The 1970s AM and FM radio airwaves were filled with a lot of great music presented by very talented musicians and artists who refused to be pigeonholed......we were spoiled and Blessed.
Musicianship at it's finest! Fagan and Beckett, along with the industry's Beth session and recording artists of the time! A masterclass in writing, production, technique, composition and execution but you can't teach soul! Such joyful noise!
As amazing as this song is, (in fact, you can't find a bad song on this album "Aja") the one you want to listen to is called Black Cow. Steely Dan is pure gold!
One of my favorite albums from Steely Dan. Black Cow is awesome and my fav is Deacon Blues. Both on this album. Thank you for bringing me back to my youthful days.
This song is relaxing until Wayne Shorter and Steve Gadd comes in on sax & drums and just tear the roof off. This whole album is one of the most superbly engineered albums EVER. Steely Dan is my favorite band. They literally make no bad music.
This is one of the best analog audio recordings ever made. The musicians were chosen for specific songs. Steve Gadd is ridiculous on drums. One of my faves. The part where he taps his sticks together at the end of the first drum break and where he goes to the ride cymbal at the end always give me stink face. Gets me every time.
Donald Fagen - lead vocals, synthesizer, police whistle Steve Gadd - drums Victor Feldman - percussion, vibraphone Chuck Rainey - bass guitar Walter Becker, Denny Dias and Larry Carlton - guitars Michael Omartian - piano Joe Sample - electric piano Wayne Shorter - tenor saxophone Timothy B. Schmit - backing vocals
On this album, they brought in many musicians for different parts. Of course, these guys could get whomever they want, eh? You do have the core. Good info!
The amazing thing about this song is that you can't tell where it's going as far as music progression. It's all over the place, and sometimes feels like completely different songs that were grafted together. It's very complex, but it WORKS! As appreciated as Steely Dan has become over the years, they are STILL underrated.
Oh...thank you so much! Steely Dan were/are one of the very best bands back in the day. Lush beyond words. Now try exploring some of their other work. You really won’t be disappointed. This takes me back to Sunday afternoon gatherings with friends. Glorious! Happy New Year everyone!
The 1970s AM and FM radio airwaves were filled with a lot of great music presented by very talented musicians and artists who refused to be pigeonholed......we were spoiled and Blessed.
Steely Dan is Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the rest of the musicians change by song. One of the best albums ever made. This is the band your band listen to
Welcome to the end of one rainbow! Many bands of the 70s and 80s were all different genre's and all were their own rainbow... Steely Dan was the closest to the pot of Gold!
I’m a big Steely fan since 1975, Since you’re a new listener to Steely Dan my I suggest that before you start your podcast, do some research on the band it self. I realize the point you want to capture is your first time hearing the song. I love that! But maybe find out who the band members are before your first listen. That way you can perhaps inform other young listeners to who is playing each instrument. Steve Gadd on drums is a good example. Wishing you success with your podcast, cheers.
Steely Dan is one of my top three favorite bands. They have a deep catalog of excellent songs. "Aja" is the title song on their best-selling album, but there's a lot more. My suggestions: "Peg," "Home at Last," "Reeling in the Years," "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Black Friday," "Pretzel Logic," "Jack of Speed," "The Things I Miss the Most."
Becker and Fagen retired the band from live performances altogether to become a studio-only band, opting to record with a revolving cast of session musicians. Rolling Stone has called them "the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies".
"Who is playing the instruments on this!?" You ask. A Who's Who of every top Seventies sessionman - with each song redone and redone and redone with different studio bands, until Walter and Donald got the perfect version and take. For this song, it was: - Donald Fagen: lead vocals, synthesizer, police whistle - Walter Becker, Denny Dias (who played the guitar solo), and Larry Carlton: guitars - Michael Omartian: acoustic piano - Joe Sample: electric piano (a first-rank jazz musician rather than a session player, from the Jazz Crusaders) - Wayne Shorter: tenor saxophone (another first-rank jazz musician and one of the greatest saxophonists of all time, from Weather Report) - Timothy B. Schmit: backing vocals (from the Eagles) - Victor Feldman: percussion, vibraphone - Chuck Rainey: bass guitar - Steve Gadd: drums (while most of his career has been as a sessionman, he's also noted as a fantastic jazz player)
Yeah I love some STEELY Dan 😍 and you're listening to the album title song Aja . My opinion they're Master Album ! I I remember when this album was released I brought the album I was going to name my baby girl after the album but I turned around and spell her name Asia and that was 34 years ago ! The whole album is off the chain !
This whole album was a master piece. I will suggest a song by another group called Its a Beautiful Day, the song title White Bird. In a golden cage. It too is a Master piece.
This is about as lushly produced an album as you'll ever hear. They took a LOT of expensive time to make this album sound as smooth and musically unique as it does. Try Reelin' In The Years or My Old School, or Do It Again. All bangers!
This was a killer tune to go parkin with your girl "up on the hill" on a full moon, looking down on the city lights and having some cocktails....i miss the chill 70s vibe..
Steely Dan has a lot of great music, a lot lot. Black Cow is a must. But, listen to your subscribers, they know the songs to react to. Peg, Deacon Blues, and Home At Last are all great songs off the Aja album. Walter Becker, and Donald Fagen were the only constants in the band. They had different musicians playing on different songs. Kid Charlemagne, Rikki Don't Lose that Number, Do It Again, and Reeling In the Years are all reaction worthy. Dive deep and enjoy their talent. Peace.
Conventional Wisdom 1: coked-up elevator music for the unhappy few who don't know london's calling. Conventional Wisdom 2: apex of the Dan, an otherworldly blend of cool. Conventional Wisdom 3: holy shit that's amazing!
Who's playing the instruments? Some of the best musicians on the planet. But it's also what they're playing. Donald and Walter were in charge of that. Also, the mixing and engineering is so clean, you could eat off of it. There are dozens of tracks, some barely loud enough in the mix to hear. But with all that traffic, you can hear the tiniest detail in every one of them.
I don’t know that there is such a thing as a bad Steely Dan song. I’ve loved everything I’ve ever heard by them and got lucky enough to see them do this one live on 2014.
DUDE!!!! This isn't even, BY FAR, their best song. 80% of their catalog is LITERALLY "the best songs to listen to while smoking weed". 😁😎🤣🤣🤣 Try "Peg", "My Old School", "King of the World", or "Babylon Sister" on for size. TRUST ME!
ok. jo dee Messina- my give a damns busted. Kacey musgraves- blowing smoke and merry go round joni mitchell-a case of you the eagles- seven bridges road, already gone, take it easy stever earle- copperhead road, snake oil and guitar Town Paul simon- me and Julio down by the school yard Alice Cooper- no more mr. nice guy Allman brothers- blue sky, whipping post Neil young- unknown legend traveling wilburys- tweeter and the monkey man and end of the line
Hey Adogg, I've got some new artists for you to check out, if you're interested. "Yebba - My Mind (Sofar NYC)" this is Abby Smith, and she will Blow you away with her vocals. And "Bob Dylan - Mr. Tambourine Man (Live at the Newport Folk Festival 1969)" and "Neil Young - Old Man" all of these artists have an extensive collection and each one of them would be a wonderful rabbit hole to travel down. I hope you add them to your list. Thanks, and have a good day~
This is what I was playing in high school trying to get laid while a lot of guys were playing Journey. One of t benefits of listening to my older brothers music
Try Josie, the best song on this album, although as everyone else has said, there is no bad song on this album. I was in my last year in high school when this came out and ruined my LP.
Welcome to Steely Dan bro. Been listening to these guys since the 70s. This song is my personal favorite.
The word that describes Steely Dan is SMOOTH. Every player is top notch. The production is impeccable
Best track from arguably the best album ever.
Yup…that is Steve Gadd on the drums.
Another track with him playing a sick beat is Paul Simon’s “Late in the Evening”
And Simon's 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover. His opening beats on that are a sampler's dream.
The drummer is Steve Gadd
Next steely Dan reaction should be their song Black Cow!!!!!!
Great reaction, man. My favorite musical group of all. The whole Aja album is amazing.
Hi ADogg! Big hit off their first album. Reelin In The Years! Amazing guitar man! ❤️
Donald Fagen - lead vocals, synthesizer, police whistle
Steve Gadd - drums
Victor Feldman - percussion, vibraphone
Chuck Rainey - bass guitar
Walter Becker, Denny Dias and Larry Carlton - guitars
Michael Omartian - piano
Joe Sample - electric piano
Wayne Shorter - tenor saxophone
Timothy B. Schmit - backing vocals
When you get a bunch of musical geniuses together like all the above who made up Steely Dan, Aja is what you get. Perfection. Just perfection.
Steely Dan is Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker plus the great musicians like John Harrington, Steve Gadd, etc.
A really, REALLY great band!
Check out their track "Home At Last" with the legendary Bernard "Purty" Purdie on the drums!
I love the jazzy piano at the beginning of that song and Fagan's vocals are so smooth. Probably in my top 5 favorite SD songs.
Oh...thank you so much! Steely Dan were/are one of the very best bands back in the day. Lush beyond words. Now try exploring some of their other work. You really won’t be disappointed. This takes me back to Sunday afternoon gatherings with friends. Glorious! Happy New Year everyone!
Steely Dan is a huge part of the soundtrack of my late teens...
The 1970s AM and FM radio airwaves were filled with a lot of great music presented by very talented musicians and artists who refused to be pigeonholed......we were spoiled and Blessed.
Young man! Welcome to Steely Dan. Please keep expending yours and our music experience.
Steely Dan is Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the rest of the musicians change by song. One of the best albums ever made. This is the band your band listen to
Peg is the song to check out next!! The whole album is phenomenal but it will have you smiling from beginning to end
To see a young many truly appreciate the fine music of Steely Dan is such a treat. Keep up the good work!
This is one of the few albums I remember the exact very first time I heard it; it remains on my playlist to this day
The entire album is incredible!
👏👏👏 also perhaps give a listen to 'Deacon Blues', don't see it listed in the comments so far
Great album!
Hey Nineteen, Peg, Reelin' In The Years, are all great Steely Dan songs!
You've just started the Steely Dan journey
Steve Gadd plays drums and Wayne Shorter plays sax.
Love Steely Dan I bought this album when it came out a long time ago, every song is beautiful.
Aja is pronounced like the continent Asia.
Your favorite band's favorite band.
If Steely Dan ever produced a bad song it certainly never made any of their albums - sheer genius.
I like this guy reaction. If your interested it what we call progressive rock. Just music 🎶 🎵. Where did the 70s go. I TURN 20 IN 73 SWEET MEMORIES
Anything at all from this album is amazing. Check out Deacon Blues.
Steely Dan is one of my top three favorite bands. They have a deep catalog of excellent songs. "Aja" is the title song on their best-selling album, but there's a lot more. My suggestions: "Peg," "Home at Last," "Reeling in the Years," "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Black Friday," "Pretzel Logic," "Jack of Speed," "The Things I Miss the Most."
steve gadd on the drums
I consider you a musical genius for fully understanding what it is that the Dan does on the first listen.
I fully endorse the opinion of that guy
Welcome to the long-lost world of REAL MUSIC, friend!
Becker and Fagen retired the band from live performances altogether to become a studio-only band, opting to record with a revolving cast of session musicians. Rolling Stone has called them "the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies".
But then they toured in 1993 for the first time in over 20 years and I saw them in Houston. Perfection.
Very jazzy. I love it. I recommend “Do it Again” for your next Steely Dan song.
Dr. Steve Gadd on the drums. One of the best ever.
Black cow from this album is 🔥
There's a great documentary about the recording of this album you should check out. I apologize, but the name of it escapes me.
A journey through space and time
You hit the Jackpot here... All of Steely Dan is the bomb.
Steve Gadd on drums. Legend has it that he got this in one take. I still have a hard time believing it.
I heard he read the music and yes..he did it in one take...a drum god!!
"Who is playing the instruments on this!?" You ask.
A Who's Who of every top Seventies sessionman - with each song redone and redone and redone with different studio bands, until Walter and Donald got the perfect version and take.
For this song, it was:

- Victor Feldman: percussion, vibraphone
- Chuck Rainey: bass guitar
- Steve Gadd: drums (while most of his career has been as a sessionman, he's also noted as a fantastic jazz player)
Those are some of the top people in the business bro....Steve Gadd on drums, one of the best.
Drummer is Steve Gadd.

you have a great ear and wide range of music 'likes' They are amazing musicians!
This is about as lushly produced an album as you'll ever hear. They took a LOT of expensive time to make this album sound as smooth and musically unique as it does. Try Reelin' In The Years or

They are just as good live. Great choice today! Happy New Year to you!

"I don't know who's playing drums, but Jesus Christ!"
Actually, it's God on drums (Steve Gadd).

What album is Dirty Work on?
That’s from their first album “Can’t Buy A Thrill”. They had another lead singer back then on some tracks.
Not Jesus though close as far as the drummer which was out of this world as all of their musicians always are!
Dude you need a new microphone, treble sound or bad editing 🤔!
