The freezing tracks function is so helpful to me because At the minute I’m stuck to using a crappy old laptop that I have had for 5 years now and some of the songs I have been working on have had 15-20 tracks on them with some heavy plugins, freezing tracks will save me a lot of frustration haha thank you, Adam!

Glad to see Adam mention freezing tracks. I found that incredibly helpful when I was working on a core2duo that was beyond showing it's age. It's also wicked helpful for learning to dial in a tone and stick with it. I'm lucky to have a much better setup now, but I still freeze tracks out of habit and it helps me not constantly fuck with plugin parameters.

@@BellsCuriosityShop It's hugely helpful. When I think of old school 4 track recordings, the level of commitment is maddening but I don't know that digital recording has really made for better music. Whatever little things we can do to commit, and learn from those commitments, seems like a strength. We have the versatility to go back and correct mistakes, which is incredible, but there's so much to learn from tracking a shit tone, trying to make it work, and realizing what went wrong.

@@Zoidberg696 I used a four-track cassette for demos thirty years ago. It was tough trying to get everything into four tracks - drum machine on one, bass, rhythm guitar then vocal and lead guitar on final track. That's what worked best for me as I used cheap tape that sounded terrible on bouncedowns. No effects afterwards and threeband eq, with every mix sounding like mud.

This reduces the CPU amount by an *unbelievable* amount. The prompt at the bottom of the settings window suggests that low latencies may be unstable, but I've been having *zero* issues!

I recorded and mixed (with the skills of a cheap combo amp user) two EPs with a computer that had only 2 gigs of ram. The EPs included: 4 distorted rhythm guitar tracks, 2 lead guitar tracks, 2 clean guitar tracks, 3 vocal tracks, 2 bass tracks, one virtual drum kit but all the parts were mixed separately , 2 reverb guitar tracks, and I don't remember the rest.
But yeah, the computer I was using at the time could handle that rather easily. However, whenever I had to mix, I had to take a listen to the tracks outside Reaper so that there would not be any "visuals" going on (the tracks moving over time, etc), then pause and do the changes that I felt were necessary.
So yeah, couldn't mix as I listened, but still, the computed got the job done. As for the quality, well, let's put say they were two fun projects.

After hearing about Reaper here for years I took the plunge as I'm finally starting to need a DAW. It seems super optimized, my 10 year old CPU never broke a sweat on my projects. I run into issues with Chrome gobbling all of my 8 GB of memory. I was curious how much Reaper would pile on to my memory woes so fired up Task Manager to have a look. My jaw dropped when I saw Reaper only using about 10 MB, even with a project loaded. It looks to me like Reaper will virtually unload a project if Reaper has gone out of focus for a while. When you bring it back into focus you can see your project getting loaded back into memory super quick. These guys are my kind of programmers (I do almost the same thing for a living). I'm totally sold on Reaper and will happily fork over the miniscule $60 when I finally get time to use it again.

What I've found is that at less than 1/3rd of of the price of Pro Tools, Mixcraft is still the more user friendly DAW, and way easier to be creative with. I like Logic Pro. When away from the studio, I use Garageband and a tiny travel guitar -that cannot stay in tune- to sketch on an iPad. There are many AUv3 third party plugins now.
The reasons to use Reaper *instead* on this channel last week (promoting a ProMix course that I own and intend to study) were not convincing at all. “Complicate things to customize workflow!”
The reason touted here (limited budget) makes a lot more sense.

Just compared Reaper and Cakewalk in terms of low-latency DI tracking of a guitar using an ampsim as insert plugin along with one instance of GGD Invasion. One thing I always do when mixing and don't need to hear anything back in real time, is I put my buffer size up to the max. There's normally no reason to keep it way down when mixing, and the only thing you will get from doing that is worse performance.

Used to play around with FL Studio years ago. Always found the interface kind of confusing but it has a ton of built in toys (synths, sequencers, samplers, drum machines, etc.) Not sure how well it would do as your primary DAW as it seems more focused on midi and electronic based production. I never tried interfacing it with real instruments and mics, it was just a fun distraction.
You'd probably be better off sticking with the DAW you're familiar with. I believe FL Studio can be run as a plugin through other DAWs if you're just wanting to use some of its synths, samplers, and other modules for your current project. Stick with the workflow that you know imo.

So I recently bought a Zoom H4n Pro recorder for field recording interviews for a podcast. With the recorder you get Wavelab LE and Cubase LE for free which is awesome. I like free stuff. Anyway, I went and tried to download the Wavelab LE so I could edit my recent interview and get to know the software. Included in the box were download codes for the software so I just went on with it. OMG what a frickin' nightmare. You would think that the company behind the software would be interested in me succeeding in my download and having such a great time with my free edition of the software that I eventually would buy the full edition. Apparently not.
First, I watched an outdated video of how to get around to it, where I was asked to make a profile on Steinberg's homepage. Then I had to confirm my email via a confirmation code and via link. Then I had to download their installation guide. Then I had to download their elicenser. Then they sent me a new verification code to put in my elicenser, and behold - the elicenser software that they requested me to download was apparantly now outdated. I then had to download a new elicenser via their homepage. This one was not outdated, and I succeeded in entering the code. I was now ready to download... CUBASE LE which not at all was the software I had requested for downloading. LOL.
I then got angry and deleted all of their crap and installed Reaper in two clicks. They can stick their Wavelab and Cubase up their respective behinds. Cheers from Denmark, fuck them, and knep dig selv Glenn.

Hi glenn, so i have recently been receiving problems with my audio interface. before the problem i was able to use the wasapi audio(only) system with my scarlett 2i2 2nd gen on reaper with the only problem of slight latency. i use my laptop headphones output because i don't have audio monitors and the interface headphone output is not functional. something happened after that and now i use the same preferences as before and it says audio device closed and i can only use the asio preference which stops me using the laptop output. is there anything you can think of other than spending more than 100$ that can help me get out of this situation? thanks and fuck you glenn

Hey Glenn, you should try mixing a song without listening to it or any of the tracks in the process.

Freezing tracks is something I've never heard of before. While I don't use reaper, I found this option is available in most DAWs. Don't think I'll be switching any time soon, bit I appreciate the video regardless. Thanks, guys!

oh come on, video about Reaper performance metering and you completely ignored entire RT CPU % usage, and RT-longest-block latency? those are the primary indicators of when and why computer struggles with audio and results in crackling...
right-click the Performance Meter and see those infos ;)
