Codex is hands down the best game I've played in the last several years. Bought the deluxe. Don't regret it. I could play this game for years and years.
I've played MTG a couple times in my life, I know the rules and how to play it and all but there was always a couple of things that bothered me about it. Being landlocked, and blocking rules. Codex quite honestly is everything I ever wanted in a MTG game, but done better in my opinion. Plus, there really is a cool "base building" aspect of the game that goes along with it. In short, I adore the game.

This is the best, the most eloquent, the deepest boardgame review I've ever seen... Thank you for that experience!

I love this game, one of the best games ever made. I agree with most of the points in this review and think it is one of the best board game reviews I have ever seen.
That being said, I wish you had focused a bit more on the quality and balance of options in this game, as it truly is excellent. You did mention it briefly but didn't stress it enough compared to your criticisms.
If you're going to say "this is bad, this is bad, this is bad" I think it's only fair that you mention how brilliant and high quality the things that are good are.
COdex Deluxe is playable on Tabletop simulator for free and it's amazing.

There's another dueling deck-builder called Blood Bowl Team Manager, I love it pretty much. The downside is that it's already out of print now :(.

I don't get to play codex often, but when I do, we draft.
I know you said it doesn't work - sirlin says it's bad game design and not how the game should be played. But - I only have one copy of the game, so we both can't pick the same hero / spec.
Drafting for Heroes/Spec works perfectly fine. Sure, you're only drafting 3 heroes, but I like the way it plays out. Kinda like League of Legends, but 3v3 instead of 5v5.

Great video, and - I obviously wish you do it more,
But after all the years since this video published and all the 1v1 games since then -
I REALLY wish you will do some videos regarding those games and/or that genre...

Blue Moon is also one of my favourite games! Really enjoyed this video and the partial delve into game design as well. Very informative! What do you do for a living if you don't mind me asking?

Great review yet again and, as always, incredibly informative! Thank you!
As I design Grimslingers 2, a game where you have tons of options that could easily overwhelm beginners, I've been working out different methods of information gating (you call throttling) and it's helpful to see how it was done on Codex. Also, the length of the discussion on the topic and it's pro's and con's.

Great review. I don't agree with a lot of what you said about the price of the game. The Red vs. Green core set actually has 18+ different "factions" in it. For example, on the red side, your strategy for one game might be with the Anarchy hero and his spells + the Fire units, or the Blood hero and his spells + the Anarchy units, or keep things simple with the Fire hero and her spells + the Fire units. So that's 9 different combos, plus another 9 for the Green side. But then the game lets you mix and match the different colors of heroes, too: you could do Balance hero + Fire units, etc. So compared to what you were saying about Blue Moon's 9 factions in one box, well that's actually less than half of what a single non-deluxe box of Codex has in it (and, the main draw of Codex is that you're not locked in to any one of those plans when the game starts, like you are in Blue Moon).
I don't know if this is a marketing issue or just a public perception issue coming from games like MtG, where people see Red vs Green and thus assume there's only two decks or something. But I thought I'd try and clear it up. Thanks again for the time you put into your review!

I think what you are saying is a little bit misleading. It's like looking at dominion and saying look a thousand combinations, when really it's a thousand permutations where you play with these 7 decks, then swap one look a new combination! Sure theirs variety but it's not that unique of a play experience each time.

    • @lettucemode8643
      @lettucemode8643 7 років тому +1

If you just swapped out 1 card for another in Codex like in Dominion, then I would agree with you, but it's not like that. Each tech line has a few spells and even more units, and even if you go with a certain combination you won't be able to use all of them in one match. It certainly does feel like a new play experience to me, shrug.

Another amazing review. These are great. Dude, I don't say this often, but there's money burning a whole in my pocket to keep this going. Put up a patreon or a paypal link or an affiliate link. Also never review Ninja Dice because I'm terrified of being on the receiving end :)

Is this the same Sirlin who wrote the novelization of the seminal TLC classic "No Scrubs"? To put it mildly I like the song a lot better...
Anyway, another great video. In particular the point about to what degree one is willing to use heuristics is an interesting one and something I'm going to need to think about explicitly the next time I'm playing a game. Thanks for that.
Also, I feel like stack shenanigans were some of the best things Magic had going for it. I remember when they decided that combat damage no longer went on the stack; that was a day that magic lost a lot of its charm.

Great stuff. I too, feel disinterested in the Magic formula as time goes on. The lack of reactions probably make this a miss for me, the mind games that come from them are easily my favourite part of these sort of games - it's why I like Netrunner. My favourite not-a-TCG-but-totally-the-same-style is Mottainai from Carl Chudyk. Has a bit of build up whilst remaining a very quick game, multiple decision paths, high interactivity and most importantly - powerful effects.

Amazing!! You may have sold me on Ortus Regni - assuming I can sell the idea to the Significant Other. I have already played a couple games on the PC version and I can sense the vast depth behind those 15 cards. Then again, will Loopin' Louie provide deeper mechanics and replay value... still torn on that decision.
And, just to echo what others have been saying, when you are ready for that Patreon, you can count me in.

The apparent similarity to Mage Wars is misleading; in MW, the contents of your binder basically constitutes your hand. You play whatever you want. Codex is different.
