Beautiful lakes, mountain vistas, nature trails, and recreational opportunities abound in Flathead County. Located in Northwestern Montana just 2 hours south of Canada, the county is referenced as the gateway to Glacier National Park and the famous Going to the Sun Road.
Flathead County covers just over 5,000 square miles with a population that recently surpassed 100,000 and continues to grow. Flathead Valley boasts an airport, Amtrak station, 2 ski resorts, 8 golf courses, mountain bike trails, cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails, over 269 lakes and reservoirs, campgrounds, diverse wildlife, fishing, hunting, and more. It’s easy to see why this county draws new residents every year.
But, is it the right location for you and your family? Thank you so much for this video. I've been researching moving to this area (from SE Ohio actually) for about six months now, and this video gave me a good bit of insider perspective I hadn't found yet!

Yes it is full of discoveries. If you like hiking, lake life, horses, ranches and rough ranchers living on the land. Gardening season a bit short, fruit from Washington state, organic produce, and sometimes a discouraging word from sour people who are here, but transported from discouraging states and do not appreciate the land and its beauty. Disregard them. It’s a pioneers road, but worth it.

Park astounding and great grandeur. Ex-military family and returned back after many moves elsewhere cannot be compared. Cold winters and great summers. Jobs hard to find and discourages people. Walk in faith and He will provide it is God’s Country.

I was born in Sonoma county California and moved to Montana when I was five years old and I quickly learned to love Montana. I noticed other people moving to Montana from California after me and they didn't respect what Montana has to offer. A lot of them are/were trying to change the culture to resemble California more and more. So, if you are thinking of moving to Montana from California you will need to change your mindset. Repeat after me, "When I was a Californian, I talked like a Californian, I thought like a Californian, and I reasoned like a Californian, but when I became a Montanan, I put away my Californian ways."
Could you elaborate? Usually when I hear people saying not to bring your CA ways with you, it's referring to inclusiveness and support for social programs.

Thanks to the influx of new residents, Montana will soon be out of most peoples’ price range. I’ve lived here all my life and have a plethora of family who can no longer purchase homes, despite having a post secondary education. Housing prices and cost of living continue to climb as more remote workers from California continue to price us out of our home state. This does a huge disservice to locals.
Sadly, true for the most popular cities of Montana. It's very hard to keep up with the rising cost of living here if this is where you've lived all your life. However, many who have owned property here for 20+ years are making bank with the increased value. A double edged sword for sure.

I lived here my whole life. cant help but feel sorry for people wanting to leave their shitholes, but I dont think my 14 yr old son will ever be able to buy his own house here. And my property taxes will be sky rocketing. Its sad it came to this. Its the doing of liberals ruining the country, then when things get bad turn tail running away, instead of fixing the mess they created. These people will be very unwelcome if they bring their liberal ways here.

Radiant Wanderings we live in Bend, Oregon and are exploring Kalispell area and Sandpoint, Idaho for a possible future move. The more we research Montana the more it appeals to us. Any advice on places that are a must see this time of the year there during a three day visit?
@@darren1601 definitely Glacier National Park ;p The road may be closed to the pass by the time you arrive but the colors are gorgeous and you should still be able to get to Lake McDonald and Bowman Lake and could do some of the hikes at the lower elevations. You described exactly my thoughts as to why I want to move mountains. Will retire from Army in another 7-8 years. Years ago visited with my wife and fell in love with region...including CDA ID, Rapid City SD, but most of all Montana.

I am from southern Indiana( evansville). We just got back from Flathead valley and loved it. A lot of the locals said the winters can be very grey and be gloomy sometimes. But that doesn’t seem to bother me do to the fact that the town will be covered in snow! My wife is just nervous about leaving her family.
I'm originally from Colorado. Moved to NC Montana 9 years ago. Since I was used to snow and cold temperatures, I didn't have to adjust much. My home is Parker CO was at 6500 ft above sea level so I had lots of snow. In my small area of Montana we need people with trades. Mechanics, plumbers, electricians. Dentists. In a way I'm glad you aren't promoting our area. Its already to hard to find a place to live with out paying city prices. Im living in a rv in Augusta (yes during the winter) because of the lack of housing. I will never move back to Colorado. I have the front range of the Rockies 6 miles away. My hope for the people moving here is that they leave their big city ways and ideas where they came from. Oh yea...we love guns and many weekends the sound of shooting fills the air. Open carry is the norm. We are the last vestige of the wild west. Please RESPECT us.

I moved to Montana for the outdoors but all I got was rain and snow. It's freezing here!!! I think there was about 3 weeks of sunshine this year and as soon as I can I'm headed south where I can at least see some blue sky. Spring is a non-starter. It rained and rained until July! I'm sorry but I can't take it any more. Good Luck to those who love the cold.

We’re not looking to move to Montana… I just have a sister who lives in Plains Montana, outside of Missoula, and that’s why I’ve watched a couple of these Montana videos lately… My husband and I live in Salt Lake area in Utah, and are staying put! Montana is beautiful! My sister has lived on a gigantic piece of property with her husband and her son, who now is living on his own with his girlfriend. Yes, lots of snow… And they have done lots of hunting, picked mushrooms for a living, along with picking berries to make money, cut wood for money, raise goats for money, lots of work!

Well, yes and no, about being a city girl! Actually I’m not a city girl at all! She and I were both raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia… She has lived in Montana for years, going to the University Montana Missoula in the pottery school and marrying a fellow in they became potters and moved to Washington state. Then she moved back and got married to another guy and had their son! No, I don’t get to visit her at all! She is really kind of a recluseThere are… Plus we don’t have a lot of money, and I haven’t had money to go up there, though I don’t know that she would’ve welcomed us. Very sad. Her husband is an alcoholic and they did not have a good marriage… I was a migrant farm worker with my ex-husband and traveled around the US for a few years! I’ve lived a lot of different places in the US and had a lot of different jobs not… Last living up in Alaska for 16 years, where I met my current husband. I had moved up to Alaska with my husband who is the migrant with me. Alaska was great, but I’m glad I pushed to get us out of there! Especially with us being older now! I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of latter day Saints up in Alaska, and wanted to be closer to the headquarters in Salt Lake… really glad we made the move! This is a good video. I hope to not just see downtown areas, but to get an idea of what other places of an area are like. I think one of the main things is knowing what the people are like/what it’s like to live in a specific place. We made the mistake of thinking the area we live in was like the brochure or whatever we saw. 9 years later I have a good idea of what it’s like and it’s enough to make me want to move. People are one of the biggest things that make a place good or not. Are they friendly, lazy, responsible, selfish, selfless. Also, cleanliness is important. Do people take care of themselves, their property, litter and maybe volunteer in the community? Some people with a low or no standard like a place like that. Some with a high standard want things right. It may be that birds of a feather flock together. Thanks for this video and the series to come!
Hey Paul, in general Montana is a very friendly place. Flathead County is definitely a mix of well manicured homes and lawns amongst those who still store non-working vehicles and other items on their property. If you want uniformity a community with a strict HOA is your best option here. I think any community will have a mix of lazy, responsible, selfish, and selfless residents. Thanks for watching :)

I'm from Dayton Ohio, but have lived in Alabama since I was almost 8. I'm 22 now. Me and my wife are moving to Montana whenever we can, and been planning on it for almost 2 years now. It's extremely hot and humid here in Alabama and just too many traumatic things have happened for my family. What little bit of family I do have. Radiant Wanderings Well I’ve wanted to be a Game Warden since I was little. I decided that if I chose that profession, I would move where it would be the most rewarding. Somewhere beautiful yet challenging. I thought I should attend college in Montana as well so I could get acclimated to life in Montana. I’ve been contemplating over Montana University in Missoula or Montana State in Bozeman. Would happen to have any suggestions or tips?
@@smittywerbenjagermanjensen6286 I don't know much about the universities themselves. For cities, I prefer Bozeman over Missoula. It's closer to Big Sky for skiing and to Yellowstone. But, if your goal is to work at Glacier National Park Missoula would be an easier weekend drive to visit. Actually Missoula is 3 hours from Glacier and 4 hours from Yellowstone so that's not too bad.

Thank you so much for creating and posting videos like this. I am looking for honest information about Montana, and this video is of great help. Much respect to those struggling with their homes, wishing them a river of abundance so they can live, love and enjoy their lifetime. I do trust that if people feel the call in their hearts to move somewhere, they should follow their intuition, whilst definitely respecting the Spirit of nature, wherever they are or go to. Lived in us for a year, not there but at chicago but i went for a week, one of the best places of the whole country, its very similar to tierra del fuego in Argentina where i live now, but without the problems we have here

I moved to Bigfork, MT about 2 years ago, still feel like I have a lot to learn about the area. The Nature keeps amaze you constantly. If you are a nature lover, you should come!

I like watching videos about places I’ll never live (it’s too cold 🥶) because it’s fun to see how others live. I’d love to visit though! I did the same thing, sold my house and moved to Hawaii. Radiant Wanderings, I lived on Oahu for 4 years. My two kids ended up going to the university there and when they graduated we all moved back to the mainland. I don’t really miss it because I can go there in my mind/heart wherever I want❤️ The islands are so magical.

When I was 18 I moved to Kalispell and went to Flathead Valley Community College, It was the most surreal experience of my life. Never once was I missing home (Minnesota) But after only one semester, I moved back home for financial reasons… I didn’t want to pay that kind of money for the degree I was getting. It’s been 1 year since moving back, I’ve got a full time job living with my parents and saving most of my money. But I’m not sure what I’m saving it for:/ I’m hoping soon I’ll find out where I truly want to go

Why is less diversity a bad thing? As a European (belgium) we got a lot of diversity and that's causing more and more problems.
Don't get me wrong, i have no problem with other peaceful cultures, but there is a huge social and civil gap between some.

I've been to 43 states, and only been to Montana through Yellowstone Gate (so would that count?). I always think Montana to be a very clear air and sparse state, and I imagine I would enjoy living close to a few pretty National Parks (Glacier!).
What an interesting Jesus statue - I think I've seen it before as well, so I guess that is a famous Jesus. LOL on ethnic food options - I would completely miss that! No sales tax is an amazing incentive.

Montana is a beautiful state but the winters there are brutal if you are not used to it. It snows a lot so be prepared to shovel snow every winter. I’ve seen it snowing as late as June in Montana. If you like the cold winter and the outdoors, Montana is great.
The ski slopes close around April 7th which means snow on the mountain is already getting scarce. Yes there is a one off snowfall that may surprise residents in June but it's def not the norm and it doesn't stick around. Be prepared for long Winters....approx 6 months (nov-april), short Spring & Fall, and Epic Summers.

I’m living in LA and working from home now that covid happened. My rent is $1750 for a 550 sqft apartment. I’m looking at Montana as a place to move and these videos are really helpful. Plus I think the culture is more fitting but I’m worried about winter.

If you’re renting an apartment, have you thought about Tucson? It’s beautiful here and so many affordable apartment complexes for $800-1000 in Oro Valley just north of downtown. Of course, the weather is slightly different, haha.
To be honest I don’t know. I have snow boarded a couple times but I never got good at it. I have probably been in snow less then 50 days in my life. I would be interested in trying
@@edbrooke75 well, it sounds like you are up for enjoying the snow so that will help immensely. The only other main concern is gray vs. sunny days. CA has a lot more sunny days. But...your rent there is crazy high compared to here so worst case, you try it out for a year or two, have an adventure, save some money, and move back if you hate it ;p

I dont do any of that. Im from the Houston area, we seen snow and a temperature lower than 30 degrees once every 3 to 4 years.

How are things as far as utilities? I’ve been looking around online at spots in Montana but it seems so hard to find a place with good internet and cell coverage that isn’t right in town somewhere
Yeah, the further out from town you get the more difficult it is. The best way to know for sure is to contact the providers with the address or a nearby established address before buying a property. A good real estate agent should also be able to help you out with this info I imagine. The main internet providers here are CenturyLink and Charter Spectrum, but there are some others as well.

Within Flathead County Kalispell is central and the others could be 15-45 minutes away. The airport is in Kalispell. For all of Montana the major cities are about 2-3 hours apart.

@@paulroese1376 there are car rentals at the airport and plenty of AirBnbs and hotels but they fill quickly in Summer. We were out of rental cars this Summer and I heard people even rented moving trucks to get around, haha. Soooo, yes but book well in advance if planning a Summer visit.

Just got back visiting another part of Montana last week. We have family that live there and more family moving there.

I will probably move to Billings for the lower costs of housing and job opportunities as a nurse in the bigger medical centers. Far from GNP but I'll get to drive across the beautiful state to get there. Close to Beartooth-Absoraka mountains and so much else. I am coming from Michigan so climate is no shock. I have visited Montana 5 times in 3 years and scoped out every town and region. I see beauty everywhere. I heard Montanans are not happy about outsiders moving in. I'm a U.S. citizen so Montana is my home too. I would always respect the culture and not try to change it- in fact I fit into it. I will contribute to society as a health care worker.
Whereabouts in Michigan? Definite pluses to each area. I didn't find Billings nearly as beautiful but you're right...if it has a lower cost of living, job opportunities, more dining options, and works better for your needs it's a great fit! What's your timeline for moving? Is photography a hobby then? Montana is a great state for photography :)
@@RadiantRealty I'm near Ann Arbor, Michigan. I have done so much research on real estate in Montana. I know there is no great back yard scenery from Billings but I don't think I'll ever be able to afford an estate like that as a single nurse. But to me, a house is just a place to sleep. I can get on the highway from Billings and within 30 miles, get great views of the Absoraka- Beartooths. Have you ever been down to Red Lodge? I made a video documenting my hike to Black Canyon Lake- so beautiful!! I'll be moving there in about 3 years. Yes, photography never disappoints out west.

@@RadiantRealty pretty much have the same pros although I think Montana has the better overall diversity in terms of plains, forests mountains from what I've gathered. Cons...other than less chances for employment none in my eyes compared to Ohio.
Grew up in the country less than 20 miles from lake Erie we get the same amount of snow as Buffalo so the snow will actually be less although colder. Which doesn't bother me at all.
I guess the internet would be slower but I grew up before internet was in our homes and cable for that matter lol. So that's not exactly a bad thing. Save for if your a minority, those times we're just better overall. There was much more sense of community back then.

Question! Is it reasonable to have a pool in Montana? We're coming from a home with a pool and my kids love it. Do you think it be a silly thing to invest in?
It is fairly uncommon to have a pool here although I have seen some. Sometimes people do an indoor pool so they can use it year round. Outdoor pool use will be quite limited due to our weather, however a hot tub is very common here. ;p Another option would be to live in a subdivision with a community pool. You will pay a bit higher HOA dues but won't have the upkeep and the kids can still enjoy it. But, ultimately, if you want a pool and the kids will use it and make memories in it go for it. You will have the party house. ;p Or, live on a lake and get a boat.

Hey Casey, that will vary by city. The cost of living you're currently used to will also make a big difference. If you scroll down to the "Cost of Living" heading in my blog post (link below) you can click the link and enter your current location and compare it to various cities in Montana - radiantwanderings.com/montana/montana/montana-living-moving-montana-kalispell-montana-city-guide/ After that, I would look up pay scales for IT and teachers and compare them with your current location. In this area, is there a need for a used book store with a bakery/ coffee shop? How about an interior designer? Also how about refurbished furniture store? Just trying to get a feel for the area and if I can do my businesses in this area. Also what type of people live in this county? Are they friendly? I currently live in Alaska, but the 36 hour trip just to visit my parents does get old.
We have several used bookstores and bakeries, but we don't currently have a combo so that could be a fun twist ;p We have quite a few interior designers, but I don't have a pulse on the demand so it may be viable??? Refurbished furniture seems to be a hot commodity here. The market beautiful is a big success. I know you said you were going to go over utilities. With the extended winter months in Montana how much can a person with an average size home spend on Heating?
For a 2,000 sf home probably around $150-$200 a month in the Winter depending on how warm you like it. Ours is around $180. I like it at 72 and use the gas fireplace daily as well. However, if you have a wood burning stove in your home that could become a lot less if you have access to wood on your property.

As I got older, I learned that I want to be around people who worked to better themselves and their surroundings and valued a conservative way of life (Strong family support, support of the law, self accountability). I lived with people who are very liberal and their laxness for these ideals [conservatism] _always_ ruined the community.

Montana is such an amazing state to visit but I am not sure about moving to. Every time I look at the weather for Montana it is snowing, hahaha. I do love to snowshoe and snowboard but I need a little shorter winters. I would never buy a home online unless it was 85% off. LOL 😂 We do love the summer out doors activities of Montana. We have not been to Glacier NP for a couple of years, but hopefully we can make it back there this summer 😎 We have that problem here, with wages not necessarily matching the cost of living. We would miss the diversity in food!

I'm one of those weird breed that love the (small) city feel as well as the amenities that come with cities, but also love the outdoors and want to get closer to nature. I have been looking at Missoula and have fallen in love with the city. Have you any experience with Missoula, good or bad, that you could give?
Missoula has a cute downtown area with a carousel by the river. The University of Montana is there so you have some college living nearby. And, they have a better mall than we have here in the Valley so a few more dining/shopping opportunities. The airport also offers a few more flight opportunities and sometimes better deals than ours. I'm told it's a bit more liberal. That's really all I know about it. I wish I could be of more help but I've really only driven through or stayed for a night before a flight or to visit the mall.

Hey Leo, in the valley we have Flathead Community College. As a state there is also Montana State University in Billings and University of Montana in Missoula. Thanks for the video, it was very informative. I am currently working toward getting my teachers certification, with the end goal of moving up there somewhere. That's several years away, so maybe the cold runs a few people away. I am also a photographer, so the thought of being outdoors and photographing wildlife is a dream. I currently live in East Texas and I am just tired of the heat, hurricanes, and humidity. As far a gray days, those are best for pictures anyway.

Anything broken? You share space in the trailer with freight, right? How was it? Were you able to lock the divider?
It was great! Especially nice for us because we had a 3 week delay in closing on our previous house and gaining possession of the new one. Worked as a storage unit for that time. Also, they drove it to Montana for us and we met it there. Nothing broken. I don't remember if we were able to lock our portion.

Did a couple ski trips last year to the US, including Idaho and Montana. I’m a Canadian and was quite disappointed in Bozeman and Big Sky Ski Resort. It was not what I expected to find in Montana. Overrated and expensive with lots of glitz and fancy stuff - you could feel the California influence. Not sure what you can do to stem the tide but I’m hopeful that you can hold onto the things that make your state great.
Really? I haven't been personally but I've heard only great things about the ski area. Did Big Sky get bought out? If so, that would explain it. There were talks of that happening here to Whitefish Mountain Resort, but it didn't transpire.
They developed a big, fancy, ski resort that caters to intermediate skiers who like long groomers. There are some good runs at the top but I feel like they tried to build the biggest and best ski hill with terrain limitations. I guess I like places with varied and challenging terrain and don’t like things that are overdone and cater to the wealthy. It’s also crazy expensive and cannot compete with mountains like Whistler Blackcomb which are in a different hemisphere. Schweitzer Basin is much better bang for your buck. Bridger Bowl near Bozeman is a fun hill but you won’t get fancy chairlifts with heated seats etc.

I feel so drawn there I watched the video of glacier National Park last night and I cried because of the majesty and beauty of the scenery. And a number of videos recommendations popped up one of them was about whitefish, Montana and the other was this video.... My husband and I lost everything due to the pandemic.. we have been rebuilding our lives ... By God's Grace.... I feel strongly this is where we belong. Thanks for your videos....

Speaking from perspective of Libby, MT (90 miles west of Kalispell)…we need younger, go-getter service businesses. We need house cleaners, yard lawn care, sprinkler system, electricians, plumbers, remodelers.large retired, seasonal, VRBO home owners and reliable services are hard to get in with. I believe a housecleaning mom and a yard are/snow plow dad, could choose their income level and would certainly be able to make 6 figures after taxes by being diligent dedicated business owners…demand is high, availability is low.

In this day and age where soooo many have extensive expendable income, yeah it’s gonna prompt them here. They’ll buy 2nd homes in beautiful areas everywhere around the world. Look at Jackson Hole. Locals can’t even come close to buying there. The rest of Wyoming, $250k gets a nice home, a huge shop and acreage.

I’m in mid 20s, should I move here? I plan to move here by late next year. I’m coming from Los Angeles. I was born and raised here, but it’s become the homeless capital. Graffiti, streets smell like urine, encampments popping up in residential areas now. Not to mention cost of living. I love my city, but it’s a mess that just keeps worse.

Do you enjoy snow activities or the idea of taking up one or two? Are you ok with hunting, fishing, and an open carry state? Do you like the thought of a smaller town? Would love nothing more than to live there but, we make less than 100k as a family. Our house we purchased was around 122k. I don’t know how some people can afford $500,000 homes. Definitely have better job than me. I’m about to take any other state to get out of Illinois.
When did you purchase your home Andy? Yes, prices here in Flathead County have increased dramatically over the last two years. Other parts of Montana are much more affordable, however if you are seeking an affordable change from Illinois have you looked to your neighbor Indiana? They made the top 10 list for places to move this year for affordability and jobs. :)
I am from florida and I have never even BEEN out west but I am considering moving to montana or wyoming one day because I just love the idea. going to visit a couple times and then decide. (I'm still in college) honestly idk if I could handle the cold as a Floridian born and raised but I hear you get used to it
Visiting should tell you a lot. Be sure to visit once during Winter as well to see how you feel about it all. If you are up for learning to play in the snow (ski, snowboard, snow shoe, etc.) I think you will adjust well. But we don't get nearly as many sunny days as you do in Florida. Also good to be aware of :)

Thank you so much! I've been looking at different places to move to from California, since the cost of living and taxes are so high were I'm at. I'm still young and want to live somewhere different for at least one year
Of course, we have a lot of people in the valley that have moved from CA.

I have a question for you Californians: Are you going to move to Montana and vote for the same policies and obscene taxes that are destroying California? If so, why move? Will attempt to assimilate to the culture of your new home or bring yours with you? I hope I'm not being rude, I genuinely want to read and process the responses.
*Everywhere I travel to, people ask this question. I can tell you straight up that in many, many places that the last people on Earth that people want targeting their area for moving are Californians. I'm trying to understand why that is.

Montana is the only state where you stay at an inn, look out the window, and see a Thomas Kinkaid-like scenery.
This is the sole reason why Montana is my favorite state...(Also, strangely every time I step foot into Montana, I get a girlfriend, but that is kinda irrelevant).

I would say each of the Pacific NW states have areas of that type of beauty. I have been there.
