Vagabond is an incredibly moving, haunting, and beautiful journey that I'm grateful to have made. As it explores Musashi's development, it bestows on the reader a sense of connection with the heavens and the earth too. Thank you, Merphy, for all the amazing discussions that enriched this experience so much for me!
Is the series all just artwork. I feel like people clown on say demon slayer for being MID and carried by animation. Not something I say or agree with but the artwork looks great in vagabond. My question is if it works its way up to such high scores because its executed so well (which I like) vs being mind-blowingly unique (which I think is a dumb take to have but people use it (dumb in that most stories are done already and the ones that are not are too weird for general audiences)) also is it deep philosophy and character drama that is basically equivalent to other stories with less artwork. I know shonen gets hit hard for not being deep but they just breaze through the deep parts since their fans complain for slow sections (chainsawman part 2).
@@nichescenes i know this is 11 months late sorry. Vagabond is more than just it's artwork i love it's execution of ideas such as freedom, strength, rigidity and connection. However i will say the artwork is important as it is one of the only manga's i have read that i felt the artwork HUGELY impact the way i saw characters, scenes and emotions, basically if would never be as good if it were just a novel as the artwork adds so much to it. The story is also quite deep as i feel the connection between Kojiro and Musashi is fantastic and the comparisons to water and earth respectively in the farming arc is one of the most amazing things I've ever read
i read vagabond through when you said you were gonna start it and the parts about human connection were so beautiful. the farming and by the sea arcs being my favourite for that reason, with the old man by the sea (Jisai maybe?) being my favourite character. He was so human, so flawed but how connecting with others brought him back from the brink, from his lowest point was really moving. And i think my favourite scene without spoiling was when another character tells Jisai he hasn't noticed something about another person because he only thinks of himself and the anguish he feels, like he's failed this person was so real and believable i really felt it myself.

Vagabond is absolutely incredible! If you haven’t gotten into it yet, I highly recommend Naoki Urasawa’s work. Both, Monster and 20th Century Boys, are incredible stories to get into!
Your " flow " descriptions in Vagabond have me completely sold! Hearing you beautifully articulate the additional themes and depth to the story is like icing on the cake. Excellent analysis, Merphy! ❤
For people that loves this manga, I highly recomendo getting the Musashi trilogy from Eiji Yoshikawa. For people that loves Japanese culture, it's probably one of the best reads ever. It's a slow read, and it's big, but so good. It is the inspiration for Vagabond and one of the most important historical romances from Japan.
Vagabond is one of the first manga series i've read and it's one of my favorites. The quiet tone in tune with nature and all that introspection and growth is so moving and yet relaxing to me :D
Hey Merphy, did you know that Vagabond is based on an 1500-something page epic novel about Miyamoto Musashi's life? Would love it if you reviewed it too!
@@rehanzaheer21 Thanks! Even though I haven't finished Musashi yet, I got a copy of "Taiko" by the same author which gives the same treatment to the life of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Reading Vagabond, you can really feel how much of himself Inoue put into his work. I draw a lot and I have done many master studies of his inks and watercolors and tried to imitate some of his design ideas in my own stuff. and I can surely say that the level of love and care he put into his work is unmatched. thank you for reading and reviewing this masterpiece. seeing your manga journey has been an absolute blast and I hope you get to read more artistically sophisticated works like Berserk, Shigurui and Goodnight Punpun. these are some of the best examples of visual storytelling and it’ll be awesome to hear your thoughts on them.
It is crazy to me that my high school library had several volumes of this series. I remember reading them and being impressed by the art but had the name of the series. Thanks for reminding me Murphy 💜
Similar to Berserk and Vagabond, I'd love for you to read Kingdom. Its a story about the warring states of China. Great characters, great politics and unique to Kingdom, the strategies of war. The main character feels very similar to Zoro and he has a goal of being one of the Great 6 Generals of China. It's my favorite series after One Piece. The only issue is that there has never been an official release in english so it is all online scans. If that isn't a deal breaker I'm sure you will love the series .
Man I canNOT wait to bite into this. First heard about it from one of my HS students and then on some "best of" manga vids. Working through Pluto (and maybe Monster) before this one. But I've already stocked up on the first 5 Vizbig volumes
One of my favorite pieces of art ever, I just loved how expressive the art is, so much so that it felt like one of the most dense literary experiences I've felt despite being so devoid of words. I'd love to see you're thoughts on Oyasumi Punpun (or Goodnight Punpun) too, they feel very similar to me even tho surface level there aren't many similarities except the maturity I guess.
I'm really happy you went through Vagabond! I read it about 7 years ago and the amazing thing about it is the peace it brings to your demons. Your video gave me the same feeling. Thank you for that.
Been wanting to read this series for awhile alongside Berserk. Between this, Berserk and Vinland Saga (the seinen Big Three of sorts), it’s kind of depressing to know only Vinland Saga is still going (with the original author). I’ve heard good things about Berserk and the new author, I trust that, I just haven’t gotten around to reading the series properly. Same goes for Vagabond which is even sadder because I train in martial arts and my school covers Musashi’s sharpened oar. I think I’ll start on it today.
I don’t know how much you know about the new author, but he was Miura’s best friend and the only one who intimately understands how the series ends. He’s also an accomplished mangaka in his own right (holyland is good I recommend you give it a shot. Not S tier like the others but a solid A- for me).
I've been thinking about reading it for a while, I love your one piece reviews (im currently in fish-man island) and to see that you think highly of this series is good enough for me to give it a try :)
I first read this series around 13 years ago while I still in high school and I remember how Musashi's search for purpose struck a cord with me. It's been a long time since I've read it so I wonder what my feelings will be this time. Regardless, I do remember how beautiful the art and story was
i had all the volumes for almost 2 yrs now, and read a volume and a half and i knew this series deserves my full attention that's why am saving it for the perfect time to read it :')
The novel by Eiji Yoshikawa on which this manga is based is also amazing, and also tells the full story right to the end. A long read though at 1,000 pages. The Samurai Trilogy also tells the story and is well regarded and well done.
The farming arc was my favorite in Vagabond; at first the series fools people with action but it's just a story about coming to terms with yourself and whatever it is you want from life
I was re-reading it along with you, but got busy in mid March and you both passed me. I gotta catch up with manga and then catch up with your videos This is just a beautiful manga, both visually and otherwise It is based on a book, would you ever read that one? I hope you watch Mushishi too someday, you'll enjoy it
I just came back from vacation in Tunis. I met ex coworker over there he is Tunisian (I am Lithuanian) and we two people from different cultures had a nice conversation about Miyamoto Musashi. We both have read his book 'The book of 5 rings' and we both read Vagabond. For me it is just amazing that this manga from Japan and this story could bond 2 people from different cultures and continents :). P.S great review Merphy!
There is hope though cause the author Takehiko Inoue said in a interview last year or early this year said he might come back to complete Vagabond so don't lose hope.
Once I started Vagabond I knew I would have to read nonstop until I caught up because of how great it was to me. From the artwork, struggles/fights within the characters themselves besides the badass swordplay which is wicked too but the characters stuck out to me more than anything readng through it plus awesome to see you caught up like the rest of us with no ending insight but one day maybe lol
I know it didn't make your list, but I would seriously recommend Goodnight Punpun. It's a bit of a hidden gem but honestly it is one of the few stories that I feel eclipses Vagabond
I've been really meaning to read this manga, and not just because Musashi is one of my favorite historical figures in Japanese history. The first is Rioma Sakamoto if y'all we're wondering
You should read Inoue's other work, "Real". I really love Vagabond but I consider Real his best work and it is such a visceral and raw story that mixes a lot of elements from Vagabond along with Inoue's love for basketball.
You've been doing Vinland Saga and Vagabond, but you gotta do Berserk Merphy. It may be too dark for your liking, but Guts is one of the best protagonists you'll ever get to know. Same with the antagonist too

03:34 Inoue sensei said its almost done.. I ve watched an interview of him recently. Its an old one though. He was saying its almost finished. I mean whats left is Musashi to forgive himself and that usually would happen after he fights Kojiro.. Thats my take on it. And I dont want it to be finished to be honest. As it is its complete already and anyone can draw a conclusion from it i guess. I mean it opens a path to so many conclusions because we read and understand things quite differently.. (Still i would be super happy to see more of Inoues drawing and philosophy)
By Takehiko Inoue, please read Slam Dunk. The story sounds pretty stupid. A group of "bullies" in Japan find themselves playing basketball together. Very childish at times, it is an amazing sports/friendship related manga. I never cared about basketball but Slam Dunk made me love the sport. (I read this as a teenager)
