Appreciate that! The only person who can get in the way of my own success is me, so I try to learn as much as I can from anyone who has something to offer
1. get low to use legs, finish high 2. a little off midline so dont hit chest 3. platform with connected elbows 4. big arc to setter 5. move, avoid back to setter 6. arms inside the knees 7. drop 1 shoulder to target right of left 8. legs shoulder width get low 9. low to high 10. stretch hips and groin to stay low and mobile move side to side
16:42 you can see clearly the smile in his eyes when he got the point of being a little bit low and being able to receive better instantly (after the Pro review), its like a Hinata Shoyo after getting his first good pass. As a setter i also give this tip(being low to react fast) to all receivers in my team and its been really usefull.
I’m definitely struggling with defense since I’m mostly self taught through videos like on this channel so I’m glad to have some new ideas and suggestions to practice around with.
Coach Donny you really are a grate player yourself I've learned a lot since I started following you I'm a rather short player but I'm trying to refine my technique as much as possible so thank you sir for the grate videos.
These videos with Gage are incredible gems for transitioning into a bit more advanced play, where I've felt a lot of frustrating plateaus in my ability and the need to branch out & explore what I am really comfortable with... similarly with the content Dustin Watten has been putting out lately, I'm sure you've seen those too :) I especially like the smooth low-high philosophy you guys talked about. I rarely ever leave youtube comments but thank you SO MUCH for these videos! It wasn't so long ago that I learned how to put a basic platform together from your tutorials :)
I play badminton. You should try the other version of the split step where you don't jump up. You drop down by widening your feet by a couple inches. I find that it's faster and more explosive.
I went to Pac Rim facility to do lessons with the Donovan Constable, and he mentioned that Joe is a really great setter who happens to set similarly. Will there be another setter video with Joe? If so, can you talk about cushioning the ball or having “sticky hands” (like holding onto the ball for a small amount of time instead of only pushing outwards)?
its scary how good middle school kids are 😂😂. (im a middle schooler...) but seriously, they have nationals and everything and damn a 9 year old is doing pancakes, 12 year old being the 🐐 of middles
There’s this mantra martial arts have a lot that says “Foot Work - Body Work - Hand Work” I feel like that’s a universal truth for athleticism in general.

To me it looked like Coach Donny wasn’t moving OFF of the split step. I saw the split step, a tiny moment of being stationary, and then the push off the feet to go for the ball. Tough for Gage to hit the down ball and see if the timing of Coach Donny’s split step was there.
Can you explain why over is better than off the net? Isnt over giving away a ball. If its off, at least we have an out of system set.... or did I misunderstand?
I need clarification too 😂 I just told my girls at AAU that we do NOT want to give the other team a free ball with an overpass and that we would rather have the balls on our side off the net.
ahh pro setters usually jump set and make contact higher than the net so makes sense why over would be easier for the setters they play with, don't apply this if your setters dont jump set or are under the net.
Then, when you adjusted to the lower stance, it forced you to be slightly forward on your foot and you were much quicker and could get around the ball more consistently! Nice! And how astute of the libero to pick up on the stance and for you to make a change without being defensive about constructive help.
Sorry, but I’m not understanding why Gage is always bending his platform after passing. I’ve always been coaching that you keep your arms extended and freeze platform for 2-3 secs after ball release
it depends if ur getting a free ball, or a hard ball...usually on hardball we just keep our arms firm and extended, While On free ball we are focusing on targetting our ball placement, so bending our platform makes it quite easier to pass, and additionally from experience, it stops from over recieving the ball....this is just my opinion as a libero aswell
My coach constantly tells me to not swing my arms when I'm receiving, but if I don't I feel the ball doesn't go high enough for the setter. Any advice? I have been focusing on fixing my platform and keeping low to use my legs.
I agree. Defalco on the channel would be insane, but it would probably be hard for him to pull those strings after the olympics lmao. Any good pro hitter would be interesting. Id personally love to see a middle video
Donnie, I see before your tip from pro, that you start flat foot, and your split step seemed to be heels instead of toes. The libero seemed to be slightly more on the balls of his feet rather than his arch or heel.
I don't agree with the arm swinging in the first drill, had a lot of girls this last season doing this and being too early or late with their platform.

hey donny. i love that despite being a coach, you're still vulnerable to learning. your humbleness is really inspiring! keep it up!

Donny is so good at defense. Love watching him play libero as much as I love watching him hit.
Thank you for the kind words! I put a lot of effort into reading hitters and technique
i would let donny hit too ngl

Can u get a pro outside to look at ur hitting, would love to see what they think about
We need to move this comment to the top😭
Gage seems pretty good at this passing thing, he should try it in game
the shadeee
Thank you. I really need this. Preparing for a competition coming up.

Really helpful advice, this upload was great and offered things I will definitely try out my next session!

Yeah I’m trying to teach my daughter the delay set, the finger reflex thing but I can’t get it through her head. She’s like ok dad.

Big hug, from Brazil
12:21 „international freeball“ Have to remember that for my overpasses😂😂😂

Coach Donny this helped alot😊
1. get low to use legs, finish high

3. platform with connected elbows
4. big arc to setter
5. move, avoid back to setter
6. 11:00

Great content, thanks.
@Gage Worsely, maybe I see you at an Bundesliga-Match...
Thanks coach

Coach Sony is the best
I was lib in hs and tho my time in the sun is over, I still want to be better so as to pass on my experience and knowledge to the next gen
It’s never too late to play volleyball, if u really want, to go for it! Just stretch properly beforehand
BIG difference in how quick Gage’s platform appears from a bent elbow position vs. Donny’s from a straight arm position.
I love you coach
Can you do one of these videos but for hitting please😅

@@bradmckavanagh7202 i mean most the audience here ain't pro lol
@@bradmckavanagh7202 that was my guess. Makes sense!
To set with more pace, in higher levels we do jump sets a lot. The body lenguage and decision speed need to be a thing to the defense we're facing
He played in Bulgaria ❤

Great players
Hey coach! Can you review the new asics powerbreak ff and the metarise 2 when it comes out?

Do one of these with a pro hitter

Hey brother.
Can you make a video that a pro libero teaches how to dive and pancake?
What shoes are you rocking coach Donny
can we get a "you know what i am saying?" count hahaha
Does anyone have any advice? I want to become a libero so badly but I don’t have a way to practice serves. Is there any trick yall can think of?

Hello Coach Donny! Question, why do I see liberos sometimes get into the front court? Are they allow to get into the front court for certain scenario?
Also, thank you for your videos. I really wanted to learn how to play volleyball (again).

OH donny is shorter than a pro libero wtf
Hey I'm a
Background music makes it hard for focusing
Anyone know what shoes Gage is wearing?
idk which is on here, but OoS has a couple recent ish videos about what shoes their boys love to use
