And Lew dragged this video on for so long it's boring af watching him act like it's a scary movie and overblowing the whole thing. Spot has been around for years. The only groundbreaking thing about it is that it can move on 4 legs (still inferior to using tracks & roadwheels), and it's practically in every-day use is yet to be discovered. The money and time Boston Dynamics put into this gimmick could've been better used by developing smart prosthesis for the disabled and figuring out how to transfer commands directly from the brain to the prosthetic limb.

But already there are industries that use spot. One example is Spacex, they just started using it to inspect their prototype rockets after tests, a job too dangerous for humans. "tracks and roadwheels" wouldn't work either because of the debris from potential explosions. Off the top of my head, I can think of dozens of potential other applications as well. Dangerous jobs can be phased out to robots so fewer people will die in workplace accidents. Back to AI, imagine this paired with true artificial intelligence. You would have full hardware and software independence. The complexity of the tacks you could give it would be insane.
I love that Lew kept calling it "Spot". Not treating it as "an iPhone" like he says in the video. I feel like this robot dog is to advanced to consider it as an object like an iPhone or something like it but more of an early version of some kind of being that deserves to be named. I'm really just saying this cause I would have named it too and probably treated it the same as any other living breathing pet excluding food and stuff.

I imagine it would be relatively simply to map ATLAS's movements to a VR headset and tracked motion controllers for fine control. I'm sure that's coming if it's not here already.

I think the fact that y'all had it upside down and it had to flip itself over to be able to stand up made it actually all the more impressive because it could flip itself over and it was able to do so fairly quickly after just being tossed into random place in reality
This brought back memories of my experiences building AI robots. Me and my dad used to build robots like SPOT but bigger with hands that could grab. They where actually bomb disposal units built for law enforcement. The technology then was nowhere as advanced as to now but this video made me smile.
Love the reverence. It is truly something to behold. Those kids will remember the first real robot they saw for the rest of their lives and maybe tell their grandkids about it when they have become a coexisting commodity.
It gave me goosebumps seeing it walk up the stairs for the first time. I fully expected it to have a few hiccups… like every other remote controlled device. I’ve never seen a device with so much precision and dexterity. It’s truly mind boggling

It gave me goosebumps seeing it walk up the stairs for the first time. I fully expected it to have a few hiccups… like every other remote controlled device. I’ve never seen a device with so much precision and dexterity. It’s truly mind boggling
