- Crafting an Hourglass (Sand timer) by hand today. This device was used to track time in the past before the invention of the modern clock. Done by creating a narrow neck to delay the flow of sand from one side of the vessel to the other. The amount of time can vary depending on the Neck diameter, Sand grain size, and volume of the Vessel.

Hello, I'm Matt Jasa. If you are interested in learning about Glass blowing or Lamp working my channel offers a lot of advice on the techniques, tools, and general safety. Make Artistic pieces (animals, marbles, pendants), scientific items, and blown functional glass. Put your mind to it and with practice you can make anything!
Some more specific projects you might find on this channel are Glass Chain Necklaces, Glass Pendants, Marbles, Magnifying Glasses, Glass on Glass Fittings ( GonG ) and Blown Spheres. I also use small explosives from time to time for scientific tests; however these explosive projects should never be attempted at home, safety is my highest precaution! Never attempt glass blowing without proper ventilation and eye protection.

Never store your propane in-doors, Always keep propane tanks outside! Propane gas is heavier then air, if a leak occurs it will begin to pool and fill a closed room or basement which can lead to an explosion.

Studio Setup: Bethlehem Bravo Main-torch, GGT Bobcat Hand-torch, Invacare oxygen concentrator setup variable 10 LPM to 30lpm at 9psi. Ventilation hood with 12" 1000+cfm exhaust fan. 50 Watts LED hood lighting. Eye Protection of Shade 3 and 5 (face mask) UV protection along with dydinium glasses to block sodium flare.
recommended borosilicate glass sizes: Blowtube = 12mm (2mm wall), Small tube = 26mm(4mm wall), Large tube = 38mm (4mm wall). Also ~9mm solid rods
Frit: Extra caution must be taken when working with Frit. The dangers of inhaling glass dust may lead to the lung disease silicosis. Even medium and large size Frit may contain large amounts of glass dust from the sifting process. The tumbling action in the sifter may leave a charged force in the glass causing dust to cling to it. I don't recommend Frit use for beginners.

Use extra caution when working with Frit, you don't want to inhale glass dust! Also for 'Sealing Vessels' the best and safest method I recommend is to use a clear epoxy or glue. Avoid reheating sealed vessels as they could explode.
Ha ha, just two days ago I was trying to work out in my head how I'd go about making an hour glass. Hadn't thought of making a bridge to stabilize while condensing the throat

Thank you! It does take a lot of time condensing it down instead of tooling. But it does get extra thick and slightly magnifies the falling sand.

When you seal up the vessel are you bringing it up to temp in the kiln first or just going in cold because of the frit?
Sorry if I didn't explain the process well, it is a bit confusing. I'm going in cold not for the Frit but the air inside the vessel. The air expands as its heated causing it to escape the vessel. So preheating and sealing the vessel will give me a Net-Loss of air. When it cools and contracts to its original volume there will be less air inside causing negative pressure.
Do you use store bought glass or home made glass like using quartz sand to make it? Which type of glass would you think works best?
I mostly work with Borosilicate and have it shipped from an online store. The sand is glass Frit color triple passion from glass alchemy, that's where it gets its deep orange.

Just wonderinng. Is closing the hole, after you put in the sand in, by adding glass any different or easier?
Great question! If you add glass to seal it before you heat the air inside then it won't change in pressure as it cools. It might gain a slightly negative pressure as the 'added glass' cools and contracts. The best method to avoid the problem is just to seal it with some glue or clear epoxy, that's probably what I would do If i were to sell these.

Is there a way you can make your Glass Science sign fumed on the inside? Don't get me wrong, I think the metallic look we see is very cool, but the different color changes that come from the metals would be really beautiful. Just a wandering thought passing briefly through my brain.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it :D.The outside could be fumed, It might be difficult to fume the inside. Shaking around some metal heavy frit inside might give it a little fuming color.
How long did it take for you to make this hourglass?

Hourglass or half minute glass
True it's not a full hour, but "Hour Glass" is the most recognizable name for the search engine. I'll make my next one run a full hour and then rename this one to "Sand Timer"
