    Typically here in Ireland the moisture actually comes from our above average rates of rainfall... but that would have been a hard mechanic to implement.

    This game does look really awesome but I have to ask, why this instead of Inis? Both seem to be doing the same things in very similar ways.

    • @NoPunIncluded
      @NoPunIncluded  3 роки тому +23

      They have overlapping elements but the way they feel in play is totally different. Inis is more "armies on a map." Brian Boru is more an old school euro.

      Before even hitting play I was thinking of Inis. I gotta get that fella out again.

      I see the trick taking element as a sort of action selection

    My copy of Le Roi Est Mort finally arrived on Friday and I'm looking forward to playing it soon. The only thing putting me off eventually getting Brian Boru is the player count - I just don't know if I will get it played often enough. I'll have to see how I feel when it comes out in French.

    I was intrigued by your opinion of event decks as a lazy design choice. Did I understand correctly? Can you expand on that or have you on any other video or podcast episode? Thanks and keep the good work!

    • @NoPunIncluded
      @NoPunIncluded  3 роки тому +1

      I don' think I can fit much into a youtube comment here, but generally event decks are used to prop up an unexciting design. They're a common design trope that is most frequently used as a patch rather than a thoughtful addition to a game.

    • @st0ox
      @st0ox 3 роки тому

      @@NoPunIncluded I totally agree, just wanted to add the following:
      In Robinson Crusoe I really like the event deck, because the whole game is build around it, so in this case it is really not just a patch and the consequence mechanic makes you feel a bit more responsible for the events that happen, but you never know exactly when something bites you in the ass down the line. So it is more risk management then just waiting for something interesting to show up in the event deck.
      So I see Robinson Crusoe as an exception to the rule, but I totally agree that event decks are usually a lazy design choice.
      Imagine Twilight struggle would have an event deck that would trigger the region scoring and some other events. It was a clear design choice, that those events are also triggered via the player hand even if they are bad for the player, but the designer had to add a crucial exception to the usual game flow, that you actually have to play those cards and are not allowed to lie about still having them at the end of a round.

    This game has been on ky radar for a couple of years now, but i keep forgetting about it. Trawling through some of your older videos on a lethargic bank holiday Monday, its not back up the list. I do really fancy this game, amd it looks GORGEOUS i think.

    Ahh Efka, I don’t know about this one. I’m struggling to see this being fun , I’m a sucker for Celtic art and lore but this looks very subdued in its game play . Was it exciting? Did you have great fun? I really don’t know if I want it enough. I want to like it …….

    Yeah... I get what you were talking about at the end there. This feels like a game I... I guess aesthetically appreciate? or something, but not one I would enjoy playing. From an impartial point of view I admire the mechanics, but not from a personal point of view.

    Thank you. I recently bought Brian Baru and really enjoy this game. I love the secondary actions. It makes the trick interesting for all the players each round and launches you into the other four areas of the board. I like the unique combination of mechanics that go with the Ireland theme.

    Watched this just after the SU&SD Furnace review - spooky to both be doing games where you’re happy to lose a trick / bid.
    Looks a cracking game - agree whole heartedly about the player colours, what an odd choice in such a seemingly thoughtful game.

    Great review, however due to the minutiae involved, I couldn't really get a sense of how the gameplay really feels. Don't get me wrong, you did a great job. I'm just going to need to see a playthrough on this one before deciding on a purchase.

    My brain won't let me wrap it around trick taking, so this is not a game for me. But I really appreciate how rich it is with interesting creative ideas. Thank you for bringing it to our attention, No Pun Included.
    And speaking of attention, have you considered guest-starring in an episode of Drawfee? They are a wonderfully positive art/comedy channel, and their fan community is extremely kind and supportive.
    I think your creativity and sense of humour would work quite well in their sweet chaotic show. Also, one of their hosts, Nathan, is really into board gaming. And all of them are invested in social issues. So I think both you as people and everything you do on your channel could really resonate with them.

  • @devincross2205

    It's just like monopoly! There's a track and different colours of properties that you get with cards. If you're smart, you might want to focus on specific colours. Also the cards cost money and you try to take the properties away from other players. The big difference is that it's set in Ireland.

    • @TheRatedOniChannel
      @TheRatedOniChannel 3 роки тому +1

      And no roll&move!

    • @devincross2205
      @devincross2205 3 роки тому

      @@TheRatedOniChannel This small modern innovation really elevates it IMO. Then again, it's also just like The Game of Life. You have to pick the path you focus on, you want to make money, gather assets and definitely get married. I know it's basically role and move, but I did kind of miss the spinning wheel.

    • @TheRatedOniChannel
      @TheRatedOniChannel 3 роки тому +1

      @@devincross2205 That damn wheel is way too fun to spin, I blame how funny looking it is and that there is something in physical wheels that we can spin, probably why Wheel of Fortune and The Price is Right are still popular.

      I am not trying to rush to the publisher's defense here: I genuinely liked the art myself. I like the Celtic borders, and the painting style reminded me of the old Catan art or the historical realism of the Osprey war books.
