a lot of it was within his control. he did not want rangnick to be around, he did not want any recommendations that rangnick and his team left behind, he insisted on building his team around de jong and nobody else, he wanted arnautovic and rabiot in. if he accepted that he was just going to be managing and for there to be somebody else doing the footballing director and scouting jobs then this window would not have looked like this. i think he underestimated the magnitude of the job.
United aside, thank you Adrian for consistently being one of the best creators in the YT football space. Very few creators are ever as objective and thorough as you and I’m glad you’re still at it.
14:07 This is the simplest way it can be put. A transfer is a three way tango. The buying club, the selling club, and the player/agent. They got 2.5 of those things settled. Unfortunately, the player themselves showed absolutely zero interest in a club and especially a manager who were doing literally everything they could to convince him, and it wasn't even close to enough.
Even sadder fact is, MUFC was ready to go back and increase their bid for Arnautovic. Only being called deal off after a fan outrage and loads of emails being sent to Arnold and Murtough about the signing, mostly for his allegations and issues. If you think you can’t go more messy, ask MUFC how to. They’re experts in failure.
@@arroe8386 I always found it a bit suspicious when Barca confirmed the renewals of Ter Steven & De Jong back in October 2020 and literally a week later, Bartomeu resigned.
As a life long United fan, I completely agree with you. The biggest problem with the owners is that they dont want to win trophies and improve the club. They just want to be a top 6 team and somehow make money by playing in Europe. Unless they change their mentality, nothing big will happen to this club.
Great take on the Man U situation, Adrian. Even though I'm not a fan of the club, it's sad seeing United being run so poorly. And seemingly not getting any better!
I remember seeing a tweet a long time ago saying Ole saved Man Utd from becoming Arsenal. No. Its the exact opposite. If not for Mikel Arteta and Josh Kroenke stepping up, we'd be in the exact same situation as them.
Arteta has taken you no where Emry finished 5th with 70 points 3 years later spending 250 million and Arsenal are the same place 5th with 69 points where is the progress??
@@emilfrederiksen.1622 We were practically in the same situation as united, we needed to first change our culture, get rid of deadwood on high wages and recruit the right targets. All that has been reflected on the pitch. Even though we haven't had results lately in terms of trophies or getting champions League, we are surely heading there. You can argue that we haven't progressed but you can't deny that we can compete now finally.
Hi Adrian, as a local Man Utd supporter, I just wanted to say thank you for this. The way you put it across there at the end is the way it needs to be said - those who run the club aren't looking to change. They literally do not care about the club itself, it is ONLY about money. I don't envy billionaires like them, I actually feel sorry for how far greed has corrupted their now-empty souls. It's been clear and obvious what's been happening for a long time now, but sadly it takes years and years before enough people board the bandwagon, even when you put the evidence right in their face. Hopefully the momentum will culminate in an uprising, but it's tragic that most fans need to suffer for so long and have their ever-renewing faith utterly trampled before enough people come together. Again, thank you for saying it how it is.
unfortunately I don't see it changing unless fans stop going to games and buying merch. hit them where it hurts the wallet. if not they will continue to take from the club until sponsors won't touch and players wouldn't dream of joining. the debt will make new investors harder as well
Talking about strikers - 9:15 "Why not a player that can grow with the club?" Because they tried but one got worse with age and the other got banned from football at 20 years old.
We let one Pogba go and bringing in Rabiot, linked with Arnautovic, Icardi. We should try for Mario balotelli and add Greenwood. Great attacking lineup
The owners just want the club to be run for them so they can keep taking fees and dividends for absolutely no effort or responsibility, they don't care if those people are competent or not, so long as they keep the money coming
We should compare ManUtd's situation with Arsenal's situation now as they had near identical case at the beginning. As an Arsenal fan, I've always believe that Arsenal and ManUtd shared a common enemy, terrible American owner. Yet I was wrong (almost) about the Kroenkes and since gained full ownership, they have been backing up the club also given, Arteta and Edu almost full autonomy to operate. And unlike ManUtd with Ed Woodward, Arsenal chief executive Vinai Venkatesham never seems to be involve with football aspect of the club. The Kroenkes are still an absence figure at the Emirates but the animosity toward them slowly declining with Arsenal showing potential to challenge the big two.
Agreed, it's not like we haven't spent in last 3 years. We infact have spent lot more than other clubs. There has been significant improvement in players we bring in in the last 2 years. I'm happy with all the signings not one of them is just to full the numbers. Every signing has a purpose no more random loans, fillers, over paid wages, 30+ year olds, etc. Now this year and next year success will be crucial
Agree. I think the difference between us and united is that when we buy or sell players, we can see what Mikel and Edu are trying to accomplish. Whereas for United, there doesn't seem to be a strategy.
as a juventus fan iw as afraid we would have to pay to be freed from Rabiot and we not only get rid of him but we even get paid.... the only reason Rabiot is playing is that he was the only midfileder who actually didnt get injured last year and Allegri didn t trust young player enough(Miretti only get to play last month) This is a worse scam than the Pogba deal
Manchester United needs to hire a director of football and allow him all the power he needs, all the Goblin owners need to do is give him the spending money
my friend (lifelong united fan) went to england sometime last season to watch a game and jokingly said how he didnt plan on flying there to watch a mid-table clash lol. its incredible how far they have fallen.
As a West Ham supporter I'm absolutely loving Man Utd hurtling down into the abyss, and all those glory hunters they picked up in the 90s and are abandoning ship.
For me Rangnick should have been the coach and the consultant as well. But look how the board, players and fans treated him, saying nonsense like he isnt a real coach although he was a coach for the most period of his career. Pathetic! The only manager with enough brain to handle the mess was Rangnick.
In terms of rebuild I think Arsenal is a better example than PSG. PSG was never in a "crisis", they just spent money without a clear plan. Arsenal, at the time when Mikel Arteta took over, was a burning dumpster of a football club. If you look at Arteta's first XI and compare it to now you can see how far they have come. If I had to point out a key difference at Arsenal and Man Utd it would be the owners. Over the last 4 years my opinion of the Kroenkes shifted massively. They brought in a manager and a sporting director with a clear idea of what Arsenal should be and supported them all the way. While all the rival fans were mocking us they stuck with the manager and supported him not only in the transfer market but also internally. That's how we got rid of the players who contributed to a toxic atmosphere and replaced them with young, exciting players who trust in the manager's plan. As an Arsenal fan I find it sad how a club like Man Utd fell so low. The Wenger and Fergie rivalry was peak Premier League. Honestly I don't think it's going to change unless they get proper owners who actually care of the football club.
You're right! Arsenal is a great example that Manchester United should absolutely follow. They've done an incredible job over there. As for the PSG comparison: I meant it more as in they identified a problem and made a major change swiftly because they have a hunger for success. The mentions of open heart surgery from Rangnick and "if everyone *_wants_* it" (wanting the change internally is the big thing) points to how those at PSG actually want to change, while those at United don't. Not so much the same situation, more the identification of a problem and a willingness to change (which doesn't exist at United). I may not have been clear enough there, my bad.
@@RabonaTV It's all good I think you have made a valid point. I just wanted to point out Arsenal as a better example because the situation is more similar and the work Edu and Arteta have done often gets overlooked especially since they rebuilt when the pandemic was at it's peak. I don't want to get too deep into a medical discussion but if PSG's case was like a "heart problem" then Man Utd is more like a malignant tumour with metastases. It's shocking how arguably the biggest club in the world can appear so disorganised and incompetent. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if there's some kind of twisted nepotism going on there.
I have friends who started supporting liverpool after 2005. They have had to endure a lot of tough years, and persist with them before the support started finally paying off. Hang in there mate. United will be back, hopefully sooner rather than later

United is exactly where Liverpool was in the late 90s. A club that thought the good times would last forever. A big club but not nearly as big as they once were.
What happened to Marcus Rashford is the same thing that happened to both Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen. Both got over played, got too fatigue and become very injury prone.
No it's "Mourinho fault" just blaming the manager. Reaching "2nd place with this team is my greatest achievement in my career", is aging better than the best brand of whisky. Wake up Man united
They're just throwing cash at problems that built up and developed over years. 95% of players got worse after joining this club. Even world class talent regressed in their development after their break-through. This club appears to be run like 8 year olds playing FIFA with their money cheat on. Instead of changing the environment they just sign new players for absurd fees to ruin them. McTominay wouldn't be in the starting line-up in at least half a dozen other PL Clubs, that's for sure, but he is also the only cdm in the squad. For one offensive midfield position they now have Fernandes, van de Beek and Eriksen, as well as 6 full backs who are all decent but without one being world class. To stabilize the team, and a certain overprized defender, I'd install a back 3, Douglas Luiz from Villa and Tielemans would be a good adition to the starting line-up. Both have the quality to help this team, without being predominantly "jersey movers" and their contracts run only 'til 2023.
As a United fan, we have never been to long out of the champions league. getting 6th last season, and now its possible that we will end up roughly same position this season. All other clubs in the race have spent and seemingly well. But we have not. The Board and owners are fully responsible for the current woes, and it will be interesting to see what will happen if and more likely we finish 6th again.

Because if something doesn't turn around soon we could end up at the bottom 3 at the end of season.

As long the Glazers rule the club, Manchester United will never again compete for silverware. McFred are awful for a long time. Poor planning, scouting and recruitment has hurt the club. Owners who don't care for the club.
With people blaming maguire for everything wrong with united I just have one thing to say, have you seen him play for england? with a midfield of declan rice and kalvin phlillips infront of him, he looks like a completely different player in recent games (and in the past) we have seen maguire going off the defensive line and further forward which might be because he doesn’t trust the midfield to cover for them and i don’t care what people say about this but I think both sancho and rashford would be world-class in a well drilled system like man city or even spurs for that matter seeing how conte has completely transformed them and you using PSG was a great example along with that, the potential in growth with the change in hands of ownership can be seen when comparing to barca (president in their case) but the person up top needs to have the ambition and hunger for growth and success and above all love the club.
Imagine part contributor to Man U buying CR7 was because they couldn't allow him to go to Man City!!?? That was supported by notable ex- Man U players like Gary Neville etc. The same guys who repeatedly say that Man U has poor recruitment strategy!! The thing is football has become much more sophisticated. Just buying the best players and putting them together is simply not enough to produce a winning team! Time has changed, the types of players today has changed (character, mentalities, etc). The formula to win has changed. In fact I suspect even Sir Alex managing Man U today would have issues with competing for the PL title with teams like City with the money, and tactical revolutionaries like Pep and Kloop in the PL. The landscape has changed and the path to creating a championship team has also changed.
Can we talk about how Man u came 2nd in the 2020-21 season? Thanks Solskjaer & Cavani! I'm sorry marketing and thereby Ronaldo were prioritized over quality football. How Maguire is still with this squad baffles me. I think the Greenwood debacle really hurt them. I fully agree with Adrian, the missing midfield is really hurting the team in many ways. Another solid video, thanks!
The context is important, Nic. I was speaking about how the board play favourites and promote from within instead of bringing in the absolute best people for the job (like a Campos, Edwards, what have you), and then said that Murtough has only just begun in his role... because he has. He has been with the club since Moyes arrived, but his new role was created as of March 2021. Look it up.😉
@@RabonaTV I agree with all of that. In a just world, Murtough wouldn't have even been considered. This, however, is not a just world, meaning nepotism and buddies win out over professionals who actually know what they're doing. I understand that he only took control as the head of transfers last year, but he has also been an important member of the board and the recruitment team for 10 years. I'm not disagreeing with you, it's just yet another example of how the Glazer-run United will reward failure. You can't even call it the Peter Principle, because that would imply he was good at his previous jobs.

While im happy with Ten Hag, I've been saying for years that who they actually need is the other guy at Ajax. They need a fresh, modern football mind making the directorial decisions and the perfect fit, with connection to the club's legacy to boot, is van der Sar.
You can´t turn anything without quality, Rabiot is a very good player, but not nearly enough, they should get Neves also, i stil don´t get why they didn´t bought the portuguese already, he´s the perfect DM for Ten Hag, They also need to get Antony.
Ive only gotten into Football in the last 4 years. I always heard about Manchester United as this Monolith or incredible Hulk but all Ive ever seen with my eyes is a mid table shamble of a club. If I had never heard of them before I would have thought they were in the same class as West Ham, I mean they are now, but like always.
Im sorry but it is just wayyyy too easy to criticize on the midfield so much, i do believe mcto isnt the best and fred is limited, but i feel more heart from them than the rest of the team all together, give them a solid defense, give them an attack who try to combine and create action, try to have laterals who actually are attacking minded while being at least OK defensively and yeah maybe change mcto, but these two always seem to have more heart than the rest of the team...
Or employ someone who actually know their stuff (they had a chance with ragnick, imo he will be a very good director for them, but they fired him, so idk and the reason with ten haag success is that he has a good director behind him, which he doesn't get in united)
If MU actually change, then there would not be any more comedy while watching them. So the Glazers, please keep doing what you've been doing to MU because everyone loves seeing MU players perform comedic acts during their matches. #4EverUniShit
There's no problem in a short term solution when you have your long term one coming through the youth ranks and making waves in the first team. We were building around rashford, Sancho and greenwood, so if one went off form the other two could carry the wings. With the first two being off form, and the centre piece going to jail, we've lost the spine of our team leaving our back end completely exposed to a weekly spanking by relegation fodder teams
Bruh calling Arnautovic racist is like so over the line. He is (was for me) controversial, but he isn't fucking racist. He had a discussion with the player of Montenegro and even he said that Arnies punishment at Euro 2020 was way to harsh and somehow no one is talking about the provocations Arnie had to endure. Sure what he did was still not right but the involved players discussed it and it shouldn't be a negative point against Arnie anymore. And of course he isn't fucking racist.
The fan is from North Macedonia, not Montenegro. I've made that mistake in the past! Anyway, Whitwell pointed out that a North Macedonian fan asked how signing him would clash with Man United's zero-tolerance approach to racism, he didn't say "a fan wrote to call Arnautovic a raging racist." But that, coupled with the Eredivisie instance (of which Arnautovic denied as well, it's a "his word against mine" situation) must have been enough to put United off. Perhaps thinking it's a "where there is smoke, there's fire" kind of thing, I don't know. That and Bologna telling them he is unsellable of course.😂

a lot of it was within his control. he did not want rangnick to be around, he did not want any recommendations that rangnick and his team left behind, he insisted on building his team around de jong and nobody else, he wanted arnautovic and rabiot in. if he accepted that he was just going to be managing and for there to be somebody else doing the footballing director and scouting jobs then this window would not have looked like this. i think he underestimated the magnitude of the job.
I mean Laporta has always been keen on keeping him, he just can't stand the enormous contracts Bartomeu has been handing out
And now, apparently Laporta's administration found criminality in the renewal of De Jong as well.
@@Emmanuelw2Ms well, that's always hard to prove, even though Bartomeu made that contract while being kicked out
@@arroe8386 I always found it a bit suspicious when Barca confirmed the renewals of Ter Steven & De Jong back in October 2020 and literally a week later, Bartomeu resigned.
Haven't even watched the video, but holy shit Adrain that thumbnail is beautiful. 😂😂😂
I remember seeing a tweet a long time ago saying Ole saved Man Utd from becoming Arsenal. No. Its the exact opposite.
If not for Mikel Arteta and Josh Kroenke stepping up, we'd be in the exact same situation as them.
Arsenal fans acting like they won the champions league cause they finished 5th
Arteta has taken you no where Emry finished 5th with 70 points 3 years later spending 250 million and Arsenal are the same place 5th with 69 points where is the progress??
@@emilfrederiksen.1622 The main difference between United and Arsenal is that Arsenal actually have a plan. United are terribly run.
Again, thank you for saying it how it is.
unfortunately I don't see it changing unless fans stop going to games and buying merch. hit them where it hurts the wallet. if not they will continue to take from the club until sponsors won't touch and players wouldn't dream of joining. the debt will make new investors harder as well
Talking about strikers - 9:15 "Why not a player that can grow with the club?"
Because they tried but one got worse with age and the other got banned from football at 20 years old.
We let one Pogba go and bringing in Rabiot, linked with Arnautovic, Icardi. We should try for Mario balotelli and add Greenwood.
Great attacking lineup
why drag balotelli down to hell with rest of you red bellied cowards??? 🤣🤣
The De Jong saga must be the most hilariously pathetic saga in modern transfer history
I appreciate the insight!
Bang on! It's beautiful to see the 90's glory hunters suffer!
Liverpool fan. And I approve of this message.
I got into soccer in 2013 and I picked Manchester United as my team. Just the right time to become a supporter 😂
Mate, same here. Always favored Man U & Madrid. Quite a balance 😂🥲
I started watching Man U since 2013. It’s like getting into MCU with Phase 4. 😤
I have friends who started supporting liverpool after 2005. They have had to endure a lot of tough years, and persist with them before the support started finally paying off.
Hang in there mate. United will be back, hopefully sooner rather than later

Spring 2014 near the end of the 2013-14 season for me, watching Wayne Rooney made me a fan of this club.
Rip Sancho’s career
2 years ago, he was one of the best promising young lads in Europe. Now his career is in jeopardy
well, he chose to join MU, every bad decision has its consequences.
Yeah, when he was in dortmund probably all clubs wanted him. Now...man utd kinda ruining his talent
Its surreal that a team that i dreaded and feared for so long has fallen so far. LONG LIVE MCFRED
Still remember woodward saying this about 5-6 years ago *united dont need trophies to make money or attract talent* those were early signs of rot
Is it possible for MU to become new Newcastle United in following years, club with amazing history and fanbase but stuck in bottom of table?
I'd rather utd get relegated maybe then the glazers fuck off
I don't think so, united are way to big for that, they can invest way more than Mike Ashley Newcastle, mid table however, doesn't seem that far off
if they keep up with their points trajectory, relegation is nailed on.
and as a geordie, we'd love nothing more than Man U to take the record back as "the biggest club" to play in the championship again 🤣🤣🤣
It really is just Mctominay, Maguire and Rashford at the moment, replace those guys and you have a proper team
@Black Jock just give ten hag his players to start...
That's the difficult part with these owners. You have to "upstream" the problem.
Oh lordy, don’t forget fred too

Awesome video as always Adrian! Love these longer deep dives into issues at clubs.
United is exactly where Liverpool was in the late 90s. A club that thought the good times would last forever. A big club but not nearly as big as they once were.

Marco Di Vaio is an iconic cult hero in 00’s football, what a player!
I don't know what happened with Rashford. Absolutely shambolic decision making
What happened to Marcus Rashford is the same thing that happened to both Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen. Both got over played, got too fatigue and become very injury prone.
It’s almost as if Man United is the Barcelona of the Premier League. Fallen from grace in more than one way and in some ways sadly irreversibly so.
Thoughtful and thorough. Out. Standing. As always!

Let's face it, if it wasn't for Ronaldo UNITED would have probably of been relegated last season. We absolutely need new talent to make this club competitive again. Because if something doesn't turn around soon we could end up at the bottom 3 at the end of season.
United would have been midtable and United before the Ronaldo buy finished 2nd should've let Ronaldo go and kept Ole because he was building the team and least with him he had direction but being the fucking American Ownership completely screwed Ole and had him sacked and now you ran by bunch of uncohesive forces that ran the club like a AD for a mid tier tv program

Out of topic but I just realised your background is actually really simple (just lighting and plant) but it looks so good.
I love the downfall of United.
Same but I feel bad for my friends that are supporting United. 🤣🤣🤣
With people blaming maguire for everything wrong with united I just have one thing to say, have you seen him play for england?
with a midfield of declan rice and kalvin phlillips infront of him, he looks like a completely different player
in recent games (and in the past) we have seen maguire going off the defensive line and further forward which might be because he doesn’t trust the midfield to cover for them
and i don’t care what people say about this but I think both sancho and rashford would be world-class in a well drilled system like man city or even spurs for that matter seeing how conte has completely transformed them
and you using PSG was a great example along with that, the potential in growth with the change in hands of ownership can be seen when comparing to barca (president in their case) but the person up top needs to have the ambition and hunger for growth and success and above all love the club.
They need a world class R/LB.
seeing a club like man utd like that is really depressing

18:44 What do you mean "Murtough has just begun?" He's been at the club for over a decade, he's overseen a lot of this, Adrian. Look it up.
Whenever i hear Manchester Utd players saying how hard a game was and how things aren't good enough at the moment, I'm reminded of an episode of the tv show Farscape.
Mate United were GIANTS... West Ham are better than us now for sure we are a shambles
Benfica seems like a well run club, at least in the transfer market
Im sorry but it is just wayyyy too easy to criticize on the midfield so much, i do believe mcto isnt the best and fred is limited, but i feel more heart from them than the rest of the team all together, give them a solid defense, give them an attack who try to combine and create action, try to have laterals who actually are attacking minded while being at least OK defensively and yeah maybe change mcto, but these two always seem to have more heart than the rest of the team...
Great video, but to put it simply unless we get owners that care about the club the situation won't change

Literally any midfielder in the Championship would be an upgrade on McTominay.
