Phoenix maybe. More or less the continuation of the old kingfisher lines. They’re €200 for a dt, more for a wf… But you’d need to be in a tiny niche to get something out of a purchase like that. I fish both silk and plastic and they both have their place.

Always good advice! I find attaching a tippet ring to the end of a tapered leader is a great way to provide for flexibility when it comes to renewing or changing the length and/or diameter of the tippet.

As to the change something comment, my dad used to say " If you're not catching fish, you're not holding your mouth right!"
As for fishing one spot too long, I caught my first steelhead pounding a corky and yarn off of the fishes nose for at least 30 minutes. It had to be because I did hold my mouth differently many times...

Brian, thank you. I cannot even put into words how helpful your information has been in guiding me these last few days. This last week, I discovered that Arkansas Game & Fish stocks trout in lakes nearby my home. I only found this out after pulling out a Rainbow while actively catching Largemouth Bass on fitnesses presentations (I’m a little bit addicted to bass fishing, but we won’t tell my girlfriend that.).... I had never caught a trout in my life prior to that moment.
I have since become addicted to trout fishing, and I have bought a Redington fly combo at my local store. You are absolutely right about the fly line being terrible. I just placed a substantial order through your site for Scientific Angler Frequency line, a lot of flies, and a few accessories.
Thank you for all that you do to make fly fishing accessible to those of us who did not grow up around the sport. You have just gained a life-long customer, and I look forward to visiting Mad River in person if I am ever in Ohio!

Well Done ! 😎👍 I tell folks line 1st. Casting lessons 2nd. But I figure the leader and tippet into the cost of the line.
That said a few casting lessons will give someone some solid technique to work on. I do usually suggest a good entomology book right after that. 🤷🏼‍♂️ JMHO

Allso, atleast in spin fishing, if you get a bite, change lures or fly befor presenting to the fish again. Latest example is from yesterday when i went out with dull hooks. The trout bit every lure the first time i presented it, but the second time she saw the same lure, she remembered that it hurt, and she was not intrested in the slightest. This went on for 5-6 diferent lures befor she got spooked and buggered of. And dont be like me, use sharp hooks! :)

I understand the fat to thin rule if the leader material is consistent. My question, does stiffness trump diameter? Would it be wrong to have a 30lb butt section of mono then taper using a stiffer fluorocarbon tippet in the 15-20lb range? The butt should always be the stiffer section?

My brother and I differ when it comes to how often we change spots. He is SO THOROUGH, I would lose my mind…if I’m on a pattern that I know the fish are into, I’ll cast to a spot maybe twice before moving along, bang bang bang. Who’s right and who’s wrong, really? We both took hundreds of trout last season so it’s a matter of your own personal style and what your psyche will allow. Establishing a pattern that the fish are hitting is the most important thing…and it’s always beneficial to be a fly tier. Just today I had a bunch of rainbows swinging half heartedly at a muddler pattern. I swapped over to this CDC muddler thing I developed over the winter and blammo…that was the necessary shift. At that point, I can start my typical high speed working of spots one right after another. A quick side note…if you fish for brookies, 20 minutes in one spot is a colossal waste of time. Brookies are gonna swing the moment they see something interesting…it’s part of their feeding strategy. If you aren’t getting hit, they aren’t around, your fly is scaring them or you’ve blown your cover in some way or another.

Tests are a great teaching tool. It could be fun to have 3 different categories of tests; beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Perhaps better would be; dockers, waders, and boaters? That kind of thing. Have the tests always available and recommend everyone to take a 'before' test. Reiterating the basics at each level. The learning will skyrocket. More interaction and your show are all about interaction and teaching. Just an idea...

$300 fly line is expensive, even a silk line would be about $220 at the high end. I think for beginners (and anyone else) - Wulff lines are great. One to make roll casting easier and I think (given the taper) very forgiving...

Depends on storage, usage, care etc. Store your lines in a cool dry space when not in use. If you fish dirty water clean your lines. If you dont use them often stretch them out to get the coils out. Want to kill lines put them in the back window of your car and leave them in the sun
