    Great video... Very nice explanation. Unfortunately some people not even after watching this video will understand how to read a bird meter....

    Just heard you on Ch. 26 skip talking to Bobcat about your ground plane. Quarter to 11am on Thursday 6-18-20. My setup is a President McKinley, RM Italy KL-503 and a Stryker SR-A10 mag mount set up on an old air conditioner on the deck of my condo. My SWRs were a bit high. But I took a couple of spare Wilson 1000 whips and laid them across the coil housing of the Stryker to act as radials and now I've got a 1.0 on Channels 20 and 40, and a 1.4 on channel 1. Used the McKinley's built in SWR tester and also double checked it with my MFJ 870 meter. I guess conditions were better last night because I was able to talk to Bobcat and White Lightning in NC, from CT. Nobody seems to hear me on 38LSB though.

    Preach it brother. I have bird meters in average, peak and reflect. I use a Comet 550 and a NanoVna for analyzing antennas and feed lines. I would NEVER trust any CB wattmeter for SWR

      That MFJ is a nice meter, but chances are it will still differ from a bird on the readings slightly. I would certainly rank it above a dosy on quality though. The analyzer is a must in my opinion. I learned early on to not trust the swr reading on a watt meter. I had dosy that would show a flat swr. Little did I know my real swr was 1:7... And I always wondered why i kept blowing up transistor amps, 15 years ago.
      I hope you're doing well my friend!

    Great instructional video. You could probably go more in-depth on driving amplifiers. like the question is it really worth driving the snot out of a radio or amp just to get a little extra power. When virtually do nothing on the s meter or the way people receive you ? Just an idea

      People seem to enjoy the informational videos, so I may do some more in the future. I'm by no means the know if all guru, but I've learned a lot the hard way and am more than happy to share advice, experience, and information that I believe to be vital.

    Thanks for the video. Question for you: I'm going to be laying out around 260 ft. of coax from my shack to my antenna. Will that Bird help me in determining how much power loss I will have while transmitting my 100 watt transmitter to my antenna? And if it does give me the power loss at that distance at 100 watts, if I then use a 1000 watt amp, do I just multiply the 100 watt power loss reading by a 1000 to determine the same power loss at 1000 watts? The reason I'm asking this question is I'm planning on installing an HF Loop Antenna and at 80m and 40m, I can't use more than 300 watts before the antenna starts to arc and gets damaged. At 20m, the antenna is rated at a maximum of 800 watts. So in retrospect; say my power loss is 30 watts at the 260 ft. coax length transmitting at 100 watts, only 70 watts will be seen at the antenna where as using 1000 watts, 700 watts will be seen at the antenna. I apologise if I confused you a little. I hope you can understand what my question intales. 73 from N3NQP!

      To answer your question in short, No, unless you put the meter at the end of your transmission line. If you want to know loss just Google the loss for your specific cable.

    What is the length of coax from radio to meader also coax to antenna

    • @Rooster_Radio
      @Rooster_Radio  4 роки тому

      This is a question that doesn't have a simple answer. Hopefully I can address it in a future video, but it really comes down to how you tuned your antenna to begin with as to what length to use and if length even matters

    Tim trent blew many amps because he used a DOSY ...

    • @Rooster_Radio
      @Rooster_Radio  4 роки тому +2

      That's unfortunate, but sadly it happens all the time. I've seen it over and over again. Bird meter says a radio is doing 35 watts peak, and the dosy only shows 25, so they will hook up a radio that shows 35 on the dosy and it's showing 45-50 on the bird. As a result the amp ends up blowing up because it was overdriven, according the recommended drive using a bird as a reference.
