- Violet-tailed Sylph (Aglaiocercus coelestis) in Ecuador.
Although formerly considered a race of Long-tailed Sylph (Aglaiocercus kingi), the morphology, behavior, range, and altitudinal distribution of Violet-tailed Sylph classify it as its own species. It is common in cloud forests, especially in mossy areas and around 1000 meters in elevation. source: Cornell neotropical birds.
Years ago, my wife and I were in Quito adopting a son. While meeting with the orphanage director, this amazing hummingbird with a long blue tail flew into his office from outside.and all around the room. Could this be the species I observed. It was right in the heart of Quito.
Funny, I have been in Quito with friends helping them to adopt a girl. Quito is a little bit to high for this species. So you have probably seen one of the Trainbearer hummingbirds. Black-tailed or Green-tailed Traibearer; both species have an incredible long tail and are found in and around Quito.
@@Birdfun Wow. What a coincidence. I remember a blue tail but it was 20 years ago. The orphanage was just off the Pan American Highway and across the side street from a parade ground/stadium that was used in movie, Proof of Life.
Wow Amazing beautiful color
Wat een bijzondere zeg, die staart is zeer uitzonderlijk.Bedankt Udo.

Wow. What a special hummingbird beauty and a great insect catcher too. Nice how it returned to the same branch for you.
It looks like they were catching insects, but actually the hummingbirds were visiting a nearby feeder 🙂
