  • With kids heading back to school, it's essential to ensure they stay healthy and happy. Let's dive in!
First, prioritize the basics: sleep, exercise, and nutrition. Make sure your child eats nutritious meals, stays hydrated with water, and gets plenty of physical activity and sleep. A nutritious breakfast helps kids function better at school, and many schools offer free or reduced-price meals. Don't forget to check if your child qualifies for these programs.
Getting enough sleep is critical. It impacts memory, concentration, creativity, and overall learning. Lack of sleep can lead to lower academic performance and increased tardiness. Aim for a consistent bedtime to help your child get the rest they need.
Next, stay up-to-date on checkups and immunizations. Schedule a back-to-school physical if your child hasn’t had one in the past year. If they play sports, they might need a pre-participation exam. Immunizations, including the annual flu shot, are crucial to keep your child healthy and in school.
If your child has lost health insurance coverage, seek help through Medicaid, CHIP, or other insurance options. Having health insurance ensures they receive the care they need.
Tune in to your child's mental health. Let them know it's okay to talk about their feelings with you. Create a judgment-free zone and really listen to their concerns. Look for changes in behavior or signs of anxiety or depression. Regular family routines, meals, and walks can provide opportunities for these important conversations.
Talk about racism, bullying, and kindness. Encourage your child to seek help from a trusted adult if they face discrimination or bullying. Emphasize the importance of treating others with respect and the positive impact of kindness. Research shows that kindness can reduce stress and improve overall health.
Plan for mindful media use. This is a great time to create or update your family media plan. Balance screen time with sleep, exercise, and other healthy activities. Help your child choose high-quality programs and teach them to recognize and avoid false information online. Discuss their social media use and guide them on safe practices.
Remember, your pediatrician is here to help with any questions or concerns about your child's health. If your child isn't feeling well, don't hesitate to reach out. You can also contact the school nurse for guidance during the school day.
Wishing you and your kids a happy, healthy school year!
