I see some of the questions about getting started that people asked years ago. There are also some books out there you can get (I'm not sure they're still in print but Google can tell us) to give you some basic guidance. 1) Instrument Repair for the Music Teacher by Burton Stanley. Includes a list of minimum essential tools and supplies to get started. 2) The Band Director's Guide to Instrument Repair by R.F. Meyer. Also lists the basic tools you need, and then has chapters on the care and maintenance of most band instruments ... woodwinds, brass, percussion. 3) Last but certainly not least is the Band Instrument Repairing Manual by Erick Brand ... this one is directed at repair professionals and goes into great depth about many repair situations (I found this one day at my local Thrift Shop ... seems like I was meant to have it).

I appreciate the information about how to get started, especially when you can't take a year to attend one of the colleges and get the full-on education. Other places to get cheap instruments to practice on are 1) pawn shops and 2) eBay. There's lots of bargains to be had on eBay (often listed as "parts only" or "needs repair") and you can sometimes find near-junky instruments in pawn shops. (In pawn shops, I can usually get instruments if I bargain and offer them around 2/3 of their asking price!)

Hi, my high school band director and I have been trying to set up an internship for me to start fixing instruments, and we've been having trouble finding the right tools to start out with. We will mainly work with woodwinds and I was wondering if you could make a brief video on the basic tools you would recommend for woodwind repair. I watched your other video on where to get the tools(which was very helpful) but I need to know which tools to start out with.

I dropped my pocket trumpet a big dent in the bell and another on a tuning pie. I never had any tools so made them to do the repair I did a good job and it looks as new again, Anyway my friend has a Stratovarius 72 H trumpet he had bent the bell & the second valve tuner had very bad dents. He asked me if I would look at it I said yes, he left it with me to fix he paid £2500 for it well I did a great job on it he was so happy with the result so was I. Well its all thanks to watching your videos I was able to fix both trumpets, I have gone on to make more tools just in case. I want to say thank you very much for all your videos truly.

Hello! HS Senior here. I was wondering how Red Wing was and how much it actually prepared you as my application has been accepted and want to know by someone who went how it is.

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop

Congratulations on being accepted to Red Wing. They will teach you most of what you will need to know about band instrument repair in order for you to get your first job. Of course, they cannot teach you everything, but it will get you started and you will be able to figure out most of the other things on your own or with help from someone else. When you are first starting, you will tend to repair slowly, but you will get faster with some practice.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

Do you need schooling to repair instrument's? Like any licenses or anything of that nature? I can't afford schooling for it, and don't have local stores wanting to apprentice. I play Saxophone, clarinet and flute and make all my repairs and can repad them, put new corks on them etc.. I'm curious to know if you can just repair instrument's and make a business without any legality behind not being trained or not. I'm having a difficult time finding anything on this topic so any help would be very much appreciated!

In the USA (and I assume most countries) you do not need any license. To get started, some people go to local schools and ask the band directors if they can practice on some of their school instruments for free to get started. If you do a good job, they will want you to do more work for them and tell others too.

@@TheBrassandWoodwindShop Thank you so much! I already work on my horns to get experience and they play well, not at all Pro work but good enough for now. I look around goodwills and other thrift stores for old flutes and stuff to further my skills on other types of wood winds
