I must be one of the few who actually like the video. Everything doesn't have to be polished and thoroughly edited for me to like it. You put the word on why I like it - psychedelic, and I think it builds well under the theme of the lyrics, not as influenced by drugs, but influenced by the madness of the actions and the despair that is described. At the same time, we get to see the band in action, and even though this is not a proper concert, but the audience is invited to be part of the video, it shows the band in action. Morten's flirting with the camera, Magne being himself, Pål's silent presence, and his expression 25 seconds before the music is held back before it explodes again... I not only love the song, the video gives it an extra dimension for me.
I agree with you Kari and your analysis is spot on. Like Shell says it’s nice to see you back..we’ve missed your valuable comments and local Norwegian knowledge for a week or two now.

As you may know, Norway has chosen a special artist/song this year (Gåte/Ulveham), and I LOVE it, so I'm excited to see how Europe receives the song. Hi Matt and good morning…this is a nice treat for my Sunday a.m.! First let me say this is the official video for the single but a departure from their normal type, instead using a compilation of live film from them performing on tour. The reason for that is because they were on tour overseas pretty constantly at the time the single was released and had no time to make a tailor-made studio video. I think much of it was recorded and filmed in California on the USA leg of their 1986/87 tour…but I’m sure Sofia or Sylvie will correct me on that if I’m incorrect. I love the song..and as you already mentioned it’s up there at the top or near top of most true a-ha fans list of songs. It’s jaunty, bouncy and rocky beat is in direct contrast to the darkness of the lyrics, as is so typical of a-ha songs. You say that you missed the true meaning of the lyrics when you first listened and that would apply to most of us I’d guess… but on repeated listens it’s true meaning becomes only too clear…something pretty final and grisly has happened, as we realise the true meaning of the ominous words “putting the gun down on the bedside table I must’ve realised” …..great songwriting and lyrics from Pal and really impressive vocal interpretation and expression of the words by Morten..a truly great track on this second album. A great 1-2-3 start to Scoundrel Days, following as it does the title track and the elegant and jazzy Swing Of Things, making this album one of their best. Thank you for your review of the video, it’s some time now since you first covered this track on your thorough aural deep dive into the chronological output of the band, a journey many of us have really enjoyed accompanying you on! 💕

I guess this video is not on the official channel because they are not proud of it. 😜 Instead, they have the 1991 NRK studios version of the video and song, and you can't blame them... 😉 You will get to that one too, in time. But this is the video I vaguely remember seeing at the time. Like Marjorie said, they were on tour and had no time to make a proper video, so this one stands out from the rest - in a negative way, surely, but at the same time it brought something new: images of them as a live band. And yes, it was filmed in California, Los Angeles (maybe not the whole footage, though?), in August 1986. It was directed by Knut Bry, the photographer who took the pictures for the Scoundrel Days album cover in the beginning of the same month, in Hawaii, when they played there. (Coincidentally, the cover of Under by Savoy shows a picture of the same place, taken by Paul last year while on holiday.) The song will forever be a very special one for me, because it was this one that made me a fan. And, of course, it is one of my top favourites by a-ha. It took me years and years before the lyrics began to dawn on me, though. 😁 Next comes Cry Wolf, which I haven't found on their official channel either! 😳 And the reason for that absence I am totally unable to guess... 🤷♀

You're not the only one cool with the video, and I have left a comment where I argue why I actually like it. I actually like the video for Cry Wolf, too, and also the song. It's adolescence, and I think it's a bit silly that the band doesn't acknowledge its entire past. No one expects anything made in the 80s to slide right through today's critical audience (although some obviously do just that. Maybe they're spoiled?). Cry wolf live is also a bit like Touchy! - when they rock it up I think it's wonderful!

They have some great stuff then. They were absolutely amazing then and I can see that and appreciate it. I don't think the 80's stuff is bad or anything. I just tend to like the other stuff more for it’s more my style. Again though, I think they are so amazing to have been able to do so many different styles to reach so many different people. ❤ I did make a little joke that maybe they think it's "Meh", but I just was kinda meaning that maybe they get tired of playing the older stuff. I did hear some stuff where they said they wouldn't mind playing other stuff from their catalog, stuff that isn't as popular. Just on the video, It's quite different from the usual creative dose in the arm we get from a-ha. That said, it is typical of a lot of music videos of the time (but the 80s did have some amazingly creative videos... not saying they're good but they are creative). I don't mind it at all, I'd put it on tp hear the song but not to watch as a music video. I know they were touring at the time so i guess it was to show that they were out on the road. The least interesting video for me but it's still a-ha so still good... just not great.

It’s about their talent here. Okay, a TINY bit about looks, but it’s mostly their talent. The shots of Pål all serious on the guitar? 🥰Magne well, jumping around (not as serious, but cute) and also getting some serious time on the keyboard?🥰Morten not playing with his hair or tossing it every five seconds, him wearing regular clothes,even a jacket, it being about him singing and looking cool? 🥰 I love it. I think we've been spoiled by the creative direction of most of their videos. This is still a fine video but the others are more creative or at least better made (I'm looking at you I Call Your Name video).

I must have heard this song a thousand times but never paid mind to the lyrics, I'm always in the groove. Even after you mentioned it just now I still failed to hear the lyrics, the groove just sweeps me away. Not a fan of this video, like many "concert footage" videos, it just seems lazy 😎
Not lazy in this case…just no time to make a proper video because they had been touring for some time when the single was released by the record company. The footage was from that tour.

I hear what you're saying but if memory serves the single was released Autumn 86 the world tour started in the June 86 and it went thru until the late August 87 (I'm not 100% on the months I maybe a month off each end). I figure they used what they could get, Cry Wolf is a proper video up that should be up next

I must have heard this song a thousand times but never paid mind to the lyrics, I'm always in the groove. Even after you mentioned it just now I still failed to hear the lyrics, the groove just sweeps me away. Not a fan of this video, like many "concert footage" videos, it just seems lazy 😎
Not lazy in this case…just no time to make a proper video because they had been touring for some time when the single was released by the record company. The footage was from that tour.
Wow, I am just extremely happy that all three get equal camera time, it’s more about their talent, and it’s not all about Morten and his looks. I am easily pleased, apparently.😂

I hear what you're saying but if memory serves the single was released Autumn 86 the world tour started in the June 86 and it went thru until the late August 87 (I'm not 100% on the months I maybe a month off each end). I figure they used what they could get, Cry Wolf is a proper video up that should be up next
