The mix is bad, I hate when engineers do this to bands
this is quite unfair to the sound guy. As you can see for the video take theres a lot of display, several cameras, editing, etc for video, but when it comes to an audiovisual production sound its more often than not mistreated. A lot of bands can't afford having their own sound personnel as it should and normally the priorities are: Backliners, monitor sound, PA sound. Thats because bands put in priority the people helping them feel confortable inside the stage than a good sound outside, whats is reasonable because they need to deliver a good performance no matter what.
I don't know the circumstances of this production but my guess is the board used for the PA has not enough buses to record every channel individually in an outside system and mixed afterwards and what we're hearing is the mix from the desk, that can explain why the voice is so loud in relation with guitars, because those amps cranked up in a not so big venue need just a reinforcement for the crowd.
Anyways, we assume deafheaven are well put in a fancy label with former employees from Atlantic records but music has never been in a worst position financialwise than now and a lot of money is spend in social shitmedia, create an image, data research...instead of a good sound, thats partially because thanks to digital technology sound engineering has never been that easy as now, but for this very same reason sound engineering has never been as mistreated as now. A band with such dense complex sound should be touring with 3 tech guys just for sound but i bet they carry 2 tops and even one of them is also making road managing duties aswell...
A lot of guessing from my part but after years working as sound engineer i've seen tons of shit regarding how mistreated sound is and most of my former peers works as dogs, 16 plus hours shifts, poor sleep, bad meals... Its a hard job
