As much as I like this game, I do agree with most of your points. It feels more like a prototype for an idea than a fleshed out idea. But I do really like the coin mechanic and simplistic track design. That's something I guess. But the series didn't become great until Mario Kart DS, in my honest opinion.
Limitations and challenges abounded. It was limitations that led them to this stroke of genius. They also found that they art-style being settled into that frame, suited the wide view, in the 2 player angle. With less the a year to develop, they didn't endeavor to get around it. They would have been able to with enough time. I've always thought they should have gone all out, for a big cartridge, true sequel to SMK, but alas, this is what we have. The tracks are tight, and don't extend far, unlike F-Zero.
Hey Jacob! I've been watching since Nintendo project, stopped when you left digicades and now thank God I found this chanmel. your videos are the most enjoyable thing on UA-cam., I'm not even a Nintendo fan and I watch and love all of your videos, I don't know how you do it. everyone complains about the drifting when it just takes skill. if you learn how to properly drift it becomes one of the game's best attributes. I'm serious, it's insanely satisfying.
It's kind of sad when you have to collab with a much more popular UA-camr in order for these videos to get the views they really deserve. I'm not crapping on Nathan by any means, but when this is already the most popular indiejacob video simply because Nathan is in it, that's frustrating. Your channel deserves the chance to grow on its own and I worry that the people who subscribed because of this video are not gonna stick around because not all videos feature Nathan.
I feel like the only one who thinks that coins in Mario Kart are mostly a good thing. They add balance since the person in front doesn't get too many items for shielding, and having a lot of coins is good because it speeds you up. Plus, they unlock things in later games. Sure, it's annoying to get coins when you want something else, but it's worth it for game balance. That said, I've never played Super Mario Kart, so maybe it's worse in that game.
I used to hate the steering too... then I went back to "Mario Kart 8" and got demolished by red shells, blue shells, and so much other crap, and then I started to appreciate Super Mario Kart's more skill-based design.
I’m here for the memes The problem is that it doesn't need to have a split screen while you're playing alone. It should only exist during two player mode.
For me, i didn't have that much trouble with the drifting. The feather can useless is some areas but is more of a lifesaver for tracks like Ghost Valley, Bowser Castle and Rainbow Road (dodging a area full of items or avoiding falling off). If you want a really hard challenge try pressing Y then A in the character select screen to race the GP in Small Mode, you'll be crushed easily by touching any opponent but your speed won't be affected.
I actually thought Mario Kart 64 was worse. Now that game has really not aged well. The graphics are blurry, there's less characters than in super Mario kart, the stages really aren't that fun to race in. Honestly there are much better Mario kart games out there such as double dash, 7, 8, Wii, and DS. Idk why everyone calls it the best in the series tbh. Diddy Kong Racing is an infinitely much better game than Mario Kart 64.
Gaming Animator because if it’s n64 it incredible but I know this is not related but super Mario 64 is waaaay worse then Mario kart 64 (I think super Mario 3D land is better then both games)
Same I only played a little and we did wario stadium and I used the ultimate strat, Aka the hop over the small wall by the finish line and I was done 5 mins before the other person I was playing with. So it’s buggy, I mostly dominate at mario kart 8 just so you know and so I would think this game handles like ass. All in all it sucks.
there's 8 characters, the same as in the original, special items are gone and all items can be used by everyone, courses were longer and had height changes, there were more items, some of which became staples such as the golden mushroom and the blue shell and it helped the mario kart series become what it is today! the rubber banding is *MUCH* worse tho...
I think this is one of the hardest games. Period. I came soooo close to passing 100cc special cup but the ai cheats so much, and rainbow road doesn't let you go fast
I mean it's not really hard to see why splitscreen happened.. they wanted you to be able to race your friends, and the singleplayer version of that would need its own entire set of graphics if it took up more space.
Having a split screen view in single player had to do with something with coding in the two player splitscreen. Don't take my word for it though I may be wrong.
Guy 1:What’s your one of ur talents, mine is to balance a book on my head Guy 2: Cool, mine is waking with my legs Guy 3: HEY GUYS I CAN DRIFT WITH EASE IN SUPER MARIO KART Guy 1 and 2: GOD DAM!!!
A pet peeve of mine is when people complain about how hard it is to catch up in this game, but when they introduced an item that’s meant to help you catch up easier (Blue Shell), everyone hates it. :/ Also, I like the Coin, lol. It is helpful, because if you have no coins in SMK, you spin out if someone bumps into you.
I do not remember why I had this game.. Probably the last time that happened, all my other SNES games I remember exactly why I wanted them and whether I got them directly from asking for them or what..
this is just me speculating based on the comparison of the sprites between F ZERO and Super Mario kart; it is an issue with the perspective the sprites are drawn in. thats why it like that. the sprites in SMK are drawn from behind the back almost level with the road while the sprites in F ZERO are drawn as if the camera is above and behind looking at a slightly lowered angle.
I feel like the game was designed to be played with 2 players, hence why half of the screen is just the map and the rearview mirror (that doesn't excuse the fact there is no option to turn it off in single player, but personally it didn't bother me since I only played this game with a friend)
I actually drift a lot in this game, but you have to understand the underlying mechanics of how drifting works and that’s not apparent to most players.
After seeing this and Nathaniel Bandy's triggered video, I'm now SURPRISED the Mario Kart franchise managed to come this far when it's first instalment was a MESS!

I agree with the controls, F-Zero, that game controlled so tight and accurately, I'm surprised SMK Didn't control as tightly, I mean I think they did it to create "Drift physics" though Fzero controlled just so much better overall. That's the only gripe I have for SMK. Everything else would just be nit picking. haha some of my favorite music in the entire Mario Kart franchise is from this one. I failed so hard at this as a kid, the controls were the only thing that kept me from really succeeding back in the day, now MK64 fixed that and controlled well, controls were never an issue since.

i feel like the developers for super mario kart has never really played a mario game before. mushroom for boost? i thought it made mario super (bigger) when did star make you go faster? or was it because players got the illusion of fast because you could run through things without taking hit.
I love super Mario kart, even though I’m ahead of it’s time, the SNES was a console I grew up playing with and have been playing it for quite some time now, therefore I have some tips. The Side Quest Gamer Review Show I’d say the series got great at Super Circut.
I've played a little bit of it and liked it. Felt like a more polished Super Mario Kart
The Side Quest Gamer Review Show I think 64 was the first good Mario Kart
Hi sidequest
Well, someone clearly hasn't played Double Dash.
Mario Kart 64 was a HUGE improvement across the board to the Mario Kart formula
No. It wasn't.
For people wondering, the screen has to split in two because of the 2 player mode, they weren't able to code the in split the screen to turn into one
Limitations and challenges abounded. It was limitations that led them to this stroke of genius.

I played this on Switch Online. Came to the conclusion it’s impossible without the Online’s reverse feature.
Don't you hate it when your last words are Frogger for the SNES?

The only problem I have about this game is the drifting.

What about the CPU's?

It was originally supposed to be an only 2 player game
The reason the half screen exists is because this was made to be a two player game. If you wanted a one player one, go play F-Zero
I’m here for the memes The problem is that it doesn't need to have a split screen while you're playing alone. It should only exist during two player mode.
That's not an excuse lol, there should've been option to play without that huge map
I would still be willing to wait for that, even if it was delayed for over a year.
@@budworks pretty sure thats out of the snes's hardware capabilitied which explains the split screen map

Super Mario Kart definitely suffers from “first-game-in-the-series” syndrome.
You drift like a tractor-trailer semi-truck in the middle of a jack-knife hazard.
I mean it's not really hard to see why splitscreen happened.. they wanted you to be able to race your friends, and the singleplayer version of that would need its own entire set of graphics if it took up more space.

Mario kart was supposed to be a F-zero
Why are you so underrated
The thing that scares me most is that people still say this game is so much better than Super Circuit :^(
If I was to say 1 thing in defense the two screens in single player were basically required otherwise multiplayer would not have been possible.
I agree with the controls, F-Zero, that game controlled so tight and accurately, I'm surprised SMK Didn't control as tightly, I mean I think they did it to create "Drift physics" though Fzero controlled just so much better overall. I love super Mario kart, even though I’m ahead of it’s time, the SNES was a console I grew up playing with and have been playing it for quite some time now, therefore I have some tips. For starters: The lightweight characters (koopa troopa & toad) are easier to use on most levels except for the choco island levels, vanilla lake levels and the donut plain levels. The medium weight characters (peach, Mario, Luigi & Yoshi) are the happy medium and are okay on most of the levels including the donut plain levels, vanilla lake levels and the choco island levels. The heavyweight characters (bowser & DK Jr) are harder to use on most of the tracks except for donut plains, vanilla lake & choco island. But respectively heavyweight players are faster than the med. weight players which are faster than the lightweight players so it’s a trade off. It’s easier to start off with lightweight characters and work your way up to the heavyweight characters.
I usually don't play heavy characters on ANY kart game (Crash Team Racing, Speed Punks, Diddy Kong Racing etc) because turning is too important to me.
Not sure if Trailor Park Boys reference, or actual name
Feather can be used to skip over 80% in many stages
I can beat 150cc with everyone except bowser and I only need to drift on a few tracks. Also regarding smacking the number 2 racer down you gotta hit him towards the end of the final lap
