@@HBMmaster thank you
@@HBMmasterNow I wait to see if the original poster will reveal themselves…
"Go to hell before you die" for Super Paper Mario is honestly genius.
Why for that game specifically?
@@timothymclean in Super Paper Mario, Mario goes to hell. Literally. It's called the Underwhere
more specifically, Mario (and Luigi and Bowser) are sent to the Underwhere without actually having died or even done anything to end up there rather than the Overthere (mario heaven). So they go to hell, without actually having died!
@@timothymclean You literally go to the game's version of hell before you die in Super Paper Mario
super paper mario mentioned !!!
Honestly I also really love that the games are for the most part in publishing order. Thats's something that tends to be missed in We Didn't Start the Fire parodies. Love this!
yeah thats something i always watch for with parodies of this song. this rocks so hard lol.
Especially Fall Out Boy’s cover!
@@austinreed7343that stupid cover istg
@@OrcawsomI honestly don't know why ppl r so picky abt parodies being in chronological order when the original is only vaguely in chronological order anyway, like the decades r in order but within each decade its not super organised. plus a lot of the things mentioned lasted/were relevant for years if not decades so u cant rlly pin them down to one year, like nixon who (unfortunately) was active in politics for ages and red china which has lasted like 80 years atp lmao
@@whatthehelliotthis is why in the original song all things are grouped based on when they first appeared and all people based on when they became popular. there's a lot of ambiguous moments, but none where you can clearly say "this is out of order"
as for nixon, he is mentioned in the song twice, the first time when he ran for president alongside kennedy and the second time when he actually won
Misali’s will literally find any excuse to include kijetesantakalu in their song lyrics instead of going to therapy
Is your pfp Aurora?
@@SugarSpice07 ye
Missed out on exploiting the one instance where writing "Jan" instead of "Misali" would have been arguably not wrong
@@lrgogo1517 wait why in this case specifically?
@@maxwellermeav
Kay, so, in Toki Pona, names of people are preceded by “jan,” a word which by itself means “person.” There have been a few instances of commenters referring to jan Misali as “Jan,” possibly mistaking it for a first name, and unaware that they were essentially just calling him “Mx.” or “the Human.”
I had a silly thought that if @purpleisdebeste had made this error and written “Jan’s will literally find any excuse,” it could be interpreted as “People will literally find[…]”, which isn’t very far off from the wording of the original line I think.
Gotta love how Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games takes up three fourths of a verse
honestly.......big respect for getting the horrifying "kijetesantakalu" in here, making it fit context AND rhyming it, that takes some skill!
2:35 similar
i dont understand this
what? where?
@@670839245 and @biglexica7339 it's at 0:55 in reference to the Tanooki Suit in Super Mario Bros. 3. The suit gives Mario a tanuki tail. Tanuki, or Japanese raccoon dogs, are a canid species important in Japanese folklore. "Kijetesantakalu" is the word in the Toki Pona language for raccoon-like animals. Kijetesantakalu is a joke word for Toki Pona speakers because its length and specificity are against Toki Pona's design principles and stand in absurd contrast to every other Toki Pona word.
@@biglexica73390:55
"mario and sonic at the sochi 2014 olympic winter games" flows far too well
I was like "He's gonna do something weird with that, right? He's not just gonna read the title, that never works in these things . . . . . . ok, nevermind, my mistake"
2:36
I noticed immediately how the words are swapped in "card e-reader DLC" to make it flow. Most parody musicians would just say "e-reader card DLC" and not see the problem. This prosody is off the charts.
@ArchaicEX also on the topic of the original comment; most people would say "twenty-fourteen" but that doesn't flow as well as "two-thousand fourteen"
@@FlamingLily To be fair, 2014 is roughly when we stopped saying it that way.
top 5 lyrics:
1. "Mario and Sonic at the Sochi Two Thousand Fourteen Olympic Winter Games"
2. "kijetesantakalu"
3. "Kung Fu Peach, Patissiere/How many Super Mario games are there?"
4. "Dr. Fire Rosalina/Baby Mario (Koala)"
5. "Rareware Furry Mascot Race/Luigi Wins Standing in Place/This Kong has a Funny Face"

Wheres "go to hell before you die"?
@@Cactus_stupid yeah it should have at least an honorable mention
"jan Misali's Super Mario-based parody cover of We Didn't Start the Fire is so much better than Fall Out Boy's actual honest attempt from the previous year" is a sentence I never thought I would have to type.
Because Jan Misali is skilled and it's Super Mario man
It certainly isn’t something I will
Wait did people hate that one
@@KingOfTheBlobs it wasn't even chronological!
The absolute rollercoaster of hearing the first stanza and thinking "wait, is this possibly my submission?" before everything started going off the rails was pretty hilarious.
I had some unconventional takes but some of these ideas are crazy haha.
I think Punch Ball is when I realized it wasn't me, but I should've been able to tell by the nearly 4 minutes remaining how this was gonna go.
Probably should've realized from the G&W games though, because I think I considered the Mario ones "canon but not mainline," and considered all the rest "non-canon."
And I would've been crazy if I marked DK Jr Math as mainline
And obviously Crazy Kong is non-canon. My brain couldn't think that fast on first watch, haha
Edit: this is incorrect!
Lmao thank you for your contributions to this insane and meaningless debate. Jan copied your post in a reply to the pinned comment.
Eggman doing archery is an absolutely fire line btw
@@TheOoboI don’t think he did the submission that this was based on
yeah, it wasn't my submission lol
wasn't aware the original submission was also straight up written as a song lol
Well, I definitely misinterpreted a few things lol. Sorry about that.
"Yoshi turns into a car / Legend of the Seven Stars / Bowser in the Fire Sea / Stole the super happy tree" is an incredible verse
I'm going to assume they clicked "mainline mario game" for everything
the mario movies are also super mario games?
No because they only included one Mario & Sonic game. So I assume they must be a bot?
@@purpleisdebeste apparently they just wrote their own separate "we didn't start the fire" parody in one of the parts where it asks if you want to clarify your answers. it's in the replies of the pinned comment
Damn I didn’t know chess was a Mario game
part of the games, no. part of the mainline series, yes.@@globalincident694
the kijetesantakalu line is gold but honestly i’m most impressed by the perfect rhythm of Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games
I love how the examples become even more obscure than the real video, rarely is a "We didnt start the fire" parody as well done as this one is🥺🥺
When you really want people to do your survey so you make a banger parody.
obsessed with some of these rhymes, the most hilarious and oddly informative we didn't start the fire parody I've seen LMAO
Dr. Fire Rosalina Baby Mario Koala broke me 😭
There's also a magic the gathering version, "We've got a lot of burn spells". ua-cam.com/video/MaiUUitZbns/v-deo.html
I love how the song gets faster as it goes on. It makes me think of falling deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole to answer the titular question.
The music and lyrics are great (my favourite that I haven't seen mentioned is "yuri curtsy microgame"), but honestly, the video editing here should get some real praise here. Getting all the relevant video footage, putting in footage of other "Super Mario" games that came out within the same chronological period. My favourite has to be the sync "Kung Fu Peach, Patissiere" - not only is it really good footage, but syncing the question of "How many Super Mario games are there?" to Sherlock Holmes Peach was so clever.
i like the line "baby monkey algebra" . it was an intentional reference to the original song's "space monkey mafia" line, right?
i choose to believe the early placement of I am a teacher: Super Mario Sweater was intentional foreshadowing to the tangent in the (as of writing this comment) latest entry in the “How many Super Mario games are there?” series.
The game associated with that video is actually I am a teacher: Super Mario Sweater. Then again, it is the only game to get it's own section like that.
It's extra funny that Sochi specifically is canon, the longest title in all of Mario games.
Also, I would count specifically Wii U Mario Minecraft as canon. Specifically the scrapped Hooktail design of the Ender Dragon. That's all.
Cool trivia💀💀
How do you tell which ones are supposed to be canon?
Not really, crossovers are stated to not be canon in the Mario series.
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games
Joke answer: that's the only mainline game because of how it fits into this song
(Withholding any serious thoughts so as not to taint the survey.)
I love the choices because you get mentions to really weird ports and obscure titles, then very well known games like Mario Kart DS are not in there
I really appreciate with this parody actually doing the games in chronological order, and if they weren't perfect, it was more than close enough to match the original song. Well done!
More people need to make song based summaries of things
I'm sorry but im having constant flashbacks to "you can't fight the Homestuck" it's like two voices in my head are fighting over the song lyrics
For introducing me to "you can't fight the Homestuck", I thank you... I think
@@awaredeshmukh3202 I hope you were a Homestuck fan before that because if not... Well let's just say it's only a matter of time until you can't fight the Homestuck anymore
@@MarkusIfquil I've read the first big section! And then I took a break and tried to read the second section but found I couldn't recall enough from the first section to make sense of it XD
I think it might genuinely benefit from reading with the wiki up as reference alongside, but then there's spoilers! Although, it does strike me as the kind of thing where knowing a fact about the future does not really change your experience of the present narrative, so maybe I'll give that a shot
@@awaredeshmukh3202 after every act there's a recap (except act 6) so even if you forget stuff you can read it there. I don't recommend viewing the wiki because most of the fun comes from figuring out things on your own (plot threads, how certain mechanics work, the story of a character). I also recommend reading it via the unofficial Homestuck collection (a direct application that has everything related to homestuck in it while fixing the games flash breaks).
LEAVE ME ALONE
See this is better than fall out boys because its in chronological order
Fall-Out Boys did a "We Didn't Start The Fire" parody about Mario?
@@timothymclean Fall Out Boy's parody wasn't about Mario. It was meant as an update to the original Billy Joel song about real world events. Some people critique Fall Out Boy's version for not being in chronological order in terms of history. Hope that helps! :)
I like how not only the titles ar in chronological order, but the groups and borders of games are defined quite neatly
80s games (with an instrumental break to separate pre- and post super Mario bros release)
90s games
00s games (I assume the instrumental break is on the border where the modern style of Mario emerges) to 2015 (maybe a shift 5 years to fit 10 years in the next verse)
2015-2024 (basically until now)
I think the borders also mark eras and I think Mario wonder starts a new one
Isn't 2010-2015 it's own verse? The chorus does play between the 2000s section and that one.
idk why, but jan Misali singing "Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games" over 3 bars of the song feels so satisfying to me.
I love how every new thing on this channel is just a ploy to get more people to respond to the mainline mario survey
Parodies of this song are always impressive, especially ones in historical order! But I know the actual results video is gonna drive me insane MAMA MIA
I feel like like "argue X is a Mario game" could be a good game
E.g. Chess is a Mario Game as Super Mario Chess shows Chess and Mario take place in the same universe
Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone is a Mario game as it has Chess in it which, as we've already established, is a Mario game
Two astronauts stare at a TV screen
Front astronaut: So it's all St. Elsewhere?
Rear astronaut: Always has been
What's the goal of the game?
@@DavidSartor0 word associate it to mario
@@qwertyuiop.lkjhgfdsa Thank you for answering.
"Chess is a Super Mario Game because you can say 'checkMario' instead of 'checkmate'."
Is this of equal quality to OP's version? This seems like a very easy and boring game; find a part of the game which starts with 'm', and you win.
@@DavidSartor0 Disregard that previous reply. The association must be made by the _presence_ of an element that belongs to a previously-established Mario game. In OP's example, Super Mario Chess establishes Chess as a super mario game, which subsequently establishes Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for the PlayStation, a game which features a playable version of Chess (an established Mario game) also a Mario game.

I like how every time the song says "if Super's in the title means the game is vital", the game shown on screen has "super" in the title and is more-or-less definitively not mainline.
You included Mario Super Sluggers.
I always remember that game when it comes to my mind the argument of Super being in the title for a game to be mainline.

misread the title as "how do we know what's mainstream?" and thought you were about to sing a song about how the immediate availability of most aspects of culture thanks to the open source-edness of the internet has thinned borders between communities and created a massive voice for independent creators, so much so that "internet celebrities" are pretty quickly approaching the status of "real" celebrities, and that it's becoming harder and harder to accurately predict what someone would consider "common knowledge" or is believed to be "mainstream media".

I was absolutely not expecting to fw/ this. I instinctively moved to the new jan Misali rectangle in my subs without reading, but noticed " parody)" in the title and cringed with realization as my finger was already in the act of depressing the mouse button. I'm not... the biggest? fan of music parodies, or of the song being parodied, or of the parodier's,,, _acquired_ taste in digital instrumentation? (also, I thought from the opening text that this song was going to be on "cute fraud" levels of inside baseball.) But, somewhere between the small break and the first chorus, I realized, _wait. This song is FUNNY! These lyrics aren't missing!_ I am in awe, possibly arousal, at the way Misali makes every chapter in history sound like The Dumbest chapter in Mario history.

This sounds like one of those good old Newgrounds bangers, and I mean that in the best way possible.
Honestly, I imagine two "mainlines"
One is every 2d platformer starting at the NES Super Mario Bros
The other is every 3d platformer starting from SM64
The rest are "spinoffs"...kinda. A lot are their own series (ex. Mario Kart or Sports), but the ones listed above are the "main" mainline.
Edit: Concerning remakes, I imagine its like a flashback. Still mainline, just not chronologically
So where do you put super mario world 2 yoshis island. That is a 2d platformer after the NES SMB where "super mario" is in the title

I guess the only resolution here is that you should sing more with and without autotune and I'll try to give a more precise compliment
