  • My Birds Paperwork is Wrong!
    Taxonomy is the science of naming, describing, and classifying organisms. But is natures filing system broken? In this video I talk about the potential dangers to a science that has not kept up with the modern understanding of what makes a population a species. Is lifes filing system broken and is genetics damaging taxonomy? With the ability to extract, sequence, and compare genetics of animals is the classification of taxonomy, grouping species based on physical and behavioural characteristics now outdated. What happens if one species is simply lumped in with another species because they share similar characteristics, can you see how this can quickly become an outdated science? Is the absence of genetics damaging taxonomy?
    Taxonomy has a problem, where modern genetics has proven speciation occurred between yellow billed kites and black kites, according to taxonomy, yellow billed kites are just a sub species of the black kite. This video looks at the kite distribution and the types of geographical speciation that may have occurred. The yellow billed kite vs black kite is a passionate topic for me, as well as the conservation of these birds of prey. I am not saying we throw taxonomy out of the window and categorise all living organisms by their genetic sequence, that’s just not possible.
    But when the evidence is already there should we really be ignoring it?

      @Khaine Able I appreciate the comment but it seems a little out of place, your talking about red kites on a video that about 2 different species of kite, you are aware there is different types of kite?

    Love the science Dan. People focus a lot on vulture conservation but there are loads of species like this that go under the radar.

      I wouldn’t ever want to take away from the current severity of the vulture situation but hopefully I can shed a bit of light on species that are also affected

      More bird conservation, over 50% of conservation done by biaza zoos is for mammals and birds get less than 20%

    Having seen both the Yellow Billed and Red Kites in the wild its surprising how hard they are to tell apart. Though the yellow billed can be identified by their distinctive yellow bills which are highly visible up to a couple hundred metres. You won't notice the size difference much, and of course the Red Kite has a distinctive tail.

    • @MercerFalconry
      @MercerFalconry  3 роки тому

      You can definitely notice a size difference when you get up close, the red kites are quite a bit larger, but I agree it’s hard to tell when they are in the air

      @@MercerFalconry yeah unfortunately the yellow billed kites were a lot more cautious than can be said of black kites so I was rarely ever able to get close. Hopefully I'll have better luck with the red kites over here.

    The red kite conservation was amazing in Wales, only two native breeding pairs left, saved by conserned farmers and then they started bringing in some from Europe to bring the population back from the brink. I worked in a conservation place called Nant yr Arian where you could mountain bike and watch the kites being fed, a wonderfully wild place

      It really is an amazing conservation success story, we shouldn’t have got to the point where a translocation release program was needed but at least the original 2 survivors in wales helped

      @@MercerFalconry agreed, from what I gathered, I heard the strain of red kite in Wales was bigger than those introduced from Sweden. Would have been wonderful to see more of. They are the closest looking thing to a real life phoenix, with their beautiful auburn plumage and Ash speckled white heads. Really one of the prettiest birds of prey. Happy to say they're the national bird of prey for Wales.
      Off the topics of kites I often wonder how many falconers use ospreys. I won't ever forget the first time I saw one fishing, really fantastic though they do look a bit like gulls when they fly. I'm guessing not a lot as their dirty would consist a lot more fish being a specialist, meaning you couldn't use a multipurpose food like a chick.

      I think they where brought over from Spain and Germany as well as Sweden too.
      I know of one falconer who uses an Osprey, there is a UA-cam channel called ‘Osprey Falconry’.
      I think you could quite easily have an osprey on a diet of chicks and beef and such, I have worked with large fish eagles who didn’t even like fish and had none in their diet and their diet in the wild would mainly be fish!

      Red Kites are a menace their numbers have got out of control and are stripping all wildlife out of the countryside. I routinely see kites in the hundreds over my area I was speaking to a landowner recently about it and his family have been farming that area for 150 years and it’s devoid off life no nesting birds no buzzards no kestrels no blackbirds nothing I routinely see gangs of red kites robbing crow and rook nests of young chicks. The RAF base up the road from me is culling RedKites under license. It’s very sad to see the only bird in the Countryside as the RedKite they’re more common than pigeons or seagulls in my town.

    That is a black kite that you have not a yellow billed kite the axual beak , hard beak is fully yellow with the yellow billed kite. Your black kites beak is black the skin around the beak is yellow.

    • @MercerFalconry
      @MercerFalconry  3 роки тому +2

      Juvenile yellow billed kites have a black beak, it’s takes them a few years to mature and for the beak to turn yellow

      @@MercerFalconry I see. That's very interesting I did not know that. They are truly amazing Raptors. Hiw long did it take you to train your yellow billed kite?

    • @MercerFalconry
      @MercerFalconry  3 роки тому

      It’s something I tell people when I do displays with him because he is still young. I’m not sure if I could say how long it took to train him, I raised him since he was just under 2 weeks old so there wasn’t much training involved, I just let him go when he was old enough to fly and let him work it out himself really
