ABOUT CIVILIZATION
--------------------------------------
Originally created by legendary game designer Sid Meier, Civilization is a turn-based strategy game in which you attempt to build an empire to stand the test of time. Very cool attention to detail that they have him speaking in a classical register of Chinese, and using the proper form of address for an emperor about himself "寡人", (kind of a Chinese "royal we") rather than a modern form. Top-notch
This audio clips are from the original release of the game, in 2016. They did a good research
Let me add that "寡人" is considered to mean "lonely man", a humble term used by Qin Shi Huang and the other ancient Chinese monarchs before him, because the monarch is considered to be the person at the highest position of power, while the person standing at the summit must be lonely. An ancient poem "高处不胜寒" expresses a similar meaning. In addition, as a Chinese player, I think the civ6 R&D team is really serious about history research!
nobody gives af about that
@@ubuk-5676 you're literally wrong, you're projecting your thoughts on everyone else
@@au8438 I am literally literally wrong actually
His model looks good, better than just his head and shoulders in the announcement.
This new costume looks inspired by sculptures from Terracotta Army, one of the most historical world wonders.😀
I am very impressed. They actually used classical Chinese instead of the modern colloquial Chinese that sounds like it is translated by someone barely proficient in the language.
In early 20th century we still speak like this in official or gentry level, and we still need to learn how to read these and what's the meaning, but hard to communicate with this
And his line did end in a very short amount of generations.
Because you built Wonders before and you’ll build them again, Qin Shi Huang.
Can you improve the UI in the civ & leader selection?
Like, select civ first, then leader (if multiple leaders)
Else, normal civ+leader
I wish they would use items they have more. I want him to whip out his sword when mad for example
I’m still having issues on Mac when i try to load games, it gets stuck on the loading screen, please fix, i literally can’t play the game
Looks very good
The original Qin Shi Huang is focused on wonders, what will the alternate persona's agenda and ability be focused on?
Considering he’s in armor and all, I think it’s some sort of combat bonus that relates to him unifying China into one piece (Considering that China was split into multiple countries and all, basically it was a mess during the Warring States Period till he happened)
@@boaoftheboaians So it might have something to do with a militaristic agenda?
That quote is kinda funny considering there is no loving descendants
Lol at "my line will not end"
Qin got a glow up
I want one of these leaders to focus in a Tall-oriented gameplay
Tall-oriented?
@@mdalsted Few cities with high-pop. as opposed to "wide" which is focusing on having a lot of cities

I for one am hoping Wu Zetian would be a tall oriented leader.

He wasn't just "the first emperor to unite China"
He was China's first emperor, period
Before the Qin dynasty, China was a feudal society
There was the Zhou King at the top, and below him were various Dukes (公), each who were bestowed their own lands, in return for providing military service to the Zhou King when called upon
The Zhou King did not exert any direct control over China, outside of the capital and the lands surrounding it
The Dukes, for all intents and purposes, ran their domains like their own personal kingdoms, swearing nominal allegiance to the Zhou King, and yes answering the Zhou King's call to arms against barbarians when the call goes out
As you can imagine, this led to the decentralisation of power, and it didn't take long for the Zhou King to be reduced to a powerless figurehead, with actual power laying in the hands of the powerful Dukes, who competed with each other to expand their influence
This eventually led to the period known as the Spring and Autumn era, and the Warring States era, where the various Chinese states would openly fight each other for power
This lasted for several hundred years, before the Qin state finally vanquished all its rivals, and established the Qin dynasty, doing away with the previous feudal system, and establishing the imperial system, where power is centralised, and imperial officials are appointed to help the emperor run the empire, instead of having hereditary ranks and titles (and the lands associated with it) being given out
So what Qin Shih Huang did was more than unite China
He transformed China from a feudal society to an imperial society
So, again, he was more than just the first emperor, his reign marked a turning point in the future development of the Chinese civilization
It's interesting to imagine how differently Chinese civilization, and by extension the world, would have developed if China had remained feudal instead of transitioning into an imperial era
One can make a very convincing case that Chinese civilization can actually be divided into two very distinctive parts, the feudal part and the imperial part
The English subtitle to translate what he means makes a little bit mistake
He actually said that "Here you come during the invitation to watch the landscapes of the Qin Empire. And I am the great leader of Qin"(今汝之來也,期日觀,秦國山川之尚,寡人乃秦國之主也)
The subtitles don’t aim to accurately translate what the leaders say in many cases. They simply go with what sounds/reads better to Western sensibilities.
Where is Zhu Di?
When? :O
He looks massive
I may be mistaken, but wasn't Qin Shi Huangdi the only member of his dynasty?
He had a son, Qin Er Shi (lit, "Second Generation Emperor Qin"), who ruled for about three years.
Pretty much
@@cieproject2888 I didn't know that, thanks
*then China collapses apart*
He reigned for eleven years before dying. He was paranoid at the end of life after a failed assassination attempt and started drinking poison from snake oil salesman that convinced him they were elixirs of life. After he died his chief of chariots Zhaogao killed off his generals and loyal advisors such as Meng Tian, Meng Li, his first born son, and the great legalist chancellor Li Si. He then put his second born son Huhui, a weakling, on the throne so he could puppeteer him. Huhui became Qin er Shi Huangdi (second August emperor). Zhaogao convinced the second emperor that he needed to be more draconian with his policies and legalism became much worse. It lasted for six months before the public was in an uproar. The rebellions started when Chen She, from the old state of Chu, was drafted into the military and he calculated that the precipitation would make them late by a day, with Zhaogaos strict legalist policies the punishment for this would have been severe. So instead, Chen She and the band he was traveling with turned to banditry and would shout from the hills “great Chu will rise again” and “Chen She will be king”. After a short while the whole empire was in revolt and dozens of old states sprang to life again revolting against the Qin, in the southern commanderies the local officials founded their own new states such as Nan Yue (which became Vietnam) and Dong Yue. Zhaogao, realizing the issue he was in, sent Huhui away after convincing him that he was going crazy. So Huhui went to a retreat to fix his supposed madness before Zhaogao sent him a letter saying that the enemy surrounded him and he should drink poison to prevent a far worse fate. Huhui did this and killed himself. Zhaogao then tried to put Qin Shi huangdi’s grandson on the throne as the third emperor but he refused. The first emperors grandson was much smarter than Huhui and he killed Zhaogao before taking power. He still refused the title of third emperor however.
Meanwhile, Xiang Yu, the new king of Chu after Chen She was deposed and executed, enclosed upon the Qin capitol of Xianyang where his great military fought many bloody battles against the Qin hiding in their forts along the Wei river. Meanwhile, Liu Bang of Pei (Pei was a vassal state of Chu), and his small army went up the Han river which was lightly guarded and quickly reached the capitol before Xiang Yu, he then talked with the first emperors grandson about peace. They became allies and this enraged Xiang Yu. By doing this, Liu Bang was putting himself in divine favor, it was a heavenly virtue to show mercy to your enemy and this was an act of war against Xiang Yu who was trying to become the next ruler of China. Liu Bang and his army fled and Xiang Yu reached the capitol where he sacked it, destroyed the imperial archives, desecrated the first emperors grave, destroyed parts of the terra-cotta army (which is why today many statues are damaged), and killed the first emperors grandson. He did this in a fit of rage, something he was in frequently. Liu Bang and Xiang Yu met up shortly after where Liu Bang restored allegiance, however, their meeting was described as having the air of danger lingering the whole time, supposedly daggers were fingered as jests were made. Then Liu Bang pretended a weak blatter and was smuggled back to his lines officially starting a ten years war between the two. After a little while of war Liu Bang and his inferior resources fled to the fertile region of Sichuan, which was the backbone of the former Qin empire, where they destroyed all the mountain highways so Xiang Yu couldn’t pursue them. There, they stocked up on resources and added new people to their ranks. It was at this time that Liu Bang of Pei took upon the name Han Gaozu and officially founded the Han dynasty. To this day, Chinese chess sets use Han and Chu instead of black and white, with the Han being black and the Chu being white.
After several more years of war and many miraculous escapes on Han Gaozus part it became clear that heaven favored the Han and Xiang Yu, after hearing songs of Chu victory from Han camps realized his own people didn’t want him. So he went out in a blaze of glory with eight hundred of his best riders, they fought the Han many times with Xiang Yu being responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Han forces. Eventually his riders numbers went from 800 to 100 and then from 100 to 32 and eventually none at all. He reached the ship he was going to escape in and instead let his wife take the ship, and gave his horse to the boat driver, where they went to the state of Wei, where he still had supporters, He then walked away where he found one of his former officers and he said to him “enjoy the bounty the Han will give you” and he slit his throat. The Han then defeated the last of the Chu supporters and founded the second empire of China (except this one lasted for centuries rather than one generation).
Hades better watch out.
Nice to see one of our Chinese emperors also it's kind of weird remind myself he's not some random off me mothman
I wonder if his next leader ability will be: Ten Crimes of Qin.
Let’s not forget his dynasty lasted only a quarter century

This is literally the same line that the vanilla Qin Shihuang said
It's just a re-skin of the character... That's the idea
@@pablor.sepulveda9929 the problem is if you speak Mandarin, you will notice that the line means "would you want to visit the great wonders of the Qin?", which correlates well with the vanilla Qin Shi Huang. But this re-skin features a much more aggressive and warlike Qin Shi Huang which ultimately allowed him to be the first ever emperor of a centrally governed China. It just shows how lazy fraxis is.
Get ready to learn the art of war all over again, everyone.
so is this just a reskin?
He's the "Unifier" so I imagine he'll have changed abilities sculpted more around fighting and taking territory, asserting loyalty perhaps - vs the original who's like already emperor and was about building wonders

He calls himself "Qin Huang Di"? Or did I misheard.
Actually the name"Qin Shi Huang" begins from the time that he had been dead a long time away in History, so he would not call himself "Qin Shi Huang"
"Qin" is the name of the country , and "Shi Huang" means "the first great ruler in Chinese history"
To elaborate, Shi Huang means first august, di means emperor. So in proper Chinese, and how people should say his name, is Qin Shi Huangdi. Qin by the way just says his clan name. Chinese names follow this format: clan name, title, and then given name. So people like the Duke Yi of Zui would be written in Chinese as Zui Hou (duke) Yi. Emperors are the exception since emperor (di) is the suffix of their title. The Han emperor Wu would be Han Wudi (often mistaken for emperor Han Wudi, but this is redundant)
🍦
His Chinese sounds very different
No it’s the same audio
I really dislike the additional spotlight videos which offer zero gameplay information. The first look method of introducing art and gameplay together is better, full stop. These are actively annoying to be notified about
Add more Persian Culture
I think the China leaders is kind of a bad idea. For one thing China already has 2 leaders, both of which are rather underwhelming since the Crouching Tiger unit is garbage and the Great Wall has issues with not giving culture till castles but you need to build them on your border (so you're encouraged to build early but they don't give enough yields till midgame+). Like, unless China itself has its design fixed I am just not interested in play 3 MORE leaders for that Civ.
I see the effort of using classical Chinese. They probably hired some Chinese language service to write these scripts. And there is proper usage of some terms such as "gua ren" for self-addressing of a prince. But overall the script is still a disaster. The awkwardness of some sentences gives me goosebumps, in the negative way. The problem is that most Chinese who think they know how to use classical Chinese because of their high school education don't actually know how it works. And western employers know less how to evaluate their capability.
How many Chinese leaders does a Civ game need?
There are hundreds of civs waiting to be included, but let's make a 2nd, 3rd, 4th Chinese leader. Go get that Chinese market 2K!

…emperor of a unified China.
please don’t have him be military focused. that is the last thing this civ needs.
I agree, they should make it espionage and trade focused. Maybe with unique biological warfare mechanics.
... too late
Qin Shi Huang unified China through waging a massive military campaign and defeating other competing kingdoms. The Unifier is going to be military-focused, guaranteed.
@@MaskofPoesy Based on the actual history, my guess is that the Yongle Emperor leader style will be the one that's trade-focused. He was the emperor who oversaw Zheng He's voyages in the 15th century
Qin Shi Huangdi’s entire shtick is conquest though.
