Fantastic! My first time I saw these type of fletching was in Alaska in the early 1990's and wondered how it was done. Thanks for this video I really enjoyed it.
I've just started making my own wood arrows for my recurve, i used to shoot carbon. I buy pre-finished shafts from 3rivers and fletch 'em up. Next thing i want to try is splicing and maybe cresting. Awesome stuff! Beautiful job!!
Thank you sir. I'm familiar with left and right wing, just wasn't sure because it looked like you were using straight. Thanks for the info. I just finished two dozen for practice and deer season (it's coming) this year and wanted to get into true splicing-yours look great!
Yeah... I bet you are right. I also suspected that the area of the splice is important when they need to interlock. My feathers are from the Eastern Wild Turkey I kill. Even if they don't interlock, they still shoot really well but it'd be nice to get as good as you have become. By the way, I splice out of necessity and not for looks but your arrows look GREAT!!! I saw a guy splice two different woods (walnut and spruce) to make a stunning arrow shaft and it'd be nice to see the two arts of feather craft and wood craft combined. Thanks for the knowledge.
You do want to try to splice in the same general area on both feathers. I've not taken on the splicing of shafts yet. I've seen them done and they looks great but I'm concerned about how strong they are and how much that would affect the spines.
Well sir, at no point during this excellent vid did you mention "dont drop the new feather cutter on your finger tips" Lucky enough I had made 10 incase of such calamity. Thankyou so much for your help.
Thanks for the detailed vid! Keen on trying it myself in my free time now... I can just tell though, I'm gonna nick my fingers so much trying to get the skin off hahahaha
Yes no matter how many feathers you splice there are going to be some mistakes. I seem to make most of my mistakes when I'm trying to make a video......LOL
@bounty764hunter Yes man, i got the red barred divided, the ones i showed b4, but the full feathers im going to do some time later when i get money again lol and about the shafts you have, the cresting do you use a device that spins the shafts?? im new to the cresting i use carbons but as i said before id like to make a doz or 2 of wood shafts,, i like bamboo but the heavy birtch looks good too
Thanks!!! I get my feathers from various places like 3Rivers archery. You need to order Right Wing feathers for a right Helical and Left Wing feathers for a left Helical. Hope this helps.
Thank you for the video. I have actually done this but not on your level of course. My question is: Does your adaptations match or ZIP well with the spliced or 'introduced' feather? My arrows that I've spliced fly well and look fairly good with NO gaps...BUT they do not interlock with each other and upon hitting hard targets, they tend to need a smoothing down after retrieving them. Also, do you have a video on dying a white feather instead of splicing to get different colors? This would also be interesting and I appreciate the videos you've made.
Yes once I'm finished the feather splices interlock with each other as if they were from the same feather. It has a lot to do with the quality of the feathers that you are using to start with and the care in separating pieces when cutting the splices.
I was just curious about the price of such a detailed hand fletched arrow, I'm afraid they would be too beautiful for me to shoot! I'm hard on the little plastic fletchings!
I use True Flight, Gateway and AMG depending on the colors I am splicing. For this kind of splicing I've found that Gateway and AMG are easier to work with because the quill is left a little thicker than on True Flight feathers. Though if you take your time you can splice True Flight feathers just as good.
You are very welcome. Yes expect some nicks when you first start out but you will get the hang of it in short order so there won't be too much blood lost.....;-)
Hello, my name is Johnnie Cash. I was splicing by just chopping the sections of fletching and shoving them into my clamp. I see the error of my ways now. I was getting frustrated with them not lining up right with the contour of the helical. This solves my issue...
That depends on a lot of things. Could be the glue you are using or maybe not enough glue. Splices aren't as strong as unspliced feathers and you will have some fall out form time to time depending on a lot of factors. If they are falling out during the first couple of shots, then it is likely a gluing problem.
I am having the issue within the first 100 shots or so they are falling out. I love to make them and they are beautiful arrows. I will just have to keep practicing :) thanks for the help
TrueBowArcher The smaller the splice the more likely they will fall or be ripped out. 100 shots isn't great though but I've never counted. I generally save my pretty arrows for shoots and practice with some plain janes that are built to the same specs. You might try a different type of glue to see if that helps.
When I was still building arrows I was getting most of my feathers in bulk from Ebay. I forget the Ebay Seller I was using but they were not name brand feathers.
Very cool...until watching this I hadn't even thought about making my own arrows...Now I'll have to find out more. Thanks!!
Let me know if you have any questions and also I have videos on building arrows from start to finish here on UA-cam.
AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS I SPLICING FEATHERS PROPERLY .THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME THE WAY. YOU ARE EXCEPTIONALLY GIFTED.TU AGAIN.
Love the technique! I was able to achieve great results using your method on my first try splicing. Thanks for all the help!
Awesome, glad the video helped!!
I've seen Feathers made before but this is an amazing technique. Wow! thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Glad you liked the video!!
This is the best video on how to do this I've found! Thank you for allowing me to make the most fancy arrows :)
So glad you like the video and that it helped you.
So glad you made it!
I can just point to your video instead of explaining whenever people ask how I made my arrows. (i.imgur.com/4uOeQWW.jpg)
The arrows are beautiful; however your artistry with feathers is unreal.
Thanks for your video
Thank you!!
That is awesome. Those turned out really nice. Thanks for the video.
You are very welcome and Thanks!!!
Compliments, very nice feathers!!!

amazing skill!... you make it look so easy!..sending you love from the uk :)x
Thank you very much from over the pond!! Lots and lots of practice to get good.

As I understand it: they may actually be stronger shafts.....and stiffer with the walnut (similarly to carbon). I can see it both ways though.
GREAT VIDEO! I am just starting out with doing my own fletching and this was so helpful!
I'm glad it helped!! Give me a shout if you have any questions.

These feathers are HOT. Nice video and love the intro music!
Thanks!!!

I like how you also show some mistakes one is BOUND to make the first time and how to prevent/correct them.
Yes no matter how many feathers you splice there are going to be some mistakes. I seem to make most of my mistakes when I'm trying to make a video......LOL

great, this makes this video more valuable for us! Keep it up, love your work.

great video, i was thinking about a feather that was black\ blue\ black\ blue\ then the rest black again lol
extremely helpful video. thank you
Glad it helped!!
Well Done. Congratulations!!! I have a question: What kind glue? Please?
Thanks and I always use Bohning Fletch-Tite Platinum glue.
@@BountyHunterOutdoorAdventures Ok. Much Obliged friend.
@@Horsebows You are very welcome!!
Good Job !!!
Thanks!!
Awesome job.
Thanks you!!
That’s amazing!!!
Thanks
Great video mate!
+Colin Gair Thank you.

Great lesson. Thanks.
Thanks Daniel, glad you liked it.
Great video brother! Where do you buy your whole feathers? Will this work for right wing using a helical clamp?
awesome! I'm splicing next weekend
wow thank you for the video
You are very welcome!!
SUPER VIDEO!!!
Thanks!!
Thanks, glad you liked it and hope it helps you out.

Where do you get the feathers. I've been wanting to experiment with fixing my arrows and this is a great tutorial. Thank you
Do you use any glue where the different colors join to help the feather lay straight?
Great job!
Very cool. Thanks
Thanks and glad you liked!!
These are beautiful no doubt about it, but how do they hold up? Also how much would you charge for an arrow like this?
Hi Ron, when done right spliced feathers will hold up just as good as any feather. I'm out of the arrow building business, sorry.
I was just curious about the price of such a detailed hand fletched arrow, I'm afraid they would be too beautiful for me to shoot! I'm hard on the little plastic fletchings!
I was charging $250 for a set of carbon arrows and $350 for a set of wood arrows like these.
After watching your video,
I will buy them pre made if I want a multi colored Fletch.
I understand, but I will have to say after just a little practice you can do this pretty easily so don't under estimate yourself.
I use True Flight, Gateway and AMG depending on the colors I am splicing. For this kind of splicing I've found that Gateway and AMG are easier to work with because the quill is left a little thicker than on True Flight feathers. Though if you take your time you can splice True Flight feathers just as good.
What do you do if you can't get the skin to pull off the quill? The quill keeps breaking like it's all brittle. Is there any way to soften the quill?
You are very welcome. Yes expect some nicks when you first start out but you will get the hang of it in short order so there won't be too much blood lost.....;-)
You make it look easy, but I know it's not. Thanks for the lesson.
this is cool!
Excellent Video, makes sense now. I spliced some for a dozen arrows before this video and they came out far from what I see here.
where do you get your feathers from
What kind of feathers do you use?
Thanks and I hope the video helped if you give it a try.

Awesome, let me know if there is any way I can give you a hand.
Great, taking your time and lots of practice and your splices will look as good as mine. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Where do you get the feathers
amazing,thanks you!!!
Good luck and let me know how it goes!!!
@jonneyj hope it helped you with your splicing. When you get done with your feathers send me a picture at bhtamail@verizon.net
I am having the issue that the splices are falling out. Any suggestions?

Still not making arrows ?
Yes, I'm still not making arrow because I'm tournament bass fishing. As much as I love archery, bass fishing has always been my true passion.
Thanks!!!
Black, white and neon green. I will take 36 please sir!
+gblan Sorry, I'm no longer selling arrows and feathers.
Thanks
And I thought I spent a lot of time on my arrows, lol.
Yes, they were very time consuming.
Would be better if the music did not compete with your verbal directions
@shbmw2 Thanks!!!!
Sorry the hear about your finger. Hope it wasn't cut too badly!!!
What brand of feather do you use ?
When I was still building arrows I was getting most of my feathers in bulk from Ebay. I forget the Ebay Seller I was using but they were not name brand feathers.
