An excellent performance by Maestro Blomstedt and the orchestra. Whatever number is assigned to Schubert's Great C Major, it ranks with the greatest symphonies ever written.

This symphony has also appeared as No. 7 instead of No. 9. The reason? There is a 7th symphony in E major D729 which is structurally complete but Schubert orchestrated only the slow introduction and the first 110 bars of the first movement proper. It appears then that D729 to some does not count as a truly complete work.
No. It shouldn't. Schubert wrote only eight symphonies. What used to be No.7 was dropped from the catalog because it wasn't orchestrated by him. Best wishes from Vermont 🍁🧡🍁
@@NDRKlassik bloody awesome indeed! This was the first "large" symphony in which I played the timpany as a replacement with a amateur orchestra. My lord, was I happy i had once learned to count over 100 and for the "stichnoten". :-)

One of the symphonies has been removed from the list. What used to be No.7 was dropped from the list because the manuscript is a draft score with only its introduction and 110 bars scored by Schubert. Several other people subsequently turned the remaining un-orchestrated manuscript. Schubert didn't write what was called Symphony No.7, so it was removed - decades ago - from the accepted canon. It's that simple. Some people are just getting the news, however - and resisting it.

No. It shouldn't. Schubert wrote only eight symphonies.
What used to be No.7 was dropped from the catalog because it wasn't orchestrated by him.
Best wishes from Vermont 🍁🧡🍁
@@TheStockwell thanks
Suprisingly timpanist doesn´t have the score! :O He´s playing by memory
Yes. He nearly always does. Awesome, isn't it?? It's Stephan Cürlis, our Solo timpanist.
@@NDRKlassik bloody awesome indeed! This was the first "large" symphony in which I played the timpany as a replacement with a amateur orchestra.
My lord, was I happy i had once learned to count over 100 and for the "stichnoten". :-)
:)))
No, it is Symphony No. 9.
It is indeed the 8th - at least in the numbering system Herbert Blomstedt believes in! :) You may want to listen to him here - with english subtitles :) -> ua-cam.com/video/kiZb3wzf6Wo/v-deo.html
There are simply different ways of numbering out in the world - some including his 7th, some who don't, because he wrote so little of it himself.
@@NDRKlassik I see. Thanks for the enlightening information.
Alter Schwede!

Hello. This mislabeled information is Symphony No. 9 in C major, D 944, (The Great) and not Symphony No. 8 in C major, D 944. But Bravo, very good interpretation. Greetings from Chile.
Thank you for the compliment and greetings from Hamburg! About the labeling: It's a different numbering system for Schubert's symphonies. And Herbert Blomstedt insists that it is the 8th. :) ua-cam.com/video/kiZb3wzf6Wo/v-deo.html.
Wait a sec. Isn't Schubert's NINTH symphony called 'The great"? Which is which?
There are different numbering systems. It has already been discussed here in the comments. According to the current Schubert research his "Great C Major" is named as "No. 8". And Herbert Blomstedt insists that it is the 8th - you might want to listen to his very charming introduction here: ua-cam.com/video/kiZb3wzf6Wo/v-deo.html 🤩
*Not symphony no.8 in C major, it is Symphony no.9 in C Major
It's a different, competing numbering system for Schubert's symphonies.
Yes, indeed! And Herbert Blomstedt insists that it is the 8th. :) ua-cam.com/video/kiZb3wzf6Wo/v-deo.html
@@NDRKlassik oh i did not know that!
We all learn from Maestro Blomstedt! ;)
