NO WAY. I had no idea that Sparks was the singer in one of my favorite animator’s videos. They were around me all this time and I had no idea

@@coalkingryan881 It took YEARS before Sparks' audience, particular the British, realized they are American.
I guess it's now commonly known, after all commotion the last years. (A minor success with the collaboration with Franz Ferdinand Ferdinand 2015, 2017 their album 'Hippopotamus' reached no.7 on the British album list. This album 'A Steady Drip Drip Drip' was also a big success. (Then the pandemic came... Everything postponed)
2021 Edgar Wright's documentary about them, 'The Sparks Brothers', made movie starved (after the pandemic) people went and watch it, even if they hadn't heard of them before, and became curious, listened and became fans.
Later the same year their movie 'Annette' (directed by Leos Carax) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. It won the 'Best Director' prize, and then a whole bunch of other prizes, 'Best Original Music ' etc.
Then, the album after this one, 'The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte' came out in May this year (2023), they began the tour with a couple of spread out gigs in the USA, then toured The USA, and a concert in Canada during late winter and spring. Took a week off, and played around Europe for about two months (TWO nights at the Royal Albert Hall!), and took a short rest again.
Did a couple of more gigs in the USA, one night a dream of theirs came true: Hollywood Bowl!
A couple of months off, then they went to Japan, doing two concerts in October, finished the tour in Australia, three concerts. One in the famous Sydney Opera House. They finished the tour at November 2 in Brisbane.
Remember, these gentlemen made their FIRST recording on January 7, 1967, in a "rent by hour" studio in LA. One of the songs, the EXTREMELY ahead of time song 'Computer Girl', psychedelic, amateurish, and superb, can be found on YT.
The first released album named 'Halfnelson' (their name at the time) came in 1971, they were a full band at the time, re-issued a year later as 'Sparks'. Since it sold close to zero they were strongly advised to change their name. Didn't sell any better 😅. 1973 the ball started to roll, they went to England to do a couple of gigs and TV shows.
After that only Ron and Russell were offered to come to England and put together an English band, and make a record. They did. May 1974, 'Kimono My House'. MAJOR success! In November they released the follow up, 'Propaganda'. That year they conquered Europe, however their homeland took another couple of years.
That became a little more than I had meant to write, sorry!

The song is about am old man who spent his whole life fearing a vague, ever-present “existential threat” believing people living normal lives are stupid for not fearing it, even though the true existential threat was wasting his whole life in fear.
Hmmm ... or maybe he sees the undeniable truth, and the only thing he is lacking is an ability to moderate those negative thoughts. I mean, we are in a climate crisis, a plastic crisis, an international war, etc, etc. It's not all rosy. And at least a few of these crises are definitely going to affect literally everyone on this planet, whether they know about it or not.

@@stereomaster5490 Ha! We used to joke that the more you know the worse things seem. Like climate scientists suffering depression. AKA: ignorance is bliss. But if you can learn to manage all the resulting negative emotions, knowing how bad things are doesn't have to destroy you. But if the earth has turned into a pacman and is chasing you like in this video, then yes I'd say it's probably time to get help!
@@uazuazu I "cured"my depression by just ignoring everything, even emotions, i mean what can you do about dead people and alcoholic parents. Life is beatiful dude, no matter what, and if it doesnt seem like that to you, its just really up to you
@@stereomaster5490 The thing is to understand that we can engineer our own state of mind and experience of reality. This means that we remain in control, and we get to choose how we feel. What you described is a valid technique. I can find the place where life is beautiful, but it's my nature that I also see a lot of the darkness. Having the option to switch between optimistic and pessimistic world-views can be useful. I have never suffered clinical depression, though, so that's a whole other thing. But this video is funny to me because it's like "no, no, no, you're doing it all wrong". The negative thoughts aren't the problem. It's how he's managing it. My son can get into a similar catastrophic mind-set. The way out of that is humour showing him how it makes no sense to take things so far, and how to shift to a more positive mental state. Basically, to learn that it's not useful to be in that state, and how to change it.
No one else could create such a song and no one else could create such a video ..... makes for the perfect combination 😁

I'm a Sparks fan, had honestly never heard of Cyriak, but when I saw the video I realized that I have seen artwork (or perhaps cuts from videos, I don't know) which I found really cool.
My point is that it's not a question about "knowing" about Cyriak and his work, it's about how your own mind and imagination are set.
I thought, from the first second, that this animation was the PERFECT video for this song!

I think that Shaw Petronio is on something in his videos for 'Perfume', 'Lighten Up Morrissey' and 'Dick Around'.
Also 'Kuntzel and Deygas' have made a couple of classic ones, 'I Married Myself', 'The Rhythm Theif', 'The Calm Before the Storm' and an amazing instrumental version of 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us'!!

To be fair, in the 80s nearly every toaster did come with a VHS renderer by default; it's just forgotten nowadays and that surely has led to some rather bizzare accidents...
Aah I had no doubts storyboarding would get a mention in this. For Cyriak's work that's gotta be like the most crucial step I'm sure! He animates as if straight from the brain: a skill of talented animators who've gotten the most accustomed with their workspace, tools, and format.
Thank you Cyriak for introducing me to this amazing band, Sparks has quickly become my all time favorite. And of course, than you Ron and Russel for making such great music over the years
I know the version of this on Cyriak's channel has way more views but man, being a Cyriak fan and not knowing anything about Sparks for sure has gotten you a new listener :P Honestly it was a great move to stretch out and allow Cyriak to share his audience on this, would have missed on a great Cyriak animation and new song (which gets stuck in my head from time to time) if I didn't see this 2 years ago on my sub list.
I wish I had the patience to put in half the amount of effort you put into your videos.

The progression in this song sounds like the kind used in many TMBG songs such as in “Till My Head Falls Off” and the bridge in “You’re On Fire”.
As an artist, this is the best music+visual combo I've ever seen, it's so incredibly great.

One thing we need urgently to do at this time is to end the fashion of using the phrase "existential threat" and get back to reading existentialism.
The government, corporations, regulators and institutions keep you in control by keeping you in a constant state of fear. When we are afraid, we don't think straight and we are willing to accept almost anything that will take the threat away.
