I had just dumped an entire crockpot down the drain. 🤦🏻♀️ I think the trick is doing it immediately. After I called my husband in a panic, I frantically began searching and tried the first thing I found on YT, which was this video, and BOOM - it worked!
How funny I literally just googled how to disinfect my sink for unwanted pests like drain flies and this was the same recipe and process. Good to know for any accidental grease spills too.
This works but I did one thing differently. Start out by putting a whole box of baking soda down the drain then wash that baking soda down with a gallon of white vinegar. That way the white vinegar and baking soda get down there undiluted. It's even best if you have a slow drain to let it drain out as much as possible. Then follow with a huge pot of boiling water. Wait about 15 minutes and put another bottle of baking soda and vinegar down the drain and then flush with two boiling hot pots of water. I've lived in this house for 26 years and this is the first thing that has ever worked other than calling the plumber.
Yes, creating CO2 fizzing which gives a warm feeling of accomplishment and little else. With this method the only bit you're going to be getting clean is the water trap immediately under the sink anyway, not beyond, so you may as well just detach it and clean it properly or you may be simply moving a slug of grease to a less accessible part of the drain. Just baking soda would be more effective - or a proper sodium hydroxide drain cleaner.
