I stopped buying Glendronach and that won´t change unless they return to their former policy.
    Case closed.

I see a lot of new Glendronach in the stores. My local whisky shop happens to still have the older versions. But like you I won't support the changes they have made by buying up the old ones. I will know doubt finish the ones I do have. lol. I've been lucky enough to get the Kilkerran 12 Springbank 10 and 15 so I will just keep purchasing those at my shop and online. Great video.

I stopped buying Glendronach too Alan. When sherry, than I buy for instance Glenfarclas, especially the GF 15 (46%) and 18 (43%), and of course the dangerous dram (12 yo).

Yes, I stopped Glendronch also after the labeling change. I have heard the claim that they havnt changed anything in the production and it was to do with markets and standard labeling.... which I find odd and nonsense. If you haven't changed anything or plan to ( fair enough) but then you didn't need to change the label !! For me, GD12 been one replacement along with Tamdhu and also Arran 18 which is one of my favourites. Plenty of others out there, do not going to miss out...

Always found the GD15 one dimensional (controversial) but I never got to taste the older bottlings. Myself I tried a few side by side and find Tamdhu 15, Glenallachie 15, Arran 18 amd Glen Garioch 15 somewhat more interesting. Edradour stands out on its own and is outstanding! That said Glendronach 18 remains the top of the pile, but stopped buying that for obvious reasons 😁 but I have a few left...

I have two left of the old 18 and 3 of the old 15. Depends on the mood I would go for the 15 or the 18. I think for pure sherry power I’d go for the old 15. More nuanced the 18. Btw the Tamdhu 15 is very good. Closer to the 18 Dronach . I have 12 yr old Edradour unopened and I believe I’ll be doing that one soon. Great video.

Great topic Alan! I'm been disappointed with Glendronach since Brown Forman took over, so this is a really timely review. GlenAllachie 12 and 15, Tamdhu Cask strength and 15, and the Signatory versions of Edradour are a few favorite richly sherried drams I can recommend.

When I want a GlenDronach fix, I tend to go for the Bunnahabhain 12. Even though I find plenty of differences between them on the nose and palate I do get the same “feeling” on the finish… it’s difficult to explain but it is that old cask sherry note on the finish I pick up in both

Great video, Alan. I did a “dram along.” I have an inferior Edradour, so left that out. And my Arran 18 is the older bottling. All three that I’m having are so nice, but the Arran 18 is the winner for me.

Good idea for a video alan. Thought you would have put the Glenallachie 15the lineup? I have also voted with my money to move on from Glendronach. Had already made that choice as the years with much older casks in the mix had passed but there choice to remove NCF from the label made it firm. Lots of other wonderful whisky out there so not getting this or the fantastic Springbank and Kilkerran that have become so difficult for the opposite reasons because they are so well made. AnCnoc, Benromach, Edradour, Speyburn(15) are distillery bottles I am able to get for good value and independent bottlings are an excellent choice if you have a good source that is consistently bringing in good picks. Cheers Alan

Hi Alan, actually still got an unopened Glendronach 15 that I bought around 2015, so haven’t had tasted the 15 yet 🤔. The Glendronach 18 and 12 bought around three years ago. Not on purpose but it seems like I’ve mainly bought Glen Allachie, the 12, 12 year old Madeira finished, the 15 and a couple of samples from the CS batch 3. Like these videos Alan, Doon the hatch.

If you bought the GlenDronach 15 in 2015 it might be a Billy Walker bottling and not a Rachael Barrie. If so you’ve got something special and nowadays unique. Good for you!

that Glendronach 15 (2015) is the very bottle that changed my life David, your in for something special when you open that one, the difference between that one (2015) and the new ones were older stocks and both px and oloroso casks ....the new revival does not have both casks....enjoy that one when you crack it sir.....

I wonder if the Glen Allachie 15 might have lifted it higher in the order? I have not bought any more Glendronach, and I have not missed it as much as I expected because as you have proved, there are so many really good options out there. The Glendronach price increases just re-inforce the decision.

I also have not purchased a Glendronach since they made the change. When I want a sherried malt I always have Glenallachie, Glenfarclas, and Tamdhu on my shelves. Others like Bunnahabhain, Glengoyne, and Aberlour show up from time to time.

  • @Bob-ts2tu
    @Bob-ts2tu 2 роки тому

It's great to see that someone thinks the same as myself as far as GD 15 goes Alan. The old GD15 bottling was my nirvana of scotch, and whilst i know the old stocks couldnt last forever, everything glendronach since 2018 has been on a downward trajectory, and like you i've stopped buying it. The 'new' 15 feels a tad thinner, but maybe had i not had the 'old' revival then would possibly think it stands up ok on it's own, but sadly it will always be a disappointment now, and the big increase in price didn't help. I've had glenallachie 15 which billy walker is getting there. I recently bought Kavalan sherry oak (which has a lovely smooth the sherry hit) and is surprisingly good for such a young dram. I tried the arran bodega sherry cask, and although i'm an arran fan it just didn't quite cut it for me, and am yet to try the arran 18 or glenallachie 12 which are on my list. I did buy the GD 18 for a while and enjoyed it, but it's been out of stock everywhere for ages, and i understand will have yet another price hike when it returns so there will be no rush there. BTW i have one bottle of the pre 2015 revival i've been keeping for a special day !!. thanks for the review

    Very nice video, Alan!
I haven't had the opportunity to taste the Glendronach 15, but have some experience with the proposed alternatives :)
I have a bottle of Arran 18, still waiting its turn. Currently I'm making my way down a bottle of Glenallachie 12 (2020 release) and a bottle of Edradour 10 (vintage 2009). Both are very, very fine drams but I prefer Glenallachie slightly more. I find it more interesting and complex. When it comes to Edradour I'd take the 12 yo Caledonia over the 10 yo from Signatory. Again, because of the little more complexity.
I noticed that you found Glenallachie and Glendronach very similar. Well, I guess it is due to grand master Billy Walker's touch. Yes, the recent Revival is done by Dr. Rachel Barrie but still I believe the main profile has staid the same more or less. Plus the new Revival has ex-PX in the blend, the same as Glenallachie. BTW I think Glenallachie 15 should be even closer to Revival because it lacks the virgin oak casks.
As I said I haven't had the Revival but when it comes to rich sherried drams I'm fortunate enough to have access to pretty solid offers in Bulgaria. Just to name a few: Edradour 12 Caledonia (~50 euros), Glenallachie 12 (~34 euros), Glenallachie 15 (~50 euros), Glenallachie 10 Cask Strength (~50 euros, the last batch to have made it to our market is #6). Currently Arran 18 and Edradour 10 from Signatory are sold out but I hope some stock to be imported before too long.
We also have some Tamdhu and Glengoyne but they are overpriced and not worth the money IMHO.
    Cheers!

I haven't seen the new Arran 18 yet but it's really hard not to make the switch to Glenallachie. Seems pretty natural to follow Billy over there.
I know if the Signatory Edradour is even a fair comparison cause mine's a little funky.
Right now I'm trying scratch the sherry itch with a CS Kavalan

This weekend I stumbled upon a case of Glendronach 15 (bottled 8/1/2019). At $79 per bottle I snatched them up since it’s a non-chill filtered version and a tasty batch. Now I mostly see the new chill filtered versions, which I have no interest in buying. I did buy a new chill filtered 18 year allardice though (just as a place holder so I don’t go through my older, non-chill filtered batches as quickly). It’s decent but the mouth feel is way more watery than before. Plus it’s younger juice. The other ones had deliciously peaked at 24 years old. Such a shame, Glendronach. They were on pace to supplant Macallan in terms of decadent juice. But now they’ve sold their souls to the Chinese. Pathetic! Slainte, Alan!

Good score! After the shelves were void in 2019 I started seeing the 2020 NCF and natural color ones hitting the shelves last year at $90, then came the Chill filtered drama.

I don’t know Alan. Seems a little sketchy that you moved Glendronach from 2 to 3 late game. I hope you weren’t trying to preserve your anti- Glendronach narrative. Let’s say it tied for 2nd. Given that the winner is 2x the price, I still say G15 is a damn fine dram. I do want to try the Edradour now though.
