This is a great video for beginners and intermediate level students. What Jason Heath said here is nearly verbatim what I tell all beginners and new students who come to me. Sports analogies almost always seem to help.

okay , i'm 65 relearning how to play kontrabass after about 15 years of break from music .I don't have the same amount of time as young bucks for a full course of study before I go out and try my chops at jazz clubs .Here is idea to double the efficiency of learning taking seriously the tip about "bowing in the liquid "and throwing frisbee :
How about purchasing a bass made of carbon fibers so it will last a bit longer underwater and renting diving gear ...i'm not worried about the frisbee because it is usually made out of plastic so longer direct contact with water hopefully won't do much damage to it .Shortly speaking one can take frisbee and the bass into the swimming pool and significantly save time between switching from one exercise to another .....hmmm... another thought comes to my head while i'm riding about this practical invention ...usually one good idea leads to another one and another ...like a chain !!! ......How about opening, manufacturing and producing plastic waterproof bases ??......just in case ..i wasn't drinking nor smoking anything ...
i'm natural inventor which i can prove ...here we go stanislawcollection.com

Have never bowed my upright bass but I want to learn it. I have, however, played a lot of disc golf and this makes a lot of sense. I suspect Jason Heath has been flinging discs as well, it certainly sounds like he's speaking from experience.

Can you make a video were you discuss more in deep how to bowl from tip to frog? I´m really struggle with it on the E string and in general I don´t feel I really putting the "weight" when I start playing on the tip

We do plan on covering lots more topics on French bow and will try to address this in a future video. I also wondered if this lesson of ours might be helpful in the meantime discoverdoublebass.com/lesson/beginners-bowing-lesson-the-arm-angle

If you don't have one already, could you do a video on the German bow?
I've been playing for a little under a year on the German bow, and I still have a tough time getting a nice clear sound on the lower A and E strings, without it sliding and grinding.
Also, playing up high in 5th position gets difficult to produce a clear sound without it squeaking and playing a harmonic.
And yes, it is REALLY difficult to have a straight bow without use of a mirror for a while because of the way you look at it.
    Very informational and thankyou!

We have a German bow course by David Allen Moore, but there are also several German bow specific lessons in the Bowing Technique category of our free lessons library which I think will answer your question about the E and A strings discoverdoublebass.com/double-bass-bowing-technqiue-lessons Best of luck with all your practice. :-)

I think the biggest problem I have with bowing is muting. I've lost the ability to mute with my right hand, and my left hand can't seem to cover the E string when I'm playing higher notes. Any tips?

Hi Jason, I have a bit of difficulty with Spirocore Weich bow sound. I had the impression that Spiro Weich are totally ok for bowing
    e.g. Max Dimoff here: ua-cam.com/video/I5QdFpzWiWo/v-deo.html
I tried two different bow with 4 different strings in last few months but my bass went through some maintenance that perhaps impacted the variables so I can't really draw any particular conclusion because of too many variables. I thought I check if you can comment on bow hair kind, hair tension, impact of rosin (my rosin was a used one from previous bass owner and I don't know if it is too dried up here in my extra dry environment). If I'm gonna change the bow hair (assuming that could be the factor) what tips I should look for. Also I use German style and not sure if there is a difference in getting a good sound from French vs. German and I don't know which one is easier for a novice player. I appreciate your input. Does the sound change with string aging? My Spirocore strings are new and the previous strings (Sensicore) were at early age (only a few weeks with not frequent playing) so I'm wondering if with age and as rosin builds up on the strings, the tone gets better. Please comment. Thanks a lot.

Hi, Jason isn’t available on our channel to answer questions directly, but we can offer some advice. New spiros are very bright and it will take several weeks of regular playing for them to loose that initial harsh brightness. However, they are a superb string for hybrid playing. Check out both Jason and Joseph Conyers using Spiro Weich on our channel. They are a superb string for jazz too and as a hybrid string they not as easy to get started as a pure Orchestra string like Belcanto. However, they are used by loads of orchestra and jazz bassists with the bow. With careful practice you will get there. Check out the Boeing section in our free lessons library and if possible get an in person lesson as that would answer lots of your questions and give you the best possible start with the bow. Best of luck with your practice. 🙏🏻🎶
