You chose to do this to try to get ahead of your insulin resistance; imagine how hard it is for people who have to have these devices to just LIVE their lives. Diabetes and blood sugar related conditions are making the medical industry billions. Thank you for calling attention to all of this.
I’m tracking my blood glucose because I’m pregnant and they said 135 after the glucose drink was too high. I have to track from home for a week. It’s fascinating. You’re supposed to test an hour after eating though. I found that 30 minutes after eating an entire pizza, I was at 155, but an hour after I was 116. An hour after eating is up to 140 and 2 hours after eating is 120. I’ve also found that if I start my day off with just fruit and veggies (like a shake or whole fruit), my numbers never get above 110 for the day. But if I start off with my whole grain bagel, I’m usually in the 115-130 range
Yeah when it comes to those kinds of spikes, it’s more important that it comes down quickly (numbers are weighing range in 1-2 hours). And yes! Fiber in the beginning of the day can make a HUGE difference!
Cool video! Fun fact, reheated, aka day old, white rice won't spike your glucose nearly as much as freshly made. I wish everyone could get a cgm just for information's sake at least once a year covered under insurance, or at least reduced costs. You can learn so much from them.
Please make more videos on this topic! I was recently diagnosed with insulin resistance. I think I have had it for several years and I think so many people have it and have no idea. I don’t understand why the current medical approach is to wait until it’s a “problem” to address it. Also, insulin resistance can make it very difficult to lose weight which is what they say reverses it. Just seems like a cycle that leaves so many of us frustrated and discouraged. I have been dieting and exercising for over a year. I’ve steadily lost over 30lbs while maintaining my muscle, yet I am still insulin resistant.
So glad you are addressing this, I have seen so many influencers either debunking or supporting insulin resistance. So excited to see your take on this.
antastic video Marisa…please do follow ups! Such an important subject for us all. Have also long been wanting to trial cgms but as you say the costs and access to said devices are prohibitive. Love what I’m hearing about January - will check it out. Thanks for what you do
love your mini rant about accessibility of the CGM. My blood sugar went hella wacky when I was pregnant. Guess I don't need to tell you what happened when I tried to get a CGM.
Everything is already explained in Jessie Inchauspés book "Glucose revolution" , along with hacks and simple ways to reduce the glucose spikes. She also extensively explained why the spikes are so bad and what they cause. Also her IG channel is great.😊
Awesome video! I LOVE the awareness and information you brought to it! I have a question that I didn’t see in the comments. Did you experiment with how long after eating you waited before taking a walk that resulted in more stable glucose? Either way, how long after eating did you wait to start your walk? Thank you!
I wish every nutrition influencer would do this! There are a couple people who have a massive following that I’m pretty sure are consistently having major glucose spikes. They are unfortunately passing along bad advice for the majority of people following them.
I think this is an important conversation. However, I think just like with other tools this may in the end be used to bad ends. Orthorexia and “clean eating” and so on would jump on this like a barnacle. Also, it seems like the basic issue is just pair sugary things with exercise. Or make sure and have fiber/protein before sweets. So the idea is protein doughnuts, veggie chips and some nuts before a danish, and so on and so forth. Also, I think baking with whole grain flour, almond flour, and vegetables pureed is one way to combine everything you should have into one. We need to not just tweak small habits but actually explore recipes that help people eat healthy while also simultaneously being easy and deliciously healthy, There are so many recipes that could be tweaked like this, but it just hasn’t happened yet.
I love this! Could you track blood sugar on days with high carb, high fiber, low fat, and days with high fat, low carb? That would be so interesting to see!
I wonder if insulin resistance has anything to do with EDs and extreme hunger when one starts to eat normally again? I would love to hear more about this....
I don't know, I do know when I'm on a cut, and the last month I'm pretty much doing no carbs, when I'm finally finished, I'm Starving...... Or at least it feels that way.
Well, I'm also a guy, so I don't know if it makes a difference. It's weird, I don't have a sweet tooth at all, but my weakness is red meat and carbs like rice and pasta.
I am so excited for this! I was going to ask if you were making a vid about CGMs as I’ve been very curious about this. I guess I’ll see! 😊 Sincerely, a long time fan of many years 😊
I would love to see a study on Pilates and low impact exercise as I feel like girls are obsessed with now and the long term of that vs weights. I won’t lie I love both but just want whats best longevity wise
Such a well researched and interesting video! Thank you so so much❤ Would you have any different advice for someone who is already insulin resistant? Or would the suggestions remain the same as those you mentioned in the video (walking after eating, resistance training, etc.)?
The suggestions are basically the same! The only difference I would personally make in coaching someone would be if they already have insulin resistance to just be a little bit more mindful and strict about the things that they can do to improve it

how stoked are you on the stress feature on the Oura ring? Sunday nights have been my worst sleep and I'm finally understanding why! I do way too much on a day where prioritizing recovery might be better for me right now.
I’m really intrigued to do this! I get a lot of reactive hypos - I suspect my blood sugar spikes and plummets so I maybe produce too much insulin idk. Anyhoo thank you for this video. I keep wanting to try one of these and maybe will soon :)
It’s absolutely possible to have daily glucose spikes and lose weight. The glucose spikes don’t really interfere much until you start developing insulin resistance.
I couldn’t find the podcast you mentioned you linked in the description box. Can you please share the title of the podcast episode with Dr. Hyman and January? Thanks 😊
Just a thought thogh , bou january just tracking for 2 weeks - what about the changes that females hormones have gonig through the month as this will effect the insulin sensitivty/responce to a food
If you eat something and your blood sugar rises, but then you don’t eat anything for a while and your blood sugar drops again, will you be able to burn fat? (I hope that makes sense 😅🙈)
So if breakfast sets your glucose for the day what does that mean for people who i.f. ? Also is i.f. good for changing insulin resistance in women? I hear conflicting info on that all the time
I’m this context, breakfast just means the meal that breaks your fast. It doesn’t matter what time it’s at Intermittent fasting can be harmful for some women and helpful for others - it really just depends on your body and your hormone sensitivity
@@MissFitAndNerdy I've always theorized I have carb malabsorption due to a couple of reasons, antibiotic usage being one of them! I am excited to see what will happen.
@Mastering Diabetes are on track, with fruit-based diet, keep the fat away from your cells and the necessary carbs can get in ! don't go keto, eat up your fruit, salads mostly.

YUP! Dude it makes me so mad how difficult it is to get the data you need to be healthy. It blows my mind how far behind our medical system is
I can’t explain how much I love watching your videos. I owe not only my weight loss, but my rejuvenated health to you!!!!
that's really cool!

Yes! This is a great tip!
I've heard the same goes for reheated pasta!
Reheated pasta still spikes my glucose, but not reheated rice 🤷🏻♀️

YUP! You hit the nail on the head. The current medical system doesn’t care to do anything about it until it’s too late. It’s wild
So glad you are addressing this, I have seen so many influencers either debunking or supporting insulin resistance. So excited to see your take on this.
I totally agree!
I love that you get straight into the topic in your videos, it's a little detail that makes them so much better, thank you!

Excellent video❤ preventive care is such a great tool!!!
As someone that has just recently been diagnosed with PCOS, I AGREE :D

My CGM expired so now I’m just using January’s predictive model. But if you use a CGM, I highly recommend doing what you just said!

@molasorrosalom4846 how much carbs allow you to feel satisfied? And os maintenance comfortable for you?
Well, I'm also a guy, so I don't know if it makes a difference. It's weird, I don't have a sweet tooth at all, but my weakness is red meat and carbs like rice and pasta.
Low carb Leads to (temporary) glucose intolerance. Therefore it is the Maine driver in extreme hunger
Thank you! I have been eagerly waiting for this video! ❤ So so so helpful! Can't wait to try out January for myself!
Only 8 minutes in, but I had to #MamaNerdyFanClub, because I👏 just👏 love 👏to see you guys together!

Thank you for this very interesting video! Could you post a link the podcast/video that you mention around 11:30, would love to look more into this!

Watching as replay.
Jordan Syatt recently did a great video where he spiked his blood sugar everyday while losing weight for a month - very interesting!

Morning Marisa 😁
Heck yea is the most important thing. Too much insulin release ages you faster for starters.
If you eat something and your blood sugar rises, but then you don’t eat anything for a while and your blood sugar drops again, will you be able to burn fat? (I hope that makes sense 😅🙈)
Depends on the individual case and situation.
Smart watch with a built in glucose monitor would awesome
That is the future!!

Fat is actually very good for you and necessary for health/hormone production. I wouldn’t recommend avoiding it
@@MissFitAndNerdythe things you referred to are right. But high fruit could kill you with Diabetes or pre diabetes
Do you still intermittent fast?
Not intentionally, but yes usually I don’t get hungry for 12-16 hours after dinner
You don't have to answer if you want, but what's your ethnicity?
Also, I hope you're doing well.
Mostly white af with sprinkles of some other stuff lol
First
I‘d love to try monitoring my blood sugar. Sadly January is just shipping to the US 🥲
But anyways, it was such an interesting video!!
In other countries you might be able to get a CGM for a lot cheaper! The US healthcare system makes things soooo expensive
