- Traveling is GREAT majority of the time. But sometimes it’s hard. This was one of those days. And it just happened to be Holi. Thankfully, it started well with a sunrise boat ride down the Ganges River! // FREE guide to airport lounge access:

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left January 10, 2016. We started this UA-cam channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before Nate turns 30 (which is March 20, 2019)! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
Very honestly, even for us locals in India, it's safest to celebrate holi with family and friends at/near our homes. That's what most poeople do. There are celebrations in local community halls and grounds in major cities and the safety depends on the kind of crowd. Usually family crowds are safe and will respect you and your boundaries. But groups of men do get drunk and eve-teasing incidents are not very uncommon if you venture out on the roads.
For foreigners coming to India, I would advise to get in touch with local families (amazing if you have a local host) and get the holi experience with the family. That would be the most fun and safest way for moth men and women. As solo/group of female travellers, Holi time is best avoided for your trip to India.
Holi can be fun, but it doesn't take more than a few seconds for the fun to turn into your worst nightmare (as was the case with the couple you met in the lobby). It's sad that many Indians tend to take advantage of women in their drunken state and foreigners usually tend to fall victims because they don't know what exactly to expect.
Holi is a celebration of colours and a very old tradition. Wish every Indian celebrated it with the right spirit. Hats off to you guys for your Vrindavan temple celebration and the sheer positivity you possess at all times. Love watching your vlogs :)
Thanks for your advice :)
She is totally on point. We Being from India, would never venture out in any public celebration especially certain parts of the country which has history of ruckus. You guys were seriously brave and throughout this video I was hoping it ends well.
Antarik Anwesan thanks for your wise advice. However I do think it’s important to stop using words like ‘eve teasing’ to disguise sexual assault as something silly and harmless. After all if someone grabbed your balls in a crowd you wouldn’t call it ‘Adam teasing’.
Hmm...I think the eve teasing can happen in North India, 'Adam teasing' and sexual assault are not common at all:)! Remember this is like United nations, on the streets there are rich, poor, educated-not educated, good and the bad all though latter is very small percentage...all at the same place, so you use must the part between your ears:). Walking in a poor neighborhood in India is perhaps safer than such places in a country like USA; lets just say, you should take precaution your take anywhere else in the world. FYI...i have seen the "Adam teasing" of the kind you describe in USA, not in India yet lol. Enjoy travels wherever you are.
TheCurlyclub 😂😂😂😂😂
Hi Kara and Nate,
As a fellow Indian it really makes me miserable and my head bows down in shame thinking about what the couple you met in the hotel lobby went through. There aren't any excuses that we can make, and women's (and everyone's) safety should be our utmost priority. That been said we are really really shaping a new India and most of India's youth are on a really productive path, and we have only love and respect for everyone. It still hurts me, but I promise you that we will together work hard and make India the best experience a traveller can have, and the only worries a traveller will have is to cancel their return flights because they'll wanna stay for longer.
Cheers,
Loads of Love and Respect,
a profoundly impacted Indian.
Nothing's wrong with pointing out the negatives. I think the people who complain are showing their jealousy and lack of understanding about travel. Just like the rest of life, you can't control everything. It doesn't mean you're not grateful. But, it's important to be realistic. Going to different countries is challenging, and sometimes difficult.
Nubianette racist spotted. Always negative about India. Western media brainwashed. Shameless.
Get rid of negatives. You might see light
mayank kumar i am indian too, but u are stupid. Don't be over nationalist
Nubianette, that's true. Sometimes it is difficult to travel overseas. No getting around it. Also, it's not just us as Westerners going overseas, but others coming to the USA or Canada, or European countries, either as tourists or as immigrants. When the food, language, customs, etc., are different, it's a challenge.
mayank kumar you need to understand that India has a problem with the way it treats its women and help to solve it and stop it, not hide it and pretend it does not exist.
Varanasi is a pretty gross place so you were lucky that you didn't get something worse.
Born and raised up in India. I would not play Holi with strangers or go near them. You will be touched, groped by them on the name of festival or fun. Also some people do not use good quality color and chances are you would damage your skin with skin reaction or allergy.
For street food: please avoid anything that is not boiled/cooked and has water in it (lassi, chutney, sugarcane juice with ice etc).
Stay safe, love you guys and your videos.
thanks for being honest most of the Indians suffer from hyper nationalism and they just don't want to hear anything negative about India
@@Bobby-lv2kr i can understand. I am from india. We Indians need to acknowledge the shortcomings of our country. Sorry if any indian was rude with you in the past.
Can u guys clean your fucking water literally 95% of foreigners shit their pants in your country. Do you guys enjoy having tourists shit themselves or something??
@@deliciousvegans4505 dude, India we dont use tissues to clear our shit after, so maybe you drank water that is used for cleaning after you take a shit.. you need to know which one to drink and which one not. :D :D
@@dhruv19911 No, ALL your water is contaminated. Even people who shower in "5 star" hotels in India get fucking diarrhea from the bottled water they provide. China gets a lot of crap for being unclean but India is the dirtiest fucking shithole I've ever seen by far
Thank you for being honest about your experiences in India. As Nate said, 95% of the experiences are positive. But you do have to use common sense when traveling. Half of my trips to India (7-8) were by myself. I never once felt in danger or afraid. India is a beautiful country. Thank you for sharing that beauty with the rest of the world!
You are on point! I think it is about doing your research about the place you are travelling to. It helps with the expectations. There is nothing wrong with being cautious!
thankyou sooo much for your positivity...😊
You are absolutely correct..India has goods and bads just like any other country, if you don't do your research, you have chances of having u pleasant experience.
i live in india. So i would advice tourist who want to celebrate holi to celebrate it in private celebration or in metro cities were it is relatable safer. As a local we also don't just go about to celebrate it on roads just like that. We usually have friends or neighbors and family to celebrate with. In smaller cities holi scenerio is bullying more than celebration. People drink on holi in metros too but the scenerio is not bad as u described
Views matter for them i think!
Big cities especially Mumbai are the safest bet when it comes to Holi celebration.
Great advice. I was thinking just about the same.
Cities like Mumbai are the best when it comes to Holi celebration. You will have tonnes of private parties and no rowdy crouds
Arvind Gupta not at all, this is the 71st country they have visited which includes the Middle-east and Africa. they have never given a negative impression of any country until now. I have followed their vlogs since they started and they are not the type of people to make things up for views.
This video might be one of my favorites, to be honest. First, the editing was beautiful, as usual. That fire ceremony looks like it was an incredible thing to witness. Second, we all appreciate your honesty! So many people watch and take advice from your vlogs, it's important to up-front with them. And third, I like that you used your growing platform to create a discussion in the comments! You're inspiring others, but also creating space for people who are really knowledgeable to provide advice.
Thank you, and I'm glad you both weathered your sicknesses ok!
I agree with your comments Suzi Clark. This was a beautiful episode of Kara and Nate's travels. Such wonderful videography and editing. You guys have improved so much over the last year or two! Thank you both for giving us an expanded view of the world, and it's amazing variety of people/customs/beliefs.
This is a fantastic comment. I actually wanted to say something like this but ran out of time this morning on my way to work. They truly are the best, and what every travel vlogger... heck, every VLOGGER, should strive to be.
Agree. Thank you for being upfront about the realities of travel. We appreciate your honesty and not just sugar coating. I have been to 60 countries myself over 4 decades and know it is not always roses but would not give up anything for seeing foreign lands! And I have been to the” hospital” 3 times which have mad e me wiser and given me great stories to tell too!
Suzi Clark I agree with you Suzi. When you watch Kara and Nate through all their VLOGS it is as if they become somewhat trusted “friends”. I would take great notice of what they say positive and negatively. I know they like to be positive and many times it is due to the fact that they do not want to be insulting to someone’s culture.
Thanks so much Suzi! ❤
I'm so happy that the hotel gentleman was so respectful and kind about keeping Kara safe. That could have been a traumatic experience if you weren't aware of the roudiness of the crowd. Thanks for all you do and allow us to experience along side you!
Holi parties happen at almost all 5 star properties across all metros. Cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore. These places are safer. The roads tend to get filled with the urchins and the unsavoury people who you wouldn't want to meet. Especially in certain states which are notorious for their lawlessness. So it's EXTREMELY CRUCIAL that you do your homework about the property you're staying at, the locality, city and state to ensure your safety. I'm Indian and I love my country but there are problems which we can't ignore. I want all tourists to have great experiences here, so it's important you guys visit the right places.
God’s protection was with y’all! He is always present. Glad you’re feeling better!!
Provided and hopefully you all believe in God! The world is a big place and there’s a lot of “darkness “ out there and we sure need the protection of God especially in traveling to unknown places in the world!
This video, guys. This videos was great, and very important. I know you try to keep the tone of your channel positive, but I think it's so good that you always keep it real as well. This is what sets you apart from other travel vloggers. Also, I'm so sorry that Nate was sick... BUT... God works in mysterious ways. Maybe it was the way to keep you inside, where it was safe. Love & healing hugs to you. ❤
Can't agree more
Thank you so much❤
Omg hahhaha it's you again I think I see you commenting on almost all of their vids! :p I'm a huge fan of them too
What god?
Lilian P LOL, hi! I have tried to comment at least once on all 500+ of their videos (sometimes, several times on the same video and I fear I may seem stalkery, though I swear I'm not!). I always want them to know I support them, that I appreciate them, and how much I'm loving all the places they've taken me. They quickly became my absolute FAVORITE people online (and I imagine offline too if I ever got the chance), and that's saying something because while I don't watch a ton of YT channels regularly, the ones I do truly matter to me quite a bit. I'm so glad you're enjoying the journey as well. :-)
You guys are so positive and forward thinkers that it actually makes me feel refreshed. Love you both! :D
Comments like this one make us feel refreshed! :)
Holi in varanasi is crazy. Kind of intimidating for foreigners.
My request, donot over-do anything.
Stay healthy.
I think it's important to share the bad stuff so people don't get an unrealistic idea of travel. Thank you for the info and hope you're feeling better!
its actually not safe for women to go out on the streets on the day of holi. most of the people are intoxicated with booze and bhaang and they get very physical and rowdy. But this is not the case in every state in India. There are lots of places where it is very safe and women do go out and play holi, such is not the case in Varanasi. It is always advisable to go to private holi parties and enjoy there...
I appreciate you guys always including both positive and negative aspects of the places you visit in your vlogs. Setting expectations is so important and I'd hate to go somewhere thinking it would all be peaches and roses if that wasn't the case and wind up disappointed, but if I know what I'm getting into, I'm much more likely to be interested. Although, of course, I enjoy how upbeat and fun your channel is in general, I'm really grateful that you show the reality of it too. Also, now I know that Holi is probably not for me, I was thinking even on the first day that the crowds where you were would be dense enough to make me panicky, let alone when you were in the temple! Looks like a blast though.
I celebrated Holi 2018 in Rishikesh and felt pretty safe being outside. Myself and a friend were traveling as two female travelers so were a little anxious about how Holi would be. We met a group of girls at the hostel we were staying at who spent Holi with us. We all bathed in the Ganges afterwards which was such an amazing experience (its much cleaner than in Varanasi)
I'm Indian and I think you're one of the most positive people ever , it's amazing how you've not complained about all the discomfort you had to go through . I'm sad you had to experience bad things 😭😥
I have literally been watched you guys for more than a year and it does not get boring, your videos are amazing
Thank you❤
U guys are the best travel vloggers on UA-cam. The content u make is awesome showing both negative and positive aspects of travel. Glad you both are okay and once again thumbs up 👍👍for the best vloggers
Thank you!!!
and i found one of my bohri mate in the comment section 😂👍
Murtaza Laxmidhar dude😂😂👍👍
The best and safest place to celebrate holi is to celebrate in a cosmopolitian city like Mumbai, specifically Bandra and South Mumbai.
You are entitled to be honest and say how u feel without sounding bad. But I understand that you wanna choose your words carefully cause people go nuts in social media behind the screen and starts disliking you for being honest.
A temperature of 103 is dangerously high. Waiting it out was not a good idea. You two got lucky that nothing serious happened as a result. The Ganges river is soo polluted. I wouldn't have even chosen a boat ride especially on such a little row boat. Make your health a priority when you travel. Stay safe!
There is negative for the "sport" of being negative and then there is negative in the form of constructive concern; this video is the latter. Kara and Nate have had one experience on one celebration in a country of 1 billion plus people which I write for context, not criticism. Excellent work.
Getting sick was a blessing. HE is protecting you.
Please dont be scared to show travel realistically, and your honest reactions to the situations that you encounter. It's important to show others who want to travel what to expect. Im glad you're both feeling better, blessings be.
Sierra Brown I think when I'll travel west I'll show the real western world.
Somak Chatterjee for a change you can have such urge to work for betterment of your own country rather than ranting about others'
Wow, that intro is fantastic! How you have that wonderful fade behind the coffee cup - great job with that, Kara!! So cool.
Kara and Nate - this was one of my favorite vlogs so far. I love that you can show all aspects of a place instead of just the good parts. Don't be afraid to be honest with us. Life isn't only joy - it's understandable that you'd have good travel days and bad, and that each place would come with the same dichotomy.
Nate it's pronounced as "Ganga" and not "Ganja"😃
Btw loving all your videos. Being an Indian and watching a foreigner making such good videos about India is amazing. Hope you had a wonderful time being in India.
You understood what he meant, did you?
This was not a good video about India, this is absolutely the worst country out of the 71 they have ever visited. They met a recent victim of rape, how are you telling them to have a wonderful time? Furthermore you can tell that Kara is being harassed she always has more color on her than Nate or any other Indian around her, and creepy random guys asking her for a selfie and putting their arms around her.
Tan first of all, it is made pretty clear in the video that the lady wasn’t raped, and second, they are just showing the reality in that part of the world during a holiday. This does not make the video terrible or anything, it just shows how different the culture is over there. Granted, this is probably not an aspect of life in India that natives want foreigners to talk about, but this problem seems to be prevalent in that country, people have to be aware this is going on.
Martin C. I know it reflects reality, read my comment again. I am not saying that they should censor any of their vlog or that they are deliberately making India look bad. I am telling him how bad and backwards India is and asking him how delusional he is to think they are having a wonderful experience at this point. Seeing a girl sobbing after being attacked by a group of men is horrifying. The way these men use a selfie as an excuse to put their arms around Kara is also just creepy. I also noticed she had more color put on her than other Indians and Nate, I'm guessing because its a physical action. They want to act positive because they are vloggers and their subscriptions and views depend on it, which is why tjis video is packaged in the most positive light possible. At one point in this video Nate said they wanted to take a selfie only with Kara always and at another point he said he can't complain about the powder giving him congestion because it is no where close to what kara is getting.
dude Tan, chinese have a history of mass rapes, mass killing and pillaging.
a guy from gilgit (Pakistan) told me how your Qing empire soldiers raped and brutally killed their people and gilgit ppl still harbour hateful feelings towards chinese.
learn from your history and stop stereotyping ppl because too much stuff to stereotype you ppl as well.
Ooooohhbhh nice new intro coffee thingy..... Also miss you guys x
Thanks guys 💜💜💜 missing y'all more!
Totally agree! 🤗
I think this is the best filming channel on UA-cam! Such good quality!
At 8:27 it is so cool to see the contrast in humanity. Seeing the younger person on a skateboard and the older man sitting in prayer clothes
The safest way to celebrate Holi is to watch it on UA-cam
Hahaha.... I think that is a very profound and true statement.
Ha ha..on TV may be..
Funniest comment of the month
With u near and dear ones within a society.
When the men get so pished that they do that to the women? I think you're right, my friend. Such a shame..
I went to India on an exchange programme last year for two months and also got sick. Exact same symptoms as Nate :( My host family mom was a doctor in India, and she said it's the street food and the water used to clean pots in restaurants/hole-in-the-walls that causes those symptoms. It really makes you appreciate your health! I was there for Diwali and still have such good memories from it! Holi is definitely on my next thing to do! You guys really inspire me to travel more! I hope you enjoyed India and learnt a lot (like I did!) and enjoy Myanmar x
My friend and I did Holi in Nepal and had an amazing time. We stayed in Pokhara and being at lakeside was super safe and everyone was very friendly especially as we were two 19 year old English girls. It was a beautiful place to celebrate the main festival is celebrated at the lake and everyone walks up and down covering each other with colour and dancing in the streets. Would definitely go again!! Holi is celebrated just as much here as in India but it’s a lot safer and less extreme.
It's simple, you guys are visiting the most crowded places to celebrate the festival which is mainly for Masses, My advice is to get to West India or south India where it is less crowded or much better would going to hill stations like Kullu, Manali,Rishikesh etc where it is safe and also you get to experience the culture
PS Even Indians are afraid to celebrate Holi in Varanasi, so it's not that they harass just the foreigners, they would do the same to Indians (those people are just set in their own pathetic, cruel way ). It's better to avoid those celebrations.
hey nate and kara.. i am from delhi and one of your subscribers. i usually never comment on anyone's vlog., however you guyz have compelled me to mention this. i have been following you, you guyz are wonderful and doing great.. but but.but.. your choices are quite wrong while travelling india. you have not explored delhi really well. vrindavan was fine but hats off. i would not dare to go there during holi and i am an indian😂... you have missed delhi completly. i stay in new delhi and old delhi is overwhelming for me, forget about westerners. you commited all those mistakes which a typical traveller would make. varanasi.. omg.. why why why.. try offbeat places.. ask me anything you want. i would be glad to help. beaches/ mountains/ monuments/ i can help you plan for rest of india. cheers..n tc. love you both ☺️
Travelers visit Varanasi because, as I understand it, it is one of the most important cities in the Hindu religion. This is similar to the way in which visitors to Rome (Catholic or not) will usually want to see the Vatican.
Beauty is subjective. Kara and Nate finds beauty in wherever they visit and they loved it, I see nothing wrong with that.
These two people are not a couple of rubes. They have traveled extensively throughout the world and I'm pretty sure that they knew what to expect in India. Varanasi is a well-known destination for domestic and international tourists due to its religious and historical significance. If there are things that make people uncomfortable there, perhaps they should be addressed and improved rather than ignored.
Barb hey barb, please ignore people who have bad mouth. intent of my comment was not to start a war 😝. i rrspect your opinion however please note i am hindu myself and varanasi is not a travel destination on our list. if i plan to see filth, crowdness only then. heck i would not even like to get cremated at varanasi. i have a better crematorium in new delhi😂😂😂. unless someone wants to witness cremations on their travel adventures, they should refrain. i also acknowledge the fact that westerners are curious about different culture traditions and they find it fascinating but some things are well left ignored😛. oh ya please don't compare rome, you cracked me up on that 😂😂😂😂😂😂. cheers n peace
Barb - There are many travelers who say they love Varanasi - but if that was their first destination in India - they would have hated india forever. Some others travel there first and love it - because they find india exactly how they imagined - like a caricature. Visiting Varanasi on Kara's birthday and on holi was a bad idea. Going from the executive lounge in the airport to the tiny cheap room in chaotic Varanasi - on your birthday must have been such a turn down. Lol. It's a good place, but you need to let it grow on you. The place - Varanasi does have substance.
I AM LOVING THIS CHANNEL. THANK YOU FOR THE HONESTY GOOD AND BAD. KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING!
I so appreciate the candor, respect, and positivity in your videos -it really sets you apart. I’m glad you’re safe, get well!
I never understand why Varanasi is a tourist attraction - it's dirty, polluted and underdeveloped. If you want to see the Ganges or get spiritual, try Rishikesh or the many other ashrams present in the south.
Sudipta Adhikary because what you get here you cant get anywhere 😊
Swastika Agrawal if you're talking about gau mutra and dung in the streets, it's found in other places of India too, just not that much.
like those things dont exist in the places you just mentioned.
Sudipta don't worry its beyond your understanding.
Omg.. So freaking true..I think only old religious people should go there.. And yes Rishikesh 1000 times better than baranasi... Or haridwar for example.
So glad that you both have come through this ok and really the rwo days rest would be good for you both. There is nothing wrong with talking about the not so good stuff actually it's good because others then can be prepared so y doing this you are doing a great service. Things happen in our world which we cannot change but there is always the people the locals that have hearts of gold and generally care for others. We have had Bangkok Belly x 2 and Hawaiian Belly I think sometimes it the luck of the game stay safe and when you are covering large areas you should put in a few days of real rest please. As when you arrive you looked spent see ya
It's really sad that some people harassed that girl. Knowing this I feel terrible as an Indian. I wish people stop all the rowdiness and celebrate this festival with joy and harmony. Also if any such situation occurs people should immediately call the police then and there. Also really glad to know you both are feeling better! Stay healthy and keep on making such amazing vlogs. ❤
Have to this this is spectacular. You guys are amazing, you coverage and filming are truly inspiring. Although I would not have travelled to India, I would love to see what you two have covered. Amazing culture, historical and your so respectful. Well done 💙
Best couple in the world ❤❤
Your editing is great! Thanks guys!
I’ve been following you guy for a while now and I really enjoyed all your vlogs, and it’s just getting better! I’m glad you are feeling better. Travelling is not always easy and people who wants to travel needs to know that. I think vloggers sometimes get lost trying to catch the perfect drone shots and miss sharing the real journey of their travels. Anyways thank you for sharing all of it and safe travels! Peace from Canada
Such a beautiful video. Also, I was wondering about travel and illness, it must be scary. Thank goodness you were in a hotel and not an air bnb, that's how I see it. At least someone knows you need help and how to get it for you. P.S. Your Indian viewers already had your back from your first Holi video, but you know that. Love from New York, when you come here, let me be your tour guide!
I'm so sorry you guys got sick. Hang in there and keep up the great work. And thank you for being honest, your fans do need to hear the bad along with the good.
Ganga Aarti was awesome in the evening !
I'm so sorry you didn't get to have a better experience in Varanasi . It's my favourite city in the world, so far, and there is so much to experience in those mysterious galis. I hope it didn't take long for you both to get feeling back to normal. You are both so resilient and adventurous. You are an inspiration, even in the difficult days!
So sorry you were both sick. Glad you're feeling better ! Great vlog as usual. Safe travels
The best part of traveling the world is experiencing great cultures, eating great food and connecting with locals. With traveling, it does take a toll on body and mind. Always remember to take it slow at times, hydrate and have a good balance in vegetables and protein. I mentioned the bad side of holi privately to you about your friend , CupofTJ and her friend that encounter a bad incident during Holi. Men was surrounding one of the girls and got bit too close. With travel, it’s easy to get lost in any beauty of a city. But always remember to be smart and always trust your gut feeling and in the mist of bad things, there are still some good people that always warns us of harms way and scams. Beautiful blog imo, informative and respectful of culture , traditions and life along the Ganges river.
It's a good thing you let people know if there's something they should be aware of even if it's something negative and not so nice... And I have to say your "negativity" is not really even a thing, you still make everything feel positive, despite of the struggles:D That's one of the reasons I like watching your videos:)
I really enjoyed your clip. As an American living in Shanghai, China. My partner and I are planning a trip to India during Chinese New Year 2019 and found your video engaging, well edited and down to earth. As a seasoned traveler myself - there’s certainly nothing wrong in exposing the ups and downs of international travel. Thanks!
Love your channel!!! always have me anticipating the next upload at the end of each video, everytime!
Footloose - and brave! Varanasi during Holi. Hats off to you guys. Keep sharing your adventures - and stay safe & healthy!
Hi! I'm from the US and my husband is Nepali. Nepali culture is very similar to India (Hinduism is main religion) and celebrating Holi in Nepal is MUCH safer. I've been four times and stayed for six weeks each time, and not once have I had a problem or felt unsafe. I've heard horror stories about the men in India, and Holi in Nepal is a blast! I know of so many western women who travelled alone in Nepal and have never had an issue with men. Hope this helps someone!
Being an Indian I never enjoy playing Holi with strangers...Holi must be celebrated with friends, colleagues or people whom you know.....for foreigners playing Holi with people in the street is a strict NO....if you do it for adventure do that at your own risk....most people get drunk in the Holi and unpleasant things are highly likely to happen.....so for foreigners my advice would be play Holi only if you find like-minded people, friends in your Hotel or where you are staying otherwise just refrain from participating in it, watch it from a distance, take pictures and enjoy....there are millions of exotic things in India which you can experience and enjoy....so don't be so upset if you don't get a chance to play Holi....your safety is much more important than taking part in a festival.....and if you want to have a completely different experience of Holi then come to Birbhum district of West Bengal in Shantiniketan, the place of Rabindranath Tagore....in my personal opinion here you can get the best Holi experience in entire India....Holi mixed with the celebration of Culture, with Song, dance, drama and lots of things.....and here it is quite safe....
Keep it real! The good, the bad, the great, the not-so-great is what makes me watch Vlogs in general. I have unfollowed any that are always happy and perfect. Life isn't ALWAYS perfect and neither is full-time travel. Real is best. I would rather you admit that some of the dives you guys stay in are not great. One time recently Kara said "and our hotel is great!" when clearly it was a dump (or would be a dump in the US!) Then Nate said "well, it's okay" or something to that effect. Just stay REAL!
Isn't that what a relationship is meant to be ? You are with each other through ups as well as down. Seeing you two together through this is what makes the video so wonderful. I believe all of us loved this and all our thoughts and prayers are with you.
The Ganges and the ceremonies can become overwhelming. But glad you are coming out of it with the experience.
Keep going guys. Keep connecting.
Loved this vlogs. And I think it's great that you took the time to give some advice about Holi and India. It's a very different country and culture and sometimes we need to help each other to be safe and enjoy the time there.
Mily Alvarez racist spotted. Western media brainwashed. Always negative about India. Shameless
mayank kumar loser spoted! Always blaming the "western" hahahaha I think you need to learn to properly understand what you read since I didn't say anything negative about Inida hahahahaha loser
Sorry , he is just 9
Mily Alvarez miss, holi is safe when you are in private party with people you know or celebration of holi in temple's with huge public gathering is also safe . Even we local people go out to only those places which is well known to us .Since most of the people are over drunk , this may result to something which no one wants to happen !!
You must be safe in India. It might look like the men are being friendly when they try to take selfies and hug and touch you but its not innocent as it feels. They have ulterior motives and are trying to take advantage. Be safe as a girl.
Incredible video of Ganges ghat and river rituals, it has a great importance in Hindu religion something similar to someone visiting Jerusalem or Mecca. The evening Ganga Aarti (fire ritual) by the river side is most spiritual thing to witness for most of the Indians. Thank you for taking an incredible video of those moments, especially for me to witness from outside of India that too via you're blog had doubled the joy.
I'm sorry for your health and the time you had to go through. India is not an easy place to travel through even for the locals only because you experience so many things in just a short amount of time that sometimes your body cannot keep it up. Also, one of the reason getting sick would be because you had experienced Delhi's busy streets, food, pretty crazy holi, Taj Mahal visit and travelling to varanasi. That's a lot of things in a short amount of time. Glad you're good to go again.
Not going to repeat what everyone said about Holi. Yeah, when played with people you know Holi will be a great festival to experience in your life. India has many more sane festivals all around the year and if you get a chance, try to experience those festivals as well. Each festival has a great significance and an awesome story behind it. If you got a time, may be do some Wiki search and you would be able to understand some meaning in all the craziness and chaos.
India - if seen from a distance, its a chaos. if experienced with open heart, it's a music. Experience India if you can, once in your life.
You always had a very clear and honest vlogs. Keep it up! Stay safe always.
How wonderful of the people you met to warn you about going out and insisting on keeping Kara safe! So glad they looked out for you guys!
Thank you for having health insurance!! This is a very responsible message to send to viewers. Without health insurance you could potentially bankrupt your entire family. People do not understand the enormity of not having the health insurance.
Kara, nice skirt! You look so global chic.
Wonderful video guys, great choice of music. You are so courageous for travelling off the beaten path. Thanks for your honesty. I didn't see is at complaint. Just facts from your experiences.
I am very pleased you are telling us about the not-perfect side and how it gets to you. That is as important part of travel as the sights, sounds, smells, people, and places. Travel is all the small things, the reactions of other... doesn't matter if you showed similar before it is still part of the experience you are sharing with us.
I love the way you guys are so positive and honest sharing your experiences. Safe travel !!
I cannot appreciate your honesty and advice enough. You guys are raw and authentic UA-camrs. Many people watch you for your honesty and realness don’t ever forget that :)
I have spent a good whole month binge watching yall from the beginning up to now! Love you guys!! Stay blessed! Praying for yall!
Best is to buy colours and get a group of friends, maybe a group of foreigners staying in your hotel and play privately. Or search for events which have a ticket price to enter, so then it's like a family event. It will be nothing as compared to what you experienced but safer. I live in Mumbai and still, we all including all my friends and family don't venture out in morning. It's safer than small towns but you don't know what to expect on this day. Even if people go out, we locals just don't roam on streets playing Holi with strangers. I was in Agra once and our driver refused to drive to Bharatpur stating one car's glass got broken. Roaming in Agra on Holi was fine though. I really love your positive attitude to everything and painting the right picture.
Really sad to hear about two days, but in way its good, your body is rested and stronger....yes you are right about Holi should be celebrated with known family, friends and only close ones.... people go nuts and they are high on weed, so have no idea how beastly they are behaving...please please dont go to streets, even if its major cities... they're many groups eho celebrate holi in a safe manner. But i feeling sad that you had such bad time, here....but that's the best thing about life and travel, everything changes at next station
As a seasoned traveler, I love and appreciate your honesty and forwardness about the challenges of travel! All of my family and friends think it's so elegant and perfect, but anyone who's travel an extensive amount knows thats literally not possible!
I feel you Kara!!! While I wasn't there during Holi, I was SO sick (from what I assume was my previous destination in India) while in Varanasi and pushed through for the first day but was bed ridden for the rest. Not sure if my friends and family just told me this to make me feel better, but they said the smells in that city over the other 7 cities we traveled to in India, were the most challenging in Varanasi--which wouldn't have helped my sickness!
Always celebrate holy with a family that includes everyone like parents grandparents and children.....that's the safest way to celebrate holi
So many are just glad our two favorite travelers are ok. Please continue on the mend, and most importantly, be safe out there!
Oh Kara you poor thing. I am one of those unlucky travellers that gets "Bali belly' in every bloody corner of the world i travel too! haha. Chin up my love, you put on an awesome brave face x
Varanasi is the most baffling city. As a foreigner it is very hard to understand what comes through the sense doors. Overload in a country that specialises in overload. It’s unique and you never get it out of your skin. This is a quality India video, honest and endearing. Nate with the Benares bug, that’s the full India. You’ll be good now. Bless you both.
Feel better. Stay safe. Continue your journey. ❤️
I have been going back to watch all of your videos while I am at work. I absolutely love seeing the older videos and seeing how all these other countries and cultures live day to day
in few regions its not safe to play holi where people are iliterate,
while its safe to play in urban and quietly developed areas :)
Thank you for keeping it real!! Every time I watch a video from people that travel to India I’m like “wait that’s not India, that’s totally something else than what I experienced” but seeing your videos I can finally relate! Exact same experience but despite everything, India has its charm 😍
Thanks for sharing all aspects of your adventures. That high fever would have really worried me. So glad that you both recovered well!
We have booked a trip to India in November and Varanasi is one of our destinations - so much more excited after seeing your Vlog. We aren't brave enough to do India independently so we are going with a small group.
I have picked up that you are a couple with a strong faith. I really believe that you were being protected while you were convalescing in your hotel. That was a pretty powerful reminder!
Carol Jeffs racist spotted. Western media brainwashed. Always negative about India.
Get rid of negative
Hey Carol, welcome to India mate!!
We would love to host you, as a vibrant and colourful country. Don’t get too worried, just the usual avoidance in any common tourist spot, just like the spam sentences above my comment (c’est la vie)
Have an open mind and I’m sure we, as a country, are gonna give you the best vacation. Feel free to ask if I can be of any help. Mind you, average Indian doesn’t (in some cases cannot) go to all the places of the country. So if you travel to places where I’m familiar with, always there for you mate!!
Happy travel and viva la vida...
Swapnadeep Banerjee thanks for your feedback! Our tour will be covering Delhi, Jaipur, Agra and Varanasi. Once the your is over we have about a week or so before we head to Singapore. I'm trying to decide if we will head south to Goa and Kerala area. Any thoughts or recommendations? I have many friends from the Punjab région so that direction is also a possibility. Still lots of time before we have to nail down the itinerary. Cheers!
mayank kumar hahahahaha! Yup you called it! Lol
Carol, dividing the answer in two parts. If you go to Punjab, then you’ll be in the northern part of the country only. But then if you have a friend there, then it is an awesome idea. Punjabis (residents of Punjab) are known to be great hosts and even greater friends. Rest assured you’ll have the nicest time there and yeah a lot lot and lots of Punjabi food, which is yum, but don’t count calories 😃.
In this comment, I'd try my best to explain about the best destinations during Holi! First of all, It's good to see that you guys are honest to your experiences in your vlog. Being an Indian I really love to see a foreigner's aspect towards India.
1. I would suggest that Holi, which is a festival of colors is indeed quite exciting but a traveller should take care about the planned destination! In early days, colors used in this festival were natural and were made from beautiful flowers but as time passed, use of synthetic colors have increased which has side effects like skin rash etc.Although awareness for use of organic and eco-friendly colors is spreading rigorously nowadays, in India, but you should always plan a better destination and should not just join any street crowd if you are very much concerned about color qualities. Otherwise, its also a good and maybe original way to celebrate holi with lots of people!
2. India is very diverse in culture and even while moving from one state to other, you can clearly observe the difference in festivals, languages and culture! For example in southern India, you should never ever plan a Holi as most of them do not celebrate it!
4. Moreover, the place you chose i.e. Varanasi is something, you will enjoy being there during Diwali( the festival of lights). Varanasi is quite populated and certainly over-crowded as per landscape, and holi is best celebrated in a group with lots of people, which may not be a better idea here in the congested lanes of Varanasi .
-------------------------------------- FOLLOWING ARE THE BEST PLACES TO CELEBRATE HOLI---------------------------------------------------
5. Holi is of particular significance in the Braj region, which includes locations traditionally associated with the Lord Krishna: Mathura, Vrindavan, Nandgaon and Barsana, which become touristic during the season of Holi. For example: Holi can be celebrated amazingly in many of temples in India like Banke Bihari Temple, Vrindavan . Moreover, many hotels do plan holi parties where you can pay and celebrate. Although my choice would be going to temples which will give an ethnic touch to the fest and on the other hand will be safe and sound !
6. Other options could be visiting the state of Rajasthan( cities like Jaipur,Udaipur etc), where you can experience a royal and ethnic way to celebrate the colors. You could also simply go to Mumbai or western India(like Gujrat) , where you can join various small parties or clubs or even pool side parties organised by various Hotels and see a mixed Indo-western way to holi celebrations!
For any clarification, please leave a comment! Thanks for reading.
First of all, I am so sorry you fell sick in India. Secondly, you're way too brave to go to Varanasi for holi, or even to Vrindavan. Men are drunk and uncontrollable those couple of days. We always play holi at home or in small neighborhood communities. Also, it is pronounced Gan- gah which is the native name for the River Ganges. They were praying to the holy river. Gan-ja is weed :P Oh and in 90% of India, Hindus use electric cremation, not wood. Again, holi is fantastic, but man, you guys are brave! Holi in places like Vrindavan and Varanasi(out in public) is dangerous and most Indians don't go there. Love from the States!
What a professional editing, really great. Holi is full of craziness, not advisable to be celebrated with strangers. You guys have put it very honestly.
You still got that ring from Lithuania in this trip! :)
Oh wow, I just commented on one of your previous Holi vlogs, and now I'm getting chills and teary eyes. Thank you for saying this at the end, I really really hoped you would. The exact same thing happened to me in Delhi - I was pulled away from my boyfriend at the time and encircled by a group of maybe 10 drunk guys. It was bad. Again, I'm really glad you brought it up, and again, I hope in the future things like this will stop and India will be a safer, yet still super colourful and incredible place.
The sunrise visuals were totally incredible! Also I cannot get over the cows wandering everywhere!
Wasn't the sunrise incredible?! I know the cows cracked me up!
Cameron Phillips so you saw how calm and peaceful animal they are. Killing & torturing of these animals in the west really saddens me.
Cameron Phillips we love our cows lol 😂
Beef is Banned in India , Cow declared as a holy animal , Slaughtering of Cow is illegal. Cow population is increasing AF , no measure taken against em.
Gaurav Singh in kerala we eat Cows. They taste so good. Delicious. Hinduism might be the oldest religion but the most retarded one behind islam. Bye 😘😘
I can totally appreciate this video. Its so important to get a well rounded understanding of the reality of traveling. Without this video I would have kept thinking Holi was ONLY what I saw in videos- a fun, safe, colorful festival. But there are 2 sides to every coin. Thank you for your honesty.
very glad you feel better!!!
Wow! Another superlative and wonderfully filmed, video. So sorry you were both ill, but, as you say, it was a blessing in disguise. You know, in the future, I see you having a "tour" business, you are both so savvy and getting a lot of "smarts" from your experiences! Your videos have always been good, but, lately, they are amazingly good!
In small towns Girls, women dont go out During Holi, they celebrate in their House rooftop or balcony with family. While in Big cities like Mumbai, bangalore, delhi ,they have these Private parties organised in resorts or hotels which are totally Safe for girls and usually young educated people attend it,so they are safe. It's just how it is right now in INDIA. I mean we are trying to change things, but I think it will only change with Time ,when mothers will start to teach their SONS to respect women In place of Teaching girls to stay indoors. Its the sad reality of small towns in INDIA..😥
nikky S why can’t fathers also teach their sons to respect women?
Because the fathers are the ones treating women like objects.
I celebrated Holi in Jaipur a few years ago. The owners of my hotel said the same thing to myself and another young woman I was traveling with. The owner did help us get a taxi to a party hosted by the tourism board so we were able to have a great time while being safe.
Poor you to feel that sick! But it looks like it was actually a real "blessing" to stay in.. I'm glad you're ok guys and hope you're feeling 100% fine now. Love your videos!
You cannot go to India without getting ill ... it's the price you pay. A great place to visit, been there in the 70's and travelled extensively , had a great time but spent many a day curled up holding my stomach wishing I was anywhere else .... remember the golden rule , even when its bad travel is always good. I love your stuff , keep it up and thank you.
I hope you stay healthy and enjoy your travel
Hey, guys. I recently stumbled upon this video and I usually don't comment on UA-cam videos but I just feel compelled to. I am an Indian, living in London but I do have friends all across the globe who have visited India for obvious reasons. But Varanasi, man you guys were so BRAVE. I have a French friend who did briefly serve as an undertaker and he did enjoy Varanasi, especially having to witness the Ghats and whole dark vibe around it. But that's simply cause he is used to that kind of stuff. As an Indian myself I would NEVER dare to go there. It's evident that tourists attract unwanted attention in India (which I sometime find frustrating). But it goes without saying that you guys have so much respect from me. It's unbelievable how you conducted yourself with a constant smile on your faces. I felt terrible watching you being stuck in the stampede in the previous vlogs and I legit felt like extending my hand and just grabbing you guys out. I personally hate Holi, it can get nasty at times unless you're in a closed setting (which is the most ideal thing to do). It's always better to get a private party invite in Delhi or Mumbai. Nevertheless, you guys were CHAMPS. I think I am in falling in love with you guys with every vlog I see. I hope you don't hold bitter memories of this trip and would want to come back and explore parts which you missed out on, in a more safer/cleaner surrounding. I hope you return back to Delhi or Mumbai and see it differently. In short, HUGE RESPECT! You guys are lovely people. Keep at it.
Kara missed the Ghats in Nepal I'm glad she got to see them in India
Me too!
Nina Tenas hi! Can u pls tell which ghat to see there in Nepal ☺
"Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind." -Anthony Bourdain
Hey Kara and Nate,
I have been watching your videos since yesterday and was thrilled when I saw that you're visiting my city. That thrill ended soon though.
Living Advice: It might sound tempting to live nearby Ghats but it's really not. There are so many places that would cost you less and still be better to live and to explore the city.
Travel Advice: This place has its own rules. We see a lot of different people from different people so you'll always need some local guy to help you out. NOT A TOUR GUIDE. People are going to be super helpful if you just ask them.
HOLI: It all depends upon the kind of locality you are in to celebrate it. The city has it's good and bad part like any other. As you have mentioned, private parties are always an option but I feel like if you know someone from nearby you'll have the time of your life celebrating Holi here.
Send me an email or a hangout if you guys would want to visit again so that I can remodel the image of Varanasi for you guys and your friends.
PS: I'm not a tour guide :P
@0:20 Three cow stampede. ;-) PS Thanks for 'keeping it real'. We all get sick sometimes. It is important to know what to do and where to go for help when we're away from home. BE WELL!
