest his soul), the bridge turned, boats ashore, streets littered with debris- everyone was driving 5 miles per hour so as to not blow their tires, all biting our nails nervous to see if our house made it or not. Even through 26 foot storm surge living surrounded by water, all we had is a 12” piece of broken glass in the living room. There was an old, ugly tree in the front yard that was the strongest thing I’ve ever seen… lasted until the day we sold the house in 2004, and the new people cut it down. The only thing that killed that tree was humans.
Long post, sorry, but I’m covered in goosebumps thinking about it. God bless the people who lost their lives, homes, livelihoods; all the old people who survived, but no longer with us ❤️ my grandfather died of colon cancer 3 months after Hugo.

Oh my goodness yes, the humidity. We were without power for 2 weeks so I know how bad it was. I also agree that we all felt like family and helped each other. We didn’t have a racism problem back then. Even though total devastation, we were all in it together.

I Was Living In Johns Island At The Time I Kept Repeating This Bible Verse We Had Minor Roof Damaged But Me And My Family Were Bless that Bible Verse Got Me Through It
I was 12 years old when Hugo hit...me, my mother, father, and sister were huddled together in the hallway...my older brother was stationed at Ft Bragg at the time... I actually sleep through Hugo..surprisingly...I was calm...I remember to this day...the sounds of the wind...the tornados...sounding like a freight train..I’ll never forget that sound...my mother said she felt the force of that wind..trying to pull up roof in our den...we came through all right

I am a Californian... unaccustomed to Hurricanes. I served in the US Army in the 80's. While stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah GA... I was introduced to Hurricane Hugo. My Lord...what devastation! We helped with the supply effort bringing food and water. I will never forget the devastation of Hurricane Hugo... NEVER😥

I was in the US Navy during "Hurricane 🌀 Hugo" Charleston SC. What a mess that storm left.
Hugo was no joke. I was a kid here in South Carolina and I remember it.
I can remember as a kid seeing flying squirrels often. After Hugo, I’ve never seen one since.
I think everything was tired of flying after this storm.
I lost everything I owned in this storm. I was a 20 year old newly wed. My husband was in the Navy.
I can still remember being outside as Hugo's eye went over.
I lived in Folly Beach at that time. Drove home to Tennessee with my family on the 20th and was back on the 21st. Complete destruction. The only good thing that came out of Hugo was my daughter.

I was six living in Greenville, South Carolina and it did damage here and scared the hell out of me! Since then I be on alert with bad weather
I was living in Anderson County at the time in a town of Pelzer and the only school district went in 2 hrs late was Anderson District 1. I was a freshman I'm high school that year. Now I remember some parents were keeping their children home from school cause they through it was a bad call. Plus a few years later moving to Tucson and taking a college classes in fall semester of 93 meeting a mother and daughter going to the same college and we were taking a writing class and one day while we were eating lunch we started talking about were we lived and found out that they also lived in SC the same time and her dad was station I believe the name of the air base was name Shaw Air Force Base and we were telling stories

I was in Hurricane Hugo back in 1989. I was living in Myrtle Beach at the time, which was to suffer horrible winds and storm surge as it was north of the landfall point. Very late in the evacuation period I drove to near Columbia and found a safe place to hunker down. The thing I remember most was that there are lots of way to die in a hurricane. My place in Myrtle Beach survived, but it was inhabitable because there no was no electric and no water. Trees and wires were down everywhere. Propane tanks had exploded nearby. I was able to get into my place and retrieved as much as possible, and then moved inland for a month.

I was 23 at the time . I slept on the floor in my parent’s bedroom. I remember thinking we are all going to diE. I now compare all hurricanes to Hugo . I’ll never forget it . The wind really does sound like train .
My Grandmother kept dreaming seeing the ocean right under her beach house and a massive storm at night, she was at her beach house in Garden City, she warned every one to leave 4 days before it struck. My Grandparents went back to Raleigh, most of the people she had begged to leave just thought she was crazy, several told her so. She could predict things before they happened. Many lives were lost.

I was only 4 it was my sisters 1st birthday September 21st 1989. I dont remember it. But ive grown up with the stories and warnings of what can happen to our towns.
The name Humberto was the name that replaced Hugo back in 1989. Whenever all the names from the 1989 season was used again for the 1995 season the name Hugo was replaced with that name. but if it never was retired the name Hugo would have been represented even in 2019 because the names for the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season where the exact name that starting in 1983. Used again in 1989,1995,2001,2007,2013,and for the 30th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo for the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season. So if the name Hugo was not retired in 1989 it would have been used for all those years that it had and every year including this year
My Grandma wanted to go to her home in the middle of Hugo i was 8 years old i remember the glass breaking in the house and went out to take grandma home and we got to the interstate and there was light poles and light lines all over the place i never seen 95 that dead since i been alive
I remember my grandma’s huge tree fell right on top of her single wide mobile home and literally less than a foot from her roof top and she used to call that gods hand saying no.
Was on the SCHP then stationed in Horry County and remember that night very well! Wound up having to go to Charleston days later to assist those in need days later. Destruction was unlike anything I had ever seen!

I was 10 when Hurricane Hugo hit. We live near Myrtle Beach in a brick house and I can remember hearing our house popping. We were without power for 2 weeks. Mama and daddy didn’t sleep at all. They made me and my brother sleep in the floor in their bedroom. I didn’t sleep much. I could tell my mama was concerned so I was feeding off of that. We’ve been fairly lucky. I’m just waiting for the next “Hugo” to come our way.

Well I believe Hugo was so powerful that it churned its way to South Carolina like a bowling ball and strike . It was on a calishen path with the south east mainland and these people that track them are incredible 👌 like on any wether .

6:55 Maybe some of those trucks helped out, but I remember a truck full of chainsaws in James Island charging TOP dollar for one. You can argue whether price gouging for saws is fair or not... I just remember being glad I bough one in Atlanta before returning to Charleston
