  • With the blink of an eye, two months sailing Te Rehutai in Auckland has gone in a flash.
    It may not seem like much- but the testing and development benefits has far exceeded the expectations for the team. But now, it is time for the great migration of Te Rehutai for a long northern summer ahead getting used to the unique characteristics of the waters to Barcelona.

    For those who don’t know the foils on each side of the boat are controlled by computers sampling the data off a multitude of sensors at 10s of thousands times a second. This type of hydrofoil yacht has only really been possible in the last 10 or so years due to how hard it is to control the foils’ leading edge at the speeds and loads it’s experiencing

    As an Aussie, I'm proud that after 132 years of United States dominance, we came along in 1983 and showed they could be beaten, in part by an ingenious keel design. New Zealand then went that idea of great design and took it to an INSANE aerospace level! Their boats are more planes than boats!! Well done brothers. You deserve every victory! Good luck in 2024 against our shared brothers and sisters in the United Kingdom.

      the only thing I can say, it all happens on the sails that's mostly work like airplane wing, the concept is to direct the boat relative to the wind so that it creates "lifting" force to the boat and the crew make use of that force to make the boat move forward...

      @@noone-ld7pt I like your pfp, so here goes :)...
      I'm not a competitive sailor, but I know a reasonable amount about watercraft from my grandpa who hand-built several wooden boats (a couple of which were of his own design). So that said: this amazing yacht is a "hydroplaning monohull" design which means that it basically acts like a normal sailling yacht at low speeds or in rough conditions, but once it gets moving quick enough (as seen here) those curved arms sticking out the sides of the monohull can be lowered into the water to submerge the hydrofoil surfaces ("water wings") mounted on the ends. This allows the yacht to semi-magically become a hydroplane watercraft i.e. it lifts itself out of the water and is supported solely by the upward "lift" of the hydrofoils while still being able to maintain directional control. This massively reduces the drag caused by water moving around/past the hull (and "meeting itself again" behind the rear end of the craft which causes a massive suction effect that can add a huge amount of drag to poorly designed hulls). That's all well and good when you're moving in a straight line with a following wind behind your sails, but when you want to turn the boat across the wind (called "tacking") to change course or make headway into an oncoming breeze, things get a LOT more complicated.
      Edit: I thought the "guys on bikes" were raising/lowering the hydrofoils manually, but another commenter mentioned that this is all computer-controlled. So the crew must be managing the sails and generating power to run the electronics/hydraulics which control the hydroplane arms.

    Can someone that us has some expertise explain to us laymen: 1) why does it look like it’s floating? 2) how does it reach such high speeds without a motor? 3) how can channel winds no matter what direction it’s traveling?

    • @simoncasford9640
      @simoncasford9640 Рік тому +1

      1. It is being lifted by horizontal foils under the water, which are generating lift (like a plane wing does) as it moves through the water. 2. The sails are generating forward thrust the same as a normal sailboats sails, though these are a lot more efficient and the drag of the boat is less (due to only the foils being in the water, which are much less draggy than a full boat hull). 3.These boats cant go directly upwind, but about 35 degrees to either side of it (i.e. tacking). When they get to the top mark and are heading downwind (again 30 degrees either side of directly downwind) they are going 2.5 or 3 times the speed of the wind (i.e. wind is 15 kph, but boat speed is 45kph). So even though you are heading the same direction as the wind, it feels like you are heading into the wind -the apparent wind is coming from the front when you are moving. If you stopped it would feel like its coming from behind. So it looks like you are always heading into the wind.

    In Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson there are ocean liners that run on wind and ride on hydrofoils that transit the Atlantic Ocean in a week or so. I wonder how much this could scale with extremely advanced computer control of the sails and foil surfaces.

    These newer sail boats are insane. If we applied that tech to transport we could make international travel and shipping much cheaper and less reliant on oil. Oh to dream…
