  • After more than two decades of uninterrupted rule, is the tide turning in Turkey? President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threw all the weight of his AKP party behind a bid to unseat Istanbul’s charismatic mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. Instead, the possible presidential contender extended his gains in Sunday’s local elections.

Great programme and great analysis by guests. (1) Yusuf Erim is a government (thus Erdogan's) employee and spokesman, so his views are heavily biased and thus irrelevant here. (2) Provinces where CHP has won local elections produce more than 70% of Turkish GDP, meaning that AKP has lost the economic heartland of Turkiye. (3) I agree with Mr. Mortimer's words that despite such authoritarian atmosphere of the past 15 years, elections still produce results not to the liking of an authoritarian government; thus, this speaks well for the Turkish democracy, or democratic aspirations of the population at large.

btw, Yusuf Erim says, not surprisingly, the government did well in handling the problems arising from the earthquake. That's not TRUE. The limited new-built houses were given to the AKP supporters, especially religious groups, even though they were not in need. That's why the CHP won in Adiyaman, the centre of the religious group called Menzil. In short, the AKP failed to solve the problems concerning the earthquake.

Istanbul Mayer Mr. Ekrem Imamoglu was running Istanbul without holding majority seats in chamber since 5 years , which was kept by presidents party AKP . Therefore the Mayor couldn’t pass any changes that he originally intended. However now CHP party member Mr. Ekrem imamoglu not only he won Mayer position in Istanbul , he also took majority seats in chamber. This change happened in nearly all council chambers across the Turkey. Therefore CHP party will have control of 80% economy within the country. I believe this significant lost will push President in uncharted territory.

Thanks for the nice program. However acknowledge that one of the panel members (Mr Yusuf Erim) is from TRT and TRT is not famous in being unbiased especially when it comes to political info&data due to their direct connect with the government (AKP). So I think Mr Erim’s comments were also biased a bit but relatively he seemed much more objective compared to his peers in TRT. Final point thanks to Mr Jasper about all his feedback which mostly reflects the current atmosphere and reality however its a very strong statement which I think far from truth about the Kurds in Istanbul all voted to Imamoglu besides DEM Party as Erdogan is still very popular among those whıch are highly conservative.

To be honest, I am happy that we won against him. What makes me doubt is the attitude of other countries towards this situation. Turkey has a great location for trade, tourism and unfortunately for wars. Erdogan is keeping the balance between Russia and the US. I also like his international policy, even though I hate his approach and rhetoric towards citizens who support the other side. Other countries like Europe and the US (I definitely mean the leaders, not the citizens) seem to be pro-democracy for Turkey, but I don't believe it. They just want a sympathetic leader to rule us easily in the name of peace, democracy or welfare. Just like Ukraine or Arab countries.

Unlike Turkey that's using only the foreign American nukes through the NATO sharing and can't ever use them without the codes from Washington DC. Any type of such games vs France, UK, USA, Russia or China are highly dangerous for a lower level power such as Turkey. Turkey could maybe play such games vs Italy or Spain. Certainly not vs France.
