- We're braving the cold winter in Maine to bring you a 1984 Nauticat 33 Ketch-rigged Motor Sailer sailboat for sale. This sailboat just had a full survey done on her with suggested repairs totaling $23,000USD... which will be very helpful for the next owner (and also during negotiation). This episode includes a full breakdown of the work that would be required to make her sparkly.

Long time watcher first time commenter. I bought a 1985 Nauticat 33 in 2017. Grew up sailing in Hawaii and the pacific. lived in California for 20 years but now I’m living in Vermont. I was feeling somewhat landlocked and really wanted to get out on the water. I found a one owner Nauticat 33 in excellent shape and brought it down to VT from Quebec City. I am in love with the pilot house. The boat is tough, capable and a great performer for it’s size. Its like a tardis, bigger on the inside. It had been completely redone from the deck down when I bought it and I have enjoyed it so much that I have it back up in Quebec this winter getting all new rigging, navigation and safety systems. Taking it out the ST Lawrence to the south coast of Newfoundland in the spring and down to Portland Maine. I’m excited to see what it can do on a larger body of water. There is an active community of Nauticat devotees in Europe and the 33 seems to thrive in the North and Baltic seas as well as the English Channel and the bay of Biscay. I am thinking it will feel right at home on the western side of the Atlantic. Making my lists, checking them twice and getting very excited for a spring sail.
Sell it to me!
Never seen one. Impressed! Needs work thou.
This boat is going to Vermont this spring and will be on Lake Champlain.
@@allensularz3087 it was on Champlain since 2017 and is headed for Maine
@@PaulSomerset-ud3yt I just bought the boat in the above video and will be bringing it to Vermont.
Be still my heart. Captain Q has returned and with no less than a Nauticat. Have I died and gone to heaven? For myself this reminds me of a Fisher except for the stancheons vs gunwhale prortection. If I had a North Atlantic passage to make, both boats would be in my wheelhouse so to speak. Just as you said fireplace I was wondering if you could read minds as well. There is a Canadian outfit that makes wall mounted ones, around 11"" by 10 which would do a wonderful job here as an add on. I love the layout of this boat and no gentleman sails to windward anyways. Yes it is old school but what a school. A retired couple could make this a wonderful home without a heart attack. 63 degrees and sunny in Indiana today so it shocks me winter is still hovering over New England. I do go on but this whole episode has been the best of them all. All that's left is for Ran Day's neighbor to offer a tour of the Hans Christian and I can say my life was complete. Love you guys and long may the channel forage forward. Fair winds and following seas.
I keep hoping Captain Q and Randay will find a 37 Fisher to review
@@RicCross Agreed. It would be interesting to get the Captain's take on a heavy displacement North Sea style boat as that. I don't even think they make those anymore.
We have and we will
@@friarfox Think they are still being made, seems like on a contract basis… Google “Neil Marine” or check out Fisher Owners Association… yeah, I spend waayy too much time on YT and the web dreaming of a mythical retirement sailing seas and seeing sights ; )
Thanks for braving the very cold weather to bring us this interesting yacht. I love the pilot house and how spacious it is. Another great video from Caption Q and Ran-Dee to help make Thursdays a little better by exploring the older Yachts for sale in great detail.
Happy to see a Nauticat 33. Very close friends of my parents, almost family actualy, had one and I know this model quite well. A realy comfortable and well built boat.
I suspect the sitting instalation at the exterior helm is an add-on and my parents' friends' nauticat33 had a teak deck.
On the sailing subject I confirm, she's definitely not a thoroughbred 😁, she's a MOTOR-sailer, 70% motor, 30% sail but I enjoyed to be on her, even if for the "sailing emotions" the true sailboat of my parents had my preference.
Excellent bonus about the importance of getting a survey before purchasing your boat !
“While you’re down there checkout that teak” 😂😂😂 I burst out laughing!
hahaha
I liked how you included the survey results with costs of repairs. Goes to show why getting a survey is a good idea! : - )
always a great idea... helps with negotiation too
You know I find myself saying this far to often watching your channel but I really love this boat as it just has so much potential.
Thank you gentlemen for another wonderful tour of an awesome boat.
Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...
Far too often? Impossible! Every single boat is one to love - they all have something unique to make them special.
You’re not alone… we say that on many of the boats (almost all of them!)
Glad to see you back reviewing classic boats!
glad to be back
Good to see you back Skipper. Please stay healthy
Thank you for caring Roman
Another great one! I especially liked the analysis of the survey and the estimates for the needed repairs. And I really appreciate your weathering the winter weather to bring this to us!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Welcome back Captain Q and Randay!!!
Welcome back.🎉
Incredible vessel😊
A great effort Capt, very impressed with the craft.
thank you
Replaced my espar with a Chinese knock-off from vevor for $130 installed in a hour using existing mounting plate and exhaust. Hey I can buy a new one every year for the cost of the espar. Super happy with it after a NY winter living aboard.
One of your best episodes! Nice job on the style and format.
Thank you for watching
Living on the lower Great Lakes and having to clean the driveway once this winter and watching your trials in giving us yet another entertaining review, I should feel some guilt. But nope just appreciation for your efforts and good humour. Funny how I now mentally compare every boat with Randy’s. He made a good choice.
Sheesh you guys are making me cold... brrr... Great tour again! Thank you Captain and crew! 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it go get some hot chocolate and watch again.
@@YachtHunters 👍👍
That's one naughty cat Captain. You guys are champions, thanks for braving the elements for us..Looked to be a floating apartment..Huge boat for this money...love it
felt like it cruise in the winter?
...good to see you back, hope all's well
Thank you Neil
Oh, I love Nauticats! I got one of my licenses on one, a bit bigger than this one tho.
I keep seeing them from time to time here in sweden and it always makes me happy.
Cheers for another nice video
Very cool! Nice history with a great boat. Cheers
Boat looks great and the captain is looking very fit these days I'm happy to say.
Fair winds and following seas gentleman
Love that you did another Nauticat. You've also done the Nonsuch 26 Ultra as well, another fine vessel. I'd love to see a Hans Christian 33 or one of the Nonsuch 33/36 Ultra models. Keep up the excellent work, I know your videos inform and inspire so many of us.
Thanks, Chip! We’d love to check out a Hans Christian for sure… and the ultra models are sweet too.. thanks for watching!
Thanks , another fun and informative episode. CAPTAIN stay safe and health.
Gracias

@@YachtHunters " Obrigado " following Captain adventures from Brazil 🇧🇷 " thanks both for such a fun and knowledgeable content about these amazing classic yachts.
If I hadn't read the title to this video and only watched the intro, I would have thought you were going to review an ice breaker for the Arctic. Thank you both for braving the cold to review this gem. Take care, try to stay warm and have a great weekend both of you.
Sorry! we could have for sure
So glad to see you and Ran Day back braving the wild north and bringing us a fantastic new episode! I can’t tell you how much you have made my day! Please stay well and hope that soon ol’ man winter will loose its hold on the upper Northeastern States. Until the next episode, Fair winds and following seas…..
P.S. Still not a sponsor? Why?😂
Thank you Michael
so glad it warmed up enough for you and Ran-day to return.
Ha!
Miss u Captain Q happy retirement
Hi, CaptainQ and Raaaaandy ,, for the amount of money they want for this boat , what I see it is a lot of boat for the money, even though it’s got a few issues, but then again for its age, it will always have some kind of repair to do , Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 from the big island 🏝️
Nice boat, thank you so much.
Are the boatyard prices you mentioned regular for US? It seems rediculously (!) high comparing with Netherlands, where I live.
3k for hauling out the boat and demasting, 1,5k to MOVE the boat indoors - that's 4,5k in total for getting the boat on land.
I never thought it could be THAT costly anywhere in the world. I'd pay something at least 3-4 times less in Europe and at least 2 times less in UK.
Well…I think getting a survey is essential. Interesting vessel but too much compromise. Below deck comfort important for me as I sit here daydreaming again of boats. I think the fun during daytime is sailing fast but safe and then a beautiful anchorage and a restful sleep on a big comfy bed and a head big enough to be somewhat comfortable without putting my back out lol. Bravo getting out there in this winter stormy weather and doing acrobatic tricks Captain and Randall. I did have a giggle at what others have described as elder abuse.
its ok for you to giggle i suppose
Capt Q + 5 points No Reading glasses needed
Brilllllliant review - thanks for sharing 👍
No problem 👍it was fun to have fresh info at hand to share with you all
the day after Wednesday is named CaptainQday
i just absolutely love these video's
I am a little over 5 minutes into the video and I must say that I am truly in love!!!
😍🥰 Sorry Captain Q and Ran-Day, I am talking about this motorsailer. What a perfect boat for those who want the advantages of both power and wind! It is a perfect combination on this one. Plus....it is very affordable!
Thank you both for keeping my dreams alive by finding such perfect deals.
Give a big pet on the head to Sea Dog for me please.
I doubt this boat will last long enough for me to sell my house and buy it. But, the dream remains alive. That is what matters.

@@YachtHunters I will admit....I love your channel, the both of you and Sea Dog too!
beautiful thanks for showing
My pleasure 😊
Great cold weather boat
Nice captain I like it especially the 90 hp Ford leaman thank you
Thanks I’m on board🏄♂️
Welcome aboard!! Thanks for watching
Captain Q , Turning on the Engine = Raising the Old Iron spinnaker 😉
yup
Great episode...
That's a cool little boat.
Ahoy Capt!
Cheers Jeff
ditto from CQ
I'd love to see you fellas tackle an S&S design Nauticat. The 43' looks terrific. But great stuff as always.
Noted!
Loved the price list, really helps us who are wanting to get into sailing and buying a boat know what to expect and cost, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I like. " Inside the wheelhouse."
Nice boat, it's a sailboat but if you need to get somewhere and there's no wind you can. I don't think I saw any interior varnish that needed to be fixed, I really liked that. With only $3,000 worth of parts needed and $18,000 worth of labor I'm thinking that a determined owner could make her seaworthy for a much more modest price than the boatyard wants. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
we will do the best we can for you al
Hi Captain, love the show. What do you know about the Moody 39cc, 1977 did you ever come across in the US?
It’s an Alex Primrose design, pre Dixon but same boatyard.. thanks
It’s not ThursDAY without the Cap’n & RanDAY!
thanks Jeff
The storage cubby at 18:30, is that light shinning through the hull?
I think if I bought this boat, aside from the punch list of need be's, I would do something with the pilot house. It's got a lot of just empty, dull space. How bout get rid of the single seat on starboard side and put in that wood stove. Next, put in a pilot berth along the back wall...up high enough to avoid the companionway. Probably need smaller windows back there, but I think it would be worth the trade.
Aloha 🤙
perfect location for that fireplace
I really like the notion of a pilot house for sailing vessels. I wonder, though, many are described as motor sailers, which implies a larger engine (higher bhp/ton displacement) and larger fuel tanks. Captain, do you know of any pilot house sailboats that are not considered "motor sailers"? Glad to see you and Randay (or Randall or Randy, (I wish I knew which one he prefers)) doing more videos.
more and more today sailors are opting for large hard dodgers, which, with serous rear canvas ,can make a pretty good stab at a Wheel house...can work on most boats
Sirius DS - There are others.
Those boat-yard prices seem way expensive ! I'd try to get quotes from another yard or two. Seems like highway robbery with the yard knowing that you're stuck there without fixes. I might take my chances and sail to another yard after doing minimal fixes myself.
Man! $18k in labor and $3k in parts.
Made my day.
good
That stove is so clean I could eat my dinner off it. I thank you. If that was a twin keel I’d break open my piggy bank.
sorry you must be in England? or the Keys?
@@YachtHunters Ireland, hoping to spend my final 45 years sailing in cold waters. A pilot house with a little heater is how I lull myself to sleep. Those maintenance videos you post keep me awake! I hope you have a lovely summer Randay!
❤❤❤❤a ty Captain Q nRan day nice boat
she is
The pilot house Nauticats have a cat "B" rating due to the pilot doors. The deck saloon models have cat "A" for some reason
condensation on the front window most likely drips water on that circuit board panel on the Helm.?
good observations certainly calls for an eye on looks like its lasted 35years so far no ?
Nice video - boat yards charges remind me of hospital bills....
Always losing weight in the wallet region… 😂
Wow, what a design. How is there so much space in a boat this size?
an architect with a shoe horn i'm tinking
$1400 to move the boat? WOW!
Nauticat's make great homes on the water. I am not that keen on survey's. They often find work that the local yard loves to do. The really serious stuff they always miss! Given their conditions, the best you will get is a "Sorry".
Fair enough…
What vessel is that at the 7m52s mark? Have you reviewed that one? If so, which # video is it?
This vessel has an accepted offer. I inquired on it earlier this week. Would love to purchase her.
There one in my marina ready to go
The family never left the dock and gave up sailing the world
@@joeldelamirande5792 hummm... and where is that marina ? :-) thanks !
Is there a way to send a email to send you the details
@@joeldelamirande5792 that would be great. It appears youtube keeps deleting my comment with my email address. Hopefully this one works. mjrj423 @ gmail
Go anywhere except upwind. LOL.
Once again , terrific music…….
Thank you should we go on concert tour do you think?
all that space in a 33 foot boat?... my goodness...
really quite amazing
This is a fantastic boat if you want to visit fiords, glaciers or really COLD places. Why any sane person would want to dot that, I have no idea. But apparently there are such masochistic sailors. Me, I want to mostly sail the tropics and subtropics. So, for me, as boats go, not a chance. But for those Braveheart sailors, it looks darn good.
those wheel houses are appealing.
Has the captain been drinking?
Well, he is the captain.
no but maybe he should more
I run two Oldtimer boats and see just tons of maintenance 🥵
The hull isn't insulated. You can see light through the hull. How much does it cost to fix that?
short money especially for a do it your selfer
Any way you get earlier notification 2nd one I missed called them under contract. 😢
gotta be quick
Cool boat, asking price pretty high.
Great presentation though.
The "trailing edge of the keel that protects the prop" is called a skeg...just saying...
en.wiktionary.org/wiki/skeg
What's the hull made of?
F/g
Do it yourself and save 18k in labor.
Some of it will require a yard hand in the work

ditto
👏👏👍👍
thank you for all that

Hey Captain, you didn't take your shoes off.
😂 it was you!
@@YachtHunters Hey, that is one of the perks about being Captain!
I woul really be interested in hearing about your sailing adventure stories. For some reason I feel like you have a few great ones. Maybe in a podcast format? Just an idea, where you would not have to climb. God bless!
I've always been advised that a motor sailor does neither well.
Probably not necessarily true..
@@YachtHunters Probably maybe? 🤣
Ok..OK... realistically....
Can a boat like this, be operated by one person sailing the USVI/BVI...
OH, ONE 60yr SINGLE PERSON. MAYBE WITH A DOG!!!
Didn't see a dinghy but most motor sailers have some means to lift one..
Beyond said repairs,,, how much to actually drop it in the water? Guessing survey approved the electronics.. (auto pilot, radios, safety equipment)
Your Guess, double asking price!!
How long on the hard before that first trip down the ICW to get the hell out of that 60 and below weather...
(Can't see why boats are above South Carolina anyway..)
But to get it to the Bahamas??
best to contact the yard she is in Yakee Marine in Yarmouth me
@@YachtHunters thought I read in the comments, that someone bought it. My question is kinda a general question, can a single person control a boat like this? Unfortunately my couple days ended, and a different dream has now entered my mind...
@8:02
Ran-day be careful what you film. That's elder abuse!
Also, thanks for braving the cold.
his inditement is coming soon don't worry as soon as we wrap up some others
I enjoyed
the survey information, but you need to be tougher on your opinionated appraisal, in order to give a more realistic picture of the boat.
Somehow you got away from doing that.
What, still no sponsorship with Dinty Moore ?
nope waddya think?
@@YachtHunters well, maybe you might try for a beer sponsor??
Does it have a bow thruster on not? You keep going back and forth between the boat you are presenting and the boat of which you have pictures. Side issue. The suggested repairs cost $23,000? WTF! A little clarity please.
Looks like no bow thruster. Based off the other views of the exterior in the video.
no bow thruster they are nice i used one once but i did maneuver the 52' PB without one for 18 years and no fin keel or spade rudder for most of those years .....learn your boat
Bow thruster = side issue? 😅
Got to have a good look at Randay's walk up on each video so you can know the current boat from the other examples.
Am I the only one who was concerned seven minutes into this? 😳😳😳
