Forging a Joey Van Der Steeg style scribe/punch!

- Having seen Joey Van Der Steeg's take on the old Centre Punch/ scribe, I just had to make one! I decided to add a little Towns flare to it, especially as this one is going to a good mate across the sea.

Well done, Sam!
Thanks mate! It's a fun little project!
That my friend was a pleasure to watch nothing but pure smithing and well done at that every hammer blow concise. Perfection
Thanks mate!
This is extremely cool!

Thanks mate!
Sam Towns, Bladesmith ur very welcome my friend forge on
Very cool!
Definitely need to make me one of these bad-boys
They're simple and effective, and fun!
Nice and clean, well done, Sam!
Cheers mate
Awesome work mate! aways love to see a talented blacksmith do its magic. Gonna definetly do something like it in a near future. Might even become a video in my channel (with the proper given credit)
Really nice bit of forging!
Cheers!
Very nice! Guess I know what I'll be making this weekend.
Do it! Thanks mate
I love watching steel heat back up from the friction of a heavy hammer blow. A tip I learned from the old farts at my blacksmithing association-when you upset back towards yourself, hold the piece into the crotch of the step on the anvil. It supports the work on two sides and keeps it from going wonky so easily (sounds like it wouldn’t work but it really does help)
Awesome advise! I'll definitely try it, cheers!
Great job. I been thinking of doing one myself but gotta get on making a hammer before the end of the month. Maybe I'll make one from garage door spring. Less drawing out. Keep up the good work sir
Thanks mate, yeah definitely give it a goa
Nice video Sam!
Cheers!
Yours avoids the forge welding to rebar that Joey did, a plus! Also, I believe you quenched in oil, not water, which is my preference for spring steel. Plus, the flame blueing is quite attractive. Thanks for sharing!
Haha yeah I wasn't keen on trying forgewelding with this one, just simple and clean!
I would like to add a correction here. I have NOT done any forge welding to the scribes I have forged. They are one piece of spring steel.
Only the compass components have forge welded on bits of spring steel, to a rebar body.
Right you are, Joey, that was my error.
Nice and pretty :)
Thanks Kaitlin 😁
Ok, you convinced me, I will make one! Up until now been using a needle from a needle gun I have had 35 years or more, really hard and works very well but is only 3/32 and sometimes hard to grip.
Yeah they're a good little project, and you can make them whatever diameter you like!
I've had to regrind the head of my centre punch a few times over the years.
It may have been poorly heat treated, since we were told what to do in two minutes alongside the demonstration.
It should be interesting to see if that clip drifts along with the head mushrooming with use, or just breaking off.
Realistically you shouldn't be hitting it that hard. It's a marking punch not a centre punch, it has a more acute tip for scribing so it's not going to provide a wide enough mark to centre large drill bits. If you wailed on it I'm sure it would drift, but as it's annealed I doubt it will break off

Ah, so it's going to a one man workshop.
Thanks for clearing that up.
The only scribing tools I was ever exposed to, were too thin to hit with a hammer.
Still, tools seldom seem to be used in the intended method, unless it's that person's own.
Have a good evening.
You're videos are brilliant. Absolutely some of the most educational I have seen. I just watched your tempering video with the torch and learned alot. I was wondering why my spine on amy first bowie wasn't turning blue in one spot. It's because I had the flame in one spot and the flame was neutral this not turning past peacock color. The other side of the spine was a nice dark blue. Made the knife from an old 10mm thick leaf spring cheers!!.
Compared to you and Joey mine looks like a troll crayon
😆🤣 practise makes better mate
Nice one Sam, i've been thinking of making one too after watching Joey's vid. Now doubly so :)
Cheers mate, they're a great little project
I made after his vid too but i made mine from garage door spring i was in a hurry lol
Haha yeah they're pretty cool!
What happened to Joey’s channel, anyone know?
