What gets me as a woman into art myself, is that why would they force out artist people who happen to be men, who are trained and talented to replace them? This isn’t supposed to be a sex or gender competition, this is supposed to be an industry based on measuring your artistic and writing training, potential and capacity REGARDLESS of your biology or gender. A solution is adding woman, expanding the studio to equal types of people.
And the whole Tumblr thing has me flabbergasted… I don’t even know where to start with how that’s a terrible choice. Like you implied, the types of communities that site attracts is extreme social cults, where their goal is turn anything into a toxic competition. Women who belong to that culture Instigate to ruin each other reputations while smiling at each other’s faces, and anyone who doesn’t fall into an artificial construction of beliefs about control of others based on their gender, race or sex, they will spend years passively harassing.

    Great story guys!
The great Walt Kelly (best known for the old Pogo comic strip that he did from 1948 to his death in 1972) talked glowingly about his time at "Disney University" and all he learned about the comics/animation craft there. I love his work and have studied it so that I can recognize the work he did on Fantasia. The depth of scene and detail he put into the Pogo comic strips made a comic into art, much like the great Windsor McKay in the Little Nemo comics of more than a century ago. His humor was also great. And he was grateful to Disney for helping him develop those skills. To see how far Disney has collapsed is just depressing. Which is why I have made sure to own as many hardcopies of great Disney works of the past as I can. Including a Disney movie briefly mentioned in this video that has all but been stricken from the archives and put in the societal oubliette.

As someone who went to college to study animation and tried to get into the industry, this is not surprising. I gave up on that field years ago when I realized how impossible it in to get hired in the industry unless you know the right people. Friends hire friends, they don't hire based on talent. People who got jobs out of college were guarenteed jobs regardless of their degree simply because of the family and connections they had. They had no desire to work with others and trashed their fellow students. There was no art community then. And it's infested the industry to the point they can't hide it anymore.i hope the industry gets cleansed.

The animation industry, especially at Disney, used to be run by ARTISTS. FINE artists. I stepped away from animation when it shifted to being run by computer nerds. Animation Magazine became a technology platform, period. NOW it's run by social media platformers. I wouldn't go near the industry nowadays with a ten foot pole.

I took that in my stride and didn't react and persisted with my ask. He smiled. He was white, I am black. That was almost 35 years ago. We became best of friends and within a month, me the most junior engineer, ended up sharing a house between myself and 4 of the most senior engineers in the company. I cannot imagine what would have happened if that exchange happened today and he was overheard. Wish is just Sandlot 2 all over again.
Thank you for covering this and not just bringing light to Disney but animation’s or even Film’s plight as a whole.
My sister studies animation as a visualization major and she’s in Japan interning rn. She’s never been super strong, but she always loved animation. I worry for her future. As I’m sure you are well aware, this outsourcing business is a race to the bottom of who will do it cheapest.
Walt was visionary and creative, but men like Iger only care about looking good and buy but never create. This corporatism is the rot of the industry that has been easy prey to “post postmodern” ideology. “Post postmodern” as in these beautiful artworks are picked apart but rather than building something back, they leave it broken and in shambles, unable to be used by culture any longer.
Video Games and Animation I think are becoming more culturally influenced by independent creators, but it’s hard to establish footing when so much is required to be on the level of quality desired by audiences.
I know people talk about the Cold War a lot so when I looked at Yuri Bezmenov’s interviews finally, it was honestly so surreal how much our society’s climate mimics that which he describes. People hate each other and there is no trust.
Legal Mindset was saying that this is possibly set up for AI to take over animation. Activists are useful idiots in this mindset, wherein all talent is abandoned for looking good with diversity and then when reality hits, there is no viable financial option but to use AI. Same happening rn with localizers. I hope he is wrong but the mere idea I see plausibility is terrifying.
The reason why I believe animation to be integral to society is because of the shift away from religion. Looking at the rituals of different cultures humanity had always found religion as a cultural unifier with stories and mythos connecting the people in morality and idealism. Any religion at all was good in that it United a people and its mythos or stories spoke inherently to an aspect of the human condition. In the West That is largely gone from pop culture now. The American mythos of comics and games has fallen victim to this rot already. With nothing left, society becomes demoralized divided and happiness becomes a distant memory.
But, if we can as fans of culture, preserve the core essence of how media speaks to the human experience, it is possible, (not easy) to revitalize the spirit of our society. Which is why I am so invested in this. People may say “culture war is a waste of time,” but I would argue on the ideas of C.S. Lewis that humanity has always been on the precipice of actual war and eradication of its brethren. If there is no time to rest the soul then there is no life to be enjoyed on human terms, only beastly wars that rage ever onwards and act only on base instincts because we neglected to raise our higher thoughts.
    …I need to stop rambling.😅

    • @JohnDoe-wq5eu
      @JohnDoe-wq5eu 9 місяців тому +3

I think the issue is that we have to stop looking to any kind of institutions or industries to bring us the next big things they have stagnated, they are filled with activists and they will be more than willing to use AI when the time comes because it's all about doing things as you said for the cheapest price. Where I see hope rising is from the indies from small Independent artists little groups working independently from the mass market machines. We've seen the big companies cranking out nothing more than slop, drivel so bad that even the masses are turning away and looking elsewhere. Western based games for the most part along with animation and other things like comics have all but been absorbed by the east and all things anime/manga along with the movies. Japan, Korea and China even have helped to change the landscape and counterbalance everything that's happening within culture here in the US/Canada,Europe/UK and elsewhere.
I am a bit sad but all good things must come to an end sooner or later.
Unfortunately what might have taken much longer was greatly accelerated by the hubris and general angry hatred coming from the group now infiltrated within Hollywood and especially Disney. The cancer is far too deep there is no going back now it must completely burn itself out and perhaps from the ashes something better can emerge.

About Tumblr, I remember a UA-camr saying that people create non-white versions of characters of the anime like Princess Jellyfish. Princess Jellyfish is exactly the anime they watch. Not a good anime. Very shallow plot and characters. But they like it because is about characters with no real personality who made their gender, sexual preference, and mental illness their personality. Just like them. And just like them, they don't want to expose themselves to difficulties to develop a real personality.

The problem with Coco is the movie looks like Mexico in 1950 not 1980. In 1980 Mexico had a lot of very popular pop and rock singers. Luis Miguel was a Mexican teen singer and he was very famous in many countries. (a kpop band made a cover of Luis Miguel songs). So the boy in Coco will not admire De La Cruz but a pop singer like Luis Miguel. On the other hand is insensitive to make a movie about the Day of the Death in the 80s in Mexico because of the 1985 earthquake. Many people died that day. (some say a million), So many people didn't like Coco because of that. Is offensive. Who made that movie is very ignorant about mexico.

The WIA stuff is depressing (although not surprising w/ the state of things), as way back in 2004 when I was in college for animation I ran the Colorado chapter. That was before this giant push for "equity" and I set up events at the school with local studios and companies that would come in and do presentations, as well as meetings for networking etc. It was open to women and men and we had a good mix of people but the focus was on hearing from people working in the local industry and seeing the different types of opportunities in a more 'non-entertainment' market.
